1 2016 Annual Report 1
2 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR & CEO In 2008, a group of forward-thinking community leaders took a bold and pioneering step. They created a community foundation for Utah the first of its kind in our state. They planted the seeds that continue to grow into an enduring local resource, and created a way for caring individuals to have a positive impact on our community for years to come. As we continue to grow philanthropy in our community, the programs, services, and support we provide have also grown significantly. In our 2016 Annual Report we bring you a snapshot of what we do year round innovative, sustainable grantmaking. Read on to learn how we: Supported the research and treatment of migraine disease through one of our Donor Advised Funds, the Danielle Byron Henry Migraine Foundation Supported Utah refugees with a grant to the East African Refugee Goat Project Grew funds to address homelessness in Salt Lake City Convened environmental organizations from across Utah for a shark tank -style grantmaking event This report highlights our collective impact and demonstrates how when we work together, we have the power to make a real difference. By bringing together partner organizations and donor resources, we are creating effective solutions that benefit the whole community. Please consider joining us in 2017 as we work together with you to build better Utah communities. Thank you for making Utah a better place for all of us! Alex Eaton, CEO Jeramy Lund, Board Chair 1

4 CFU IN ACTION SEEKING SOLUTIONS Danielle Byron Henry Migraine Foundation Over 38 million Americans suffer from migraines, yet migraine research and treatment remains severely underfunded. Since March 2016, The Danielle Byron Henry Migraine Foundation, a donor advised fund at CFU, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to increase awareness of migraine disease and provide access to treatment and support. BUILDING STRONGER NONPROFITS Social Investors Forum Each year, CFU hosts the Social Investors Forum, an event for organizations to pitch innovative ideas to solve social problems. In 2016, five of the 33 applicants were chosen to pitch, and the East African Refugee Goat Project was awarded a $30,000 capital investment and ongoing mentoring. With the help of this funding, the Project continues to raise goats to generate income and provide college scholarships for refugee youth. TARGETING HOMELESSNESS Housing & Homelessness Prevention Fund The Housing and Homelessness Prevention Fund was established in 2015 to combat homelessness in Utah and help low-income individuals gain access to life -changing resources. In 2016, we built a strong foundation for the fund by assembling an advisory committee of community leaders, identifying priorities, and raising funds. Between 2015 and 2016, we raised over $950,000 from Intermountain Healthcare, Wells Fargo, Salt Lake City Corporation, Goldman Sachs, and private donors. INNOVATIVE GRANTMAKING Utah s Natural Heritage Fund Utah s Natural Heritage Fund hosted the 2016 Environmental Investors Forum to support innovative organizations and encourage dialogue around Utah s environment. The Forum, modeled after the Social Investors Forum, gave six organizations the opportunity to pitch their programs. A panel of Utah s environmental leaders assessed the pitches on innovation, impact, and sustainability. The groups selected to receive funding were: Utah Diné Bikéyah, Green Urban Lunch Box, Four Corners School of Outdoor Education, and the Biodiversity and Conservation Ecology Laboratory at the University of Utah.
