1 September 11 th National Day of Service & Remembrance Project TM Join Operation Goody Bag s COMMIT to COLOR CHALLENGE 2013 THE CHALLENGE: In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with supporting this effort across the country. For the 10th anniversary, CNCS offered a nation-wide challenge to engage volunteers in service activities on September 11, More than 140 organizations took part in this effort with 14 finalists receiving grants to support their commitment to engaging volunteers in 9/11 anniversary projects through September 11, THE WINNER: Operation Goody Bag, a student-centered, community service project based in Bergen County New Jersey, received top awards for organizing a total of 16,000 participants! Volunteers colored Goody Bags, filled them with treats and wrote thank you letters to Military Men and Women, Veterans, and First Responders to express appreciation for their efforts to keep America safe. THE OPPORTUNITY: Your organization can help us by hosting a Goody Bag coloring event at your location. It s easy! But more importantly, it s POWERFUL! Participants take just one hour in the days leading up to September 11, 2013, to reflect on the memory while coloring a Goody Bag for America s First Responders and Troops. 2 4 Easy Steps to COMMIT to COLOR! STEP 1: VOLUNTEER your Organization 1. Present OGB Commit to Color challenge to your organization for approval. 2. Arrange date & time for your C2C event to occur between 9/1-9/11/ Determine the number of custom printed Goody Bags needed. *FREE local pickup and dropoff available at OGB Headquarters, 545 Route 17 South, Paramus, NJ *Not local? Goody Bags will be shipped in boxed sets of 250 at a cost of $20 per box to cover shipping and handling. Payment by check only made out to Operation Goody Bag. 4. Complete the attached Pledge Form and mail with shipping and handling payment check ($20 per set of 250 Goody Bags if not participating in free local pickup) to: Operation Goody Bag P.O. Box 25 Paramus, NJ You will receive confirmation when your Pledge Form and payment has been processed. STEP 2: PREPARE for your event 1. Distribute the attached Event Directions to team leaders/groups. 2. Distribute blank Goody Bags to team leaders / groups. 3. Prepare statement to share on day of event: 9/11 Remembrance to honor sacrifices of First Responders and our Troops. STEP 3: MANAGE the day 1. Share prepared statement with participants. 2. Review Event Directions. 3. Distribute blank Goody Bags to participants 4. Color! Say thanks! Have fun and collect completed Goody Bags. STEPS 4: RETURN the Goody Bags 1. Re-confirm the number of participants and number of completed Goody Bags. 2. Fill out Project Completion Report. 3. Box the Goody Bags for shipping and include 1 Project Completion Report INSIDE each box. 4. Mail Boxes to; Operation Goody Bag, PO Box 25, Paramus, NJ OR Drop off Return Boxes to OGB Headquarters, 545 Route 17 South, Paramus, NJ All Boxes should be mailed or dropped off to HQ by October 1, *NOTE: If you wish to share photographs of your event with Operation Goody Bag, please include a CD of images as well as the attached Photography Release form and all required individual releases and documentation in hard copy with your Boxes. 4 COMMIT to COLOR Event Directions TM DAY OF EVENT: 1. Share prepared statement with participants. 2. Read Coloring directions: Fill out name & organization on printed side of Goody Bag. Color only on the blank side of Goody Bag. DO NOT color on top 2 inches of blank side as this will be folded over. USE markers or crayons only. DO NOT use glue, chalk or glitter! Include only positive messages. Need inspiration? Use a line from song, TV show or cartoon character. 3. Distribute blank Goody Bags. 5. Color! Say thanks! Have fun! 6. Collect colored Goody Bags. 7. Follow Event Overview instructions on post-event steps for Box shipment / drop off and return by October 1, Thank you for participating!
