THE MISSION The mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. KEY NEW INITIATIVES FOR FOCUS ON MILLENNIALS: In 2015, the district council commissioned a research study on the opinions, attitudes and plans of people living within the district or inside the Beltway, aged between 20 and 37. In the coming year, ULI Washington will continue to focus on this demographic as they begin to form families. Future research will examine how to keep these Millennials in the urban core as they begin to form families. REGIONAL IDENTITY: In the Washington region, interjurisdictional competition is detrimental to creating a vibrant economy and future. In order to enhance regional cooperation, the district council is encouraging the development of a regional identity that can draw together the business, government and nonprofit sectors to promote the region s diverse economy and opportunities while developing a spirit of collaboration. PUBLIC SECTOR URBANPLAN: UrbanPlan, a ULI curriculum to teach high school and college students about the elements of development is being transformed for use with public officials. The goal of the new program is to contribute to the understanding of the development process by newly elected and appointed local government decision makers through a hands-on learning activity.
