Potlatch Fund Fiscally Sponsors Native Organization Working Towards Obtaining their 501(c)(3) Status As part of our mission to inspire and build upon the Native tradition

5 As part of our mission to inspire and build upon the Native tradition of giving and to expand philanthropy within Tribal Nations and Native communities in the Northwest, Potlatch Fund provides fiscal sponsorship to 15 emerging Native nonprofits throughout our service area. With our support, these groups are working towards their goal of becoming strong sustainable 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organizations. Starting with the John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole Project, we will be spotlighting the work of our fiscally sponsored groups over the coming year. Rick Williams standing next to the raised totem pole. (c) Jack Storms ( gallery) Video from Sunday's Event Story as covered Indian Country Today The raising of the John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole this past weekend by the John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole Project is a powerful example of both what community restorative justice can look like AND what an emerging nonprofit can do within a year with a very committed & passionate board. The JTW Project has been working to raise funds to erect a totem pole in a public space in Seattle, carved by the Williams family, to honor the memory of their brother, John T. Williams. Williams, who was a First Nations (Ditidaht) master carver, was shot and killed by an officer of the Seattle Police Department on August 30, Following huge public outcry over the senselessness of his death and a legal review that found the shooting unjustified, John s brother Rick Williams began carving a 34-foot totem both as a tribute to his brother and to begin the healing process. Sunday s traditional totem pole raising ceremony brought together more than 1,500 community members, Native leaders and cultural bearers from both the United States and Canada, members of the Seattle Police Department, and local politicians. The totem pole was erected at the Seattle Center, on the lawn adjacent to the EMP and the Space Needle. Future plans include the development of a plaza, which will be paved with stone tiles bearing the names of donors. <LEARN MORE> Developing a Communication Plan Pyramid Communications will co-host this one day training designed specifically for Tribes and Native nonprofits. Over the weekend of March 10 and 11, the Potlatch Fund Board of Directors held their annual retreat at the Emerald Queen Hotel in Fife, Washington. The two day retreat was facilitated by Jessica Porter, Chinook, who was a member of the 2009 LEAD cohort. The retreat provided a space for current Board Members to reflect on the growth and development of Potlatch Fund over the past ten years as well as brainstorm about the future and map out some goals. Potlatch Fund staff joined the Board for the second day of the retreat. Staff and Board Members worked on a number of activities together and participants came away from the retreat feeling both refreshed and energized. Send your answer to Potlatch Fund, and look for it in a future enewsletter! The retreat was successful in providing a positive and constructive space for the Staff and Board to come together and discuss the Potlatch Fund's goals and strategize about how to best achieve those goals while staying true to our mission, which is to: inspire and build upon the Native tradition of giving and expand philanthropy within Tribal Nations and Native communities in the Northwest. As an organization that provides capacity building trainings to Tribes and Native nonprofits, the retreat allowed Potlatch Fund to actively experience, firsthand, the work we undertake on a regular basis throughout our service area of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana Calendar of Events Strengthening the Circle Conference Bozeman MT April 3-6, 2012 <information - Hopa Mountain> NICWA Conference Scottsdale AZ April 22-24, 2012 <information> Native Philanthropy Institute Los Angeles CA April 25-27, 2012 <information>

Erin Genia Thank you Potlatch Fund for the tremendous work you do in the tribal communities. Michael Vendiola 10 Days of Giving Challenge While I know that giving has always been central to Native values and traditions, I am still in awe of the generous support shown to Potlatch Fund during the 10 days of the Cultures of Giving Donor Challenge. Your generosity not only allowed us to secure funds, totaling more than $56,000, that will go towards strengthening Native and Tribal communities in the Northwest through our grantmaking and capacity building trainings, but also helped us to raise the visibility of our work to a national level. Thank you for sharing Potlatch Fund's work with your friends, family, and colleagues! This challenge, set forth by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, was initially very daunting for us. This was our first online fundraising campaign and we were not sure how our donor base would respond. Along with the other Native organizations selected to participate - Hopi Foundation, Tiwahe Foundation, and First Nations Development Institute - we wondered whether technology would be a barrier to getting our message out. However, we soon saw this as an opportunity to work together to strategize and support one another through the challenge. Congratulations to our partner organizations for your successes and we look forward to future collaborations. Finally, I want to thank my staff and board for their hard work and support along this journey. We learned a lot through this experience and look forward to celebrating all that we have gained in the past two weeks. In closing, thank you all for helping to kick-off our 10th anniversary with 10 days if giving. We raise our hands to you!

