1 Seeking business facing experts in technology research development and commercialization, marketing and management Lancaster University is embarking on a new initiative to leverage its global reach for increasing the level of international collaboration between UK and Chinese companies, via collaborative research, development and commercialisation. Guangdong Provincial Department of Science & Technology (GPOST) and Lancaster University (LU) will work together and with other UK and Chinese partners as appropriate, to develop a series of specific business-to-business partnerships between UK Chinese technological companies. This project will involve, in the next 4-5 years, a bilateral collaborative industrial R&D programme and joint activities in training, promoting and developing international partnerships. These partnerships will increase UK and Chinese company collaboration in the development of new technology-based products, processes and services for selling on global market. This has been made possible by the award of over 4m in funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Lancashire County Council. We are seeking to build an international team, with hubs in both the UK and China and are now seeing to recruit 3 individuals to undertake primarily China-based roles. The post-holders will be core in the development and delivery of the overall project which will provide high growth, technology-based SMEs with access to long-term support and resources to enable them to develop their leadership, innovation and collaborative capacity and undertake substantive, long-term programmes of collaborative R&D to underpin new product development with UK and Chinese academic and business partners. We are looking for team players who, together, will have strengths in working with businesses, an understanding of knowledge transfer and the ability to devise new ways to help companies innovate, strong technology skills and an empathy with technology-inspired innovation and growth. All the three posts will be based in China but will involve travel in the UK and China. The China Catalyst Project This 5.1 million initiative includes a broad range of areas across Lancaster University including; science and technology, design, management and the Confucius Institute, with key partners in Guangdong Province, China. Over a period of four years, the project will engage with several hundred technology- focused small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and facilitate 80 of these to develop collaborative research and development for new product development through robust partnerships with businesses located in the Guangdong Province. The UK companies will develop specific collaborative project with one or more Chinese academic and/or business partners. These projects will be focusing on the development of new products for international markets, including China. This will be enabled by the resourcing of graduate-calibre teams with science,
2 technology, management and design expertise, to work with UK and Chinese partners on specific collaborative projects in both the UK and China. The project is funded by HEFCE, participant business contributions, Lancashire County Council and the Guangdong Provincial Office for Science & Technology. Key partners will include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, UK Trade & Investment, China-Britain Business Council and the Technology Strategy Board. Priority technology areas have been identified which match key UK growth sectors to the key industrial sectors of Guangdong Province: energy, environmental protection, new vehicle technology, materials, photonics, ICT, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing. The UK China Catalyst Team This is a very challenging, exciting and high-profile new initiative. Collectively the team we employ will have a broad experience, ranging from marketing and technology transfer and commercialisation to collaborative research with industry and research organisations in China. In addition, excellent client and project management skills are required. We have described the tasks we expect the team to be capable of in each job descriptions these are grouped into two manager roles and a project administrator. One of the mangers will focus on marketing and technology commercialisation and business engagement, another will be mainly responsible for facilitate technology R&D but we expect and hope for a great deal of overlap between these roles from the individuals we employ.
