3 Contact Information JPL Minority Education Initiatives Dr. Eva Graham, Manager Minority Education Initiatives (818) (Point of Contact) Ms. Rita Torres Minority Education Initiatives (818) Website: Program Overview The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Summer High School Internship Program (SpaceSHIP) is designed for high school students who have demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM). One of SpaceSHIP's objectives is to encourage pre-college students who have been traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields to consider such fields for their careers. The mentors for the SpaceSHIP program are some of NASA's top science professionals. They mentor students while conducting innovative research and working on state-of-the-art equipment. During a SpaceSHIP internship, students conduct meaningful research, earn a stipend for their services, develop and enhance their oral and written communication skills, expand their computer skills and develop their leadership skills. Students also have an opportunity to develop and prepare written technical reports and abstracts, make a formal final presentation, interact with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and participate in numerous enrichment activities. Located in Pasadena, California, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is the leading center in the United States for robotic exploration of the solar system. JPL is managed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and administered by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). 4 Eligibility Requirements Students must be U.S. citizens. All participants must be at least 16 years old at the time of participation (June 25 to August 3, 2007). Students must be able to communicate fluently in written and spoken English. With the exception of the letters of reference, this application must be completed by the student, and represent the student s own work. All high school students must live within 50 miles of JPL s Oak Grove facility (in Pasadena, California) All applicants must provide evidence of a 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). Student application must provide evidence of interest in and aptitude for science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics. Students must provide their own transportation to and from JPL. Program Duration 6 weeks, including a 1-day training/orientation June 25 - August 3, :30am 4:30pm, Monday through Friday Stipend $2000 per internship (taxable) Submission Deadline The application must be postmarked no later than March 9, Students will be notified 4-6 weeks after deadline. Location of Internship All internship activities take place at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California unless otherwise specified. 5 Application Components The completed SpaceSHIP application form must be submitted by the deadline of March 9, A completed application includes: Student information sheet Parental consent form 300-word essay Summary of science, math, and technology courses taken Extracurricular activities involvement Parent or guardian signatures where required Copy of transcripts showing a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (out of 4.0) Copy of birth certificate as proof of age (16 or older) and U.S. citizenship Two signed letters of recommendation from teachers Please visit the website calendar for application process deadlines and updates.