I was quickly taken into the community, gifted wisdom and knowledge, learned cultural traditions and participated in ceremonies that most folks will never get to experience in their lifetime. I have met amazing people who are dedicated to creating community for their Elders, Youth and fellow Tribal members. Philanthropic colleges have shared their perspectives and allowed me to also share my cultural perspective on their work. I have learned more than I could have ever imagined and so it is with bittersweet feelings that I announce my departure. Elevator Speeches with Heather Miller Fundraising Training with Heather Miller I however, am not resigning from the world of philanthropy! In a surprising turn of events, I have accepted a new position and am moving back to the Plains, back to the mountains and back to the land of sunshine to join the capacity building team at First Nations Development Institute. Transitions, from my perspective have never been an end to relationships and as I move through Indian Country I know that this is not goodbye! I will be back to our wonderful rain, freezing temps and beautiful cultural traditions as my work only expands across Indian Country. Thank you all for welcoming, teaching, sharing, befriending and supporting me while calling my Seattle street address home. I look forward to this new adventure! Participation at our Gala is critical to help us meet the needs of Northwest Indian Country. The Potlatch Fund Gala is true to its roots: money raised will be reinvested in Tribal communities and Native initiatives through our Re-granting Program and Capacity Building Trainings.

29 July 26, Paddle to Squaxin Since 2005, Potlatch Fund has awarded grants to Tribes and Canoe Families participating in the annual InterTribal Canoe Journey. The annual "Journey" revives the centuries-old tradition of transport, trade and gatherings among nations by the Coastal Tribes of the Northwest marks 23 years of the modern "Journey" which was revitalized by Emmett Oliver, a Quinault Tribal Elder, who helped organize the "Paddle to Seattle" to celebrate Washington State's centennial in Native youth are the focus of the "Journey" which teaches participants traditional knowledge around family, environment and culture. Twenty-eight groups received grants for the 2012 Paddle to Squaxin Island, helping with ground support, food, safety equipment and other costs. Funding was provided by: 2012 Awardee List Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Kalliopeia Foundation OneFamily Foundation Eulalie Bloedel Schneider Foundation Jeffris Wood Foundation contributions from the 2011 Potlatch Fund Gala The Potlatch Fund Board and Staff raise their hands to all of those who have supported the InterTribal Canoe Journey! Pah-Tu Pitt: Canoe Journey Reflection This year I had the opportunity to expand my pulling experience by canoeing with the Quinault Canoe Society. Pulling on the ocean felt good especially as the Coastal Canoes stuck together and the

30 Some of Quinault s Haynisisoos (HanaShú) Canoe pullers at Suquamis Canoes at Port Gamble S'Klallam support boats hung close by. The seabirds seemed a bit surprised to see us, but quickly returned to their business. I felt like this experience was a natural progression in expanding my repertoire as a puller and remained consistently impressed observing how well the Coastal Tribes support each other. Many aspects of the canoe journey, I hold tight, such as becoming closer to my ancestors from along Wemulth (the Columbia River), connecting with distant neighbors, wildlife, waterways and landscapes. Observing so many people investing in themselves and their communities uplifts my spirit and allows me to continue to grow as a person. My desire is that my experience is one drop in the vast pool of strength and education existing within our communities and that I allow journey to keep working within me year round. One of my elders reminds me that "people and industry will come and go, but Indians have always been here since time immemorial and always will be therefore we make decisions based upon staying true to future generations" and sometimes you have to dig deep as the ancestors did before us to continue supporting our way of life. Dana Arviso: Canoe Journey Reflection Dana receives a custom handmade paddle from Joe Seymour (Squaxin Island Artist) Uncle Smitty & Aunt Lutie Hillaire sing a song to send off the Lummi canoes in prayer This is my first Tribal Journeysand I have been really lucky to travel on the Ohileqw-Lani (Happy Lady) Canoe from Lummi under the guidance of "Uncle" Smitty Hillaire. I am pulling with the Lummi CEDAR Project, a Potlatch Fund grantee who works with Native youth by teaching them the lessons of canoe culture. Lummi CEDAR Project is headed by Shasta Cano-Martin & Misty Kopplin, both Potlatch Fund LEAD Program alumni. We are also traveling with the Cedar Rose Canoe which was made by Lummi Councilman Levi Jefferson with pullers from the Autumn Rose Canoe Club. It is hard to summarize what my first Tribal Journeys experience has been like because I have learned a lot in just the first week and still have three more days left until the final landing. One of the lessons I have learned is a saying I have heard in nearly every stop of the way, You don t know what you don t know until you know it. This applies not only to the physical activity of pulling canoe together as a team and as family but to the sense of humility you experience from your surroundings and from the guidance and wisdom shared by Elders and Tribal communities around you. But here is a glimpse into the travel diary that I have been keeping along the way [MORE] Funder Tours: Final Landing and Potlatch Protocol Since 2005, Potlatch Fund has scheduled tours around the final landing of the InterTribal Canoe Journey. 32 A Tribute to John Chess Founding Board Member of Potlatch Fund It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of John Chess. John, a founding Board Member of Potlatch Fund, passed away last week at his home in Pendleton (OR), at the age of 53. While John held a number of positions and roles at the Board level over the years, it was his balanced and methodical approach that ensured Potlatch Fund developed in a manner reflecting the intentions of those originally involved. John gave guidance and direction over key grants that provided initial funds for Potlatch Fund to flourish and, as an engaged member of the Board, he regularly traveled great distances to attend meetings and community events. John at the 2011 Gala Prior to his involvement in Potlatch Fund, John was instrumental in securing funding for the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). Through his work at the Institute, John ensured that the historical works around American Indian history was documented with viewpoints instilled from the realities and values of American Indian people. John s involvement in the Institute, where he was Director of Development, never ended. Antone Minthorn (former Chair of the CTUIR Board of Trustees and founding Potlatch Fund Board Member) said, John Chess was with us, was one of us, in those early battles to build a self-sufficient CTUIR nation and to help tribes in the Pacific Northwest. He was a good soldier and we will certainly miss him. John s presence, knowledge and gentle demeanor will be missed at Potlatch Fund, but the legacy of his service from our very beginnings will continue at Potlatch Fund and thus so will John s love of Native history, art and culture.

