Makerspace meeting

Type of Strategy Pilot a new strategy Sustain or provide additional support to an existing strategy Our community is submitting multiple existing strategies

Community Engagement Who will you help? 1. Students/underserved youth, by providing unique/expanded access to STEM training and facilities; 2. Local businesses, by developing a potential workforce pipeline for advanced manufacturing occupations; and 3. Community arts organizations, through better integration into educational programming and dedicated space.

Community Engagement What s your story? Lot s of vision success, but we can do better: 22% of our families earn income at or below $35,000 >40% of economically-disadvantage TTSD middle school students meet achievement standards in math. Even fewer English-learner middle schoolers (18%) Employers in Advanced Manufacturing (22% of total city employment, average wage = $85,000), finding it increasingly difficult to find STEM-proficient employees

Community Engagement What are you trying to do? Increase STEAM learning Connect colleges /high schools to increase post K-12 awareness Promote business education for youth and entrepreneurs Grow mentorship programs for underserved populations Facilitate access to technology for all income groups Connect residents to training and employment resources Expand skills training to match local jobs Develop gathering locations where people can meet socially Expand arts opportunities

Community Engagement Who are you engaging? Tualatin Chamber Mask & Mirror Community Theatre STEM Partnership City of Tualatin Advisory Boards and Committees Arts Advisory Committee Tomorrow Advisory Committee Youth Advisory Council Juanita Pohl Center Steering Committee Washington County Clackamas County Hispanic Community Churches Performing Arts Groups Tigard-Tualatin School District Portland Community College Residents Business Community Non-Profit Partners Prospective Facility User Groups

How are you engaging them? Print Content Fact Sheets Newsletters Fliers Brochures Project Displays/Posters Comment Forms Newspaper/Newsletter Inserts Project /Meeting Announcement Signs Public Meetings Public Workshops Traveling Exhibit Focus Groups Small Group Discussions/ Interviews Online Communications Tualatin ABC/City/Chamber Website Online Forum Distribution List Social Media Media & Advertisements News Releases/ Flash Alert Media Kits Paid Advertisements Promotional Items Additional Outreach to Individuals & Groups ABC Team Tours Video

Vision and Strategy Big Picture Narrative Our revitalization plan is focused on increasing opportunity and standard of living for all population segments. While we continue to seek solutions to all community-defined needs and priorities described in our Tualatin Tomorrow Vision, our ABC initiative is hyper-focused on one specific target: connecting youth and underserved populations to STEAM education and CTE training that align with our advanced manufacturing industry base. In addition to providing jobs and personal growth opportunities for residents, we can begin to develop a workforce pipeline for a large crosssection of our employers.

Vision and Strategy Short-term: Mobile Maker Space 1. Increase access to STEAM learning resources; 2. Promote career pathway opportunities and CTE education; and 3. Establish training and internship connections with employers Long-term: Community Career & Creative Center 1. Provide space to add larger equipment, classes and workshops. 2. Integrate performing arts (maker space students could design sets, props and costumes for performances). 3. Expand career and technical education awareness at the center, by providing information to kids and parents, and creating mentorship opportunities.

Vision and Strategy Challenges to address? Employers find it increasingly difficult to fill openings with local labor Advanced Manufacturing is region's largest and fastest growing industry sector. Nearly half those jobs are located in Tualatin /adjacent communities. Direct action needed to maintain pipeline of workers and replace baby boomers. The advanced manufacturing sector houses 425 unique occupations. While certain occupations require higher levels of education (engineers and managers); nearly two-thirds of the sector s jobs require less than an Associate degree. 75 % of all advanced manufacturing jobs held by men (53% for all sectors in our region).

Vision and Strategy Alignment with Oregon s STEM Learning Goals Double # of students in STEM programs Double # of students w STEM degrees Grow learning community to improve delivery Connect businesses to schools Increase STEM Workforce Enhance access to existing regional STEM and CTE facilities and improve infrastructure, equipment and machinery in existing STEM /CTE facilities to absorb more students

Vision and Strategy Alignment with Regional Equity and Advancement Goals Advance CTE by activating industry in training and education Own, practice and perfect diversity Close income gap in underrepresented, disadvantaged pops. Develop a regional public-private higher education network Alignment with Oregon s State Education Goal Create pathways for students: 40% Bachelor s Degree or Higher (34%); 40% Associate s Degree/ Certification (8%); 20% High School Degree (22%); and 0% No High School Diploma (10%).
