11 Appendix Texas state agencies and institutions of higher education are required to report to the Legislative Budget Board information about requests and awards for all federal financial assistance (V.T.C.A. Government Code, Section ). The LBB developed an automated system whereby state agencies and institutions of higher education report quarterly information directly into the Federal Funds Application Database. Awarded amounts vary from reported actual or estimated federal expenditures and are based on project periods which may not coincide with state or federal fiscal years. The report is a summary of 1997 assistance award information as it was reported by each agency. Information was received by the Legislative Budget Board for the reporting periods of September 1, 1996 to November 30, 1996; December 1, 1996 to February 29, 1997; March 1, 1997 to May 31, 1997; and June 1, 1997 to August 31, Although every effort was made to work closely with agencies to correct obvious errors and to avoid duplicate information, it is important to remember that this data has been neither edited nor verified by the LBB and inaccuracies may exist. Data may be incomplete if agencies failed to comply with reporting deadlines. A subsequent summary report of 1997 assistance awards information to institutions of higher education is forthcoming. Maureen McCormack and Ellen Coker of the Federal Funds Analysis Team prepared these reports

12 1997 Federal Assistance Awards to Instutitions of Higher Education Legislative Budget Board December 1997 Executive Summary Texas state agencies and institutions of higher education are required to report to the Legislative Budget Board information regarding requests and awards for all federal financial assistance (V.T.C.A. The report is a summary of 1997 assistance award information as reported by each university*. Information was received by the Legislative Budget Board for the reporting periods of September 1, 1996 to November 30, 1996; December 1, 1996 to February 29, 1997; March 1, 1997 to May 31, 1997; and June 1, 1997 to August 31, Institutions of higher education report research awards and non-research federal awards separately. Due to the high volume of research awards, universities report an annual aggregate total for research awards below $500,000 per year instead of each individual award. Research awards that exceed $500,000 per year are reported in the same manner as non-research awards. All research awards are included in this report.