40 ə 2012 Leadership Honoring Awardee The Fran James Cultural Preservation Award Chief Delvis Heath, Sr. was born September 26, 1938, in Simnasho Oregon, Warm Springs, where he grew up in a Traditional family practicing the Washut religion on a daily basis. He travelled to the mountains gathering traditional foods according to season. He also excelled at ranching including domesticating wild horses and herding cattle. His dad served as Warm Springs Chief from and he has served since 1982 following the passing of Chief Simtustus. The boarding school experience was a period in his life where he did not speak the Tribal language; and after a lecture from his mother in the language, he was able to begin the healing process. Witnessing the impacts of many broken promises to the Tribal people, Chief Delvis has sought to strengthen Tribal communities in his role permanently serving on Tribal Council. In addition to his work as the traditional leader of the Warm Springs people, he is a bowler, golfer and horse rider. 42 October 23, Philanthropist of the Year Award At our Gala, Potlatch Fund honors the Native tradition of giving by recognizing outstanding philanthropists within Indian Country. This year we recognize The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, whose mission is "transforming lives and strengthening communities by fostering innovation, creating knowledge and promoting social progress". Throughout the Pacific Northwest, exceptional nonprofit groups are strengthening Native communities. Some provide much-needed loans to Native entrepreneurs and free technical training to Tribal leaders, while others focus on preserving and celebrating the rich Native heritage and cultures that are deeply rooted throughout the region. These groups fill a crucial gap by serving populations that often have limited access to traditional funding and other resources. The Foundation is working to make these groups stronger and even more effective. Follow this link to learn how The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation is Partnering with Native Communities Leadership Honoring Awardee The Pearl Capoeman-Baller Civic Participation Award Julie Johnson, Sa Leit Sa (Lummi), is President of JJ Inc. and has over 25 years of experience working for 42 Tribes and Indian organizations at the regional and national level. She is married to Ron Johnson (Makah) and has two sons and six grandchildren. Julie holds two B.A. Degrees in Education Counseling and Social and Health Administration. She was appointed by two Governors to the Peninsula College Board of Trustees and served two 5 year terms, with four as Chair. She has also served on the Northwest Indian College Board of Trustees. 43 Indian Women Leaders in the past 16 years, Julie has volunteered to organize the National Indian Women Supporting Each Other Honoring Luncheon during the National Congress of American Indians Conference in Washington, D.C. In recognition of her leadership, the Native tradition of giving is truly embodied by Julie and deserving of recognition. Cedar Tree Fund The Hugh & Jane Ferguson Foundation together with another family foundation have provided Potlatch Fund with grants specific to the purchase of cedar trees for cultural purposes. In 2010 an old growth cedar was harvested on behalf of the Makah Tribe. In 2011 a cedar log was purchased for the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, and this past Friday another tree was harvested. John Mullen, Master Carver Snoqualmie Tribe John Mullen, Snoqualmie Tribal Member and Master Carver, has been looking for an old growth cedar tree to transform into a canoe for the better part of a year. John s found more than one tree that he felt suitable, but it was not until this past Friday that John found the right tree. Once he found the tree at High Point (Issaquah, WA), things moved quickly. The tree was blessed on Saturday then dropped the same day. The tree should be delivered to the Tribe this Friday, and then the process of curing the log will begin. We look forward to watching the John, and others, transform the log into a river canoe, cedar hats, and more. Follow this link for more photos. 45 2012 Annual Gala raises record amount: $176,000! Among Northwest Coastal Tribes, a potlatch is a coming together, in ceremony, celebration, and giving. Potlatches have always embodied the best of what Native culture personify, and strengthen community ties, with food, song, and above all else, sharing. As a way of honoring the spirit of the potlatch, our annual GALA brings together leaders from Tribal and grassroots organizations, foundations, corporations, and individual community members. In 2011 Potlatch Fund announced that the 2012 GALA would be held at the Tulalip Resort. The move to a Tribal venue resonated with the values and mission of Potlatch Fund as it was yet another way the organization could support Tribes and Tribal enterprises. During our first Gala Committee meeting, held in January 2012, we set goals for the event. The truth be told, we were more than a little nervous about how changing the venue would impact what has become a Signature Event in the Northwest. The support received by Tribes, Native nonprofits, Foundations, Corporations, individual supporters and grassroot leaders only increased in momentum as the night of the GALA neared. And in the end all of our fears were for not, and all of the preparation that went into the event was rewarded! Our hands are raised to everyone one who contributed to the success of our Tenth Annual Gala! 46 3rd Annual Silent Auction The Third Silent Auction was held during the networking reception portion of our Tenth Annual Gala. The reception area was transformed into a beautiful gallery, showcasing 52 items, and the atmosphere was electric. Over 500 guests had an opportunity to view original works, meet the artists, and support Potlatch Fund's grantmaking program. The Third Silent Auction, like the rest of the evening, exceeded our expectations. With your help we raised $12,095 through the Silent Auction alone! The entire amount will be used to help fund our 2013 Native Arts grantmaking program. The 2012 recipients, honored at our Tenth Annual Gala, are: Johnpaul Jones (Choctaw / Cherokee) Antone Minthorn Economic and Community Development Award 2012 Leadership Honoring Video Now Playing on YouTube Produced by Longhouse Media Julie Johnson, Sa'Leit'sa (Lummi) Pearl Capoeman-Baller Civic Participation Award Brian Cladoosby, Speepots (Swinomish) Billy Frank Jr. Natural Resource Protection Award Martina Whelshula, PhD (Colville) Patricia Whitefoot Education Award Chief Delvis Heath, Sr. (Warm Springs) Fran James Cultural Preservation Award Philanthropist of the Year Award At our Gala Potlatch Fund honors the Native tradition of giving by recognizing For more than 15 years, The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has partnered with key nonprofit organizations that serve Tribal communities in a variety of critical ways. Some of these groups provide much-needed loans to Native entrepreneurs and free technical training to Tribal leaders, while others focus on preserving and celebrating the rich Native heritage and cultures that are deeply rooted throughout the region. These groups fill a crucial gap by serving populations that often have limited access to traditional funding and other resources. With an investment of more than $10

47 outstanding philanthropists within Indian Country. This year we recognize The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, for their support of Native communities across the Pacific Northwest. funding and other resources. With an investment of more than $10 million to date, the Foundation has helped make these groups stronger and more effective. Through its funding, the Foundation has helped to foster vibrant art and culture, individual wellness, economic security for families and healthy youth in our Native communities, Through its leadership, it is putting the spotlight on an important area of attention for our region and attracting other funders to join in its efforts. Social Innovation Award In 2011, Potlatch Fund received a gift from one of our founding donors to mark our tenth anniversary. Through the Social Innovation Award, we seek to recognize and honor our Native nonprofit grantees who have demonstrated innovative approaches. This year we recognize the Nez Perce Appaloosa Horse Club. Members on an island at Nez Perce Ford on Yellowstone River. In the words of Rosa Yearout, Nez Perce Appaloosa Horse Club Board President: Our Club is innovative and unique in the use of our horses to connect the events of our past Nimiipuu history to the present and the future. We do this by bringing the entire family into our sacred circle by including everyone in the Club s horsemanship clinics, trail rides, campouts, community service projects, parades, and especially participation in tribal cultural events and memorial ceremonies involving our horses along the Nez Perce Trail when we honor our ancestors and foster healing among the living. At every opportunity, we try to include prayers to our Creator led by members of all ages. Members listening to Tribal historian Otis Halfmoon tell a Nez Perce Tribal legend around the campfire on the Lolo Trail. Another aspect of our uniqueness is that we are the only horse group that we know of where most of the members do not own a horse, so we use Tribal and personal horses of Club members for the adults and youth to use in our Club s riding and community activities. Our annual clinics for the youth during their school spring break provide an opportunity for our older youth leaders to instruct and pass on to the younger members what they learned from their elders about horses and horsemanship. We get a new crop of kids each year. We also provide adult riding to teach and re-teach older people to ride and enjoy the horses. We work with elders to give demonstrations and to teach the youth their culture and history.

48 Your Opportunity to Support Potlatch Fund Even if you could not attend our Tenth Annual Gala, you can still lend us your support and have a positive impact on the work Potlatch Fund undertakes in Northwest Indian Country.
