1 Fundraising guide Want to support the M2O, but don t know how? Check out the quick and easy event guides in our booklet for ideas on the sort of fundraising efforts you could arrange in your area. 2 We need your help! Last year, our cycling fundraiser raised 20,000 for our charity partner. Most of the fundraising was centred around donations to the main event - but we think we can do even better this year if we get everyone across the business involved. You don t have to be riding a bike to make a difference! In this booklet, you ll find some ideas for events you could run in your area to raise funds. Each event comes with a simple outline, details of the location and materials you ll need, an estimate of the costs you ll incur and a guideline donation amount which should help you cover those costs and make some money for the charity. These aren t the only events you can run - be as creative as you like if you have a better idea. All we ask is that you spread the word, drum up as much support as you can for our charity week, and send pictures galore back to us at communications@menziesdistribution.com, so we can blog about what a great job you re doing via MenziesM2O.wordpress.com. After the week is over, we ll be awarding a new Digital Camera to the person who submits the best photo - another great reason for you to share your memorable moments. On the back page of the booklet, you ll also find a copy of our official sponsor form. Please use this to collect pledges, as it has all the necessary features to let us claim Gift Aid on behalf of our charities. Now, onto the events...
3 A group of volunteers, typically drawn from the management team in your area, offer their services as car washers for the day. #1 - The Charity Car wash We estimate a minimum of five people will be needed to run the event. The event will require an open, outdoor space, with plenty of room for volunteers to work - and which has easy access to water. A car park is the ideal location. Sponges, buckets, cleaning fluids and lots of water - preferably through a hose, to make life a little easier. We estimate minimal costs of around 10-15, covering some plastic buckets, basic sponges and cleaning fluids. We recommend a minimum of 5 per car.
4 Supporters make a donation to take part in a table sport or game against their colleagues - to the winners go the bragging rights! #2 - Table Sports Challenge We expect that two people will play a game at any one time, although teams of two might work dependant on the game. The event will require a space big enough to accomodate the table games you want to set up, so it can be scaled to fit almost any location. Table Tennis or Fussball tables for the bigger games, Chess, Draughts or other board game sets for smaller options. We think this one should be pretty much free - just work with the games you have access to, or which team members can bring in. We recommend a minimum of 50p per player, per game.
5 By studying their baby photos, supporters try to identify as many colleagues as possible. Pride and prizes will be on the line... #3 - Baby Guess Who Any number of people can play the game; we recommend that you secure baby photos from at least 30 colleagues. The event will require access to a wall or pinboard where all the photos can be displayed. Baby photos from those agreeing to take part; a display area; number labels for the photos; and entry forms listing the names of those in the photos, which players can use to submit their guesses. The cost will depend on the prizes you choose to give out to those who guess correctly - we recommend a prize pool of around 10. We recommend a minimum of 50p per player.
6 Entrants whip up their finest baked goods and submit them to a panel of enthusiastic judges for tasting... then the cakes are sold for charity. #4 - Great Menzies Bake-off As many bakers and buyers as possible: the more cakes, the more tasting, the more money raised. The event will only require a space to lay out the cakes, where judging can be conducted, winners announced and the bake sale held. It s scalable to most places dependant on participation. A table, napkins, paper plates and some prizes. It s up to you to decide which prizes and for which categories. The cost will depend on the prizes you choose to give out to the winners - we recommend a prize pool of We recommend 1 to enter and 50p to buy a portion of cake.
7 Supporters compete in a range of traditional Sports Day games, such as the Sack race, to win a coveted range of plastic medals. #5 - Sports Day As many people as possible. If you work in a location with lots of people, they could compete in departmental teams etc. A large open space is preferable for Sports Day games - soft and grassy if possible, although you can work with what s available. Equipment for the various games you want to run: sacks for the sack race, scarves for tying teams together in the 3-legged race, eggs and spoons... your imagination is the only limit. The estimated cost is 20 for medals or prizes, as we think most of the equipment can be sourced for free. We recommend a minimum of 1 per entrant, per event.
8 Volunteers climb behind a cut-out board and supporters pelt them with wet sponges. Great fun if you re the one holding a sponge. #6 - Sponge-shooting gallery The board will typically have 2-3 spaces for volunteers to occupy. As many supporters can take part as show an appetite for it! The event is best suited to a large, outdoor area where it doesn t matter if water is splashed around - a car park is ideal. A board with cut-out holes for heads to fit through; buckets and sponges; plenty of water; volunteers willing to be sponged. We estimate costs of around 10-15, covering some plastic buckets and basic sponges, plus 10 for an appropriate cut-out board (although it s possible to DIY them!). Total budget: 25 We recommend a price of 1 for a two-sponge salvo.
9 Teams of supporters battle it out to answer the questions posed by a volunteer quizmaster. Laughs and a suitable trophy will doubtless be had. #7 - Quiz Night As many people as possible. We recommend registering participants in teams of 4. An area with tables and seats to suit your numbers - this could be anything from an office, to a canteen, to a local pub. A willing quizmaster, some decent questions and a supply of paper and pens for the teams to submit their answers on. You might also need someone to enforce a mobile phone ban... We think you could probably do this for free, although building in some catering could be a hit - check with your punters. We recommend a donation of 1 per team member.
10 A team of volunteers - typically local managers - cook breakfast for the whole team. Supporters donate in appreciation! #8 - Breakfast at Menzies This will depend on your facilities and the number of your volunteers - how many cooks can your kitchen accomodate? A kitchen or canteen area, with access to a cooker - or an outdoor barbeque if the weather will allow? Facilities to cook, food supplies, disposable plates and cutlery, some Chef s hats for extra colour. We estimate that a Bacon roll will cost around 85p to make, so including butter and various sauces, you re probably looking at 1 per serving. We recommend asking supporters for 2 per roll as a donation.
11 ...and remember why we re doing all this: This year, we re using all funds raised through the M2O Cycle and related events to support two charities which work with children. CHILDREN 1ST have been working across Scotland for over 125 years to ensure safer, happier childhoods and brighter futures for Scotland s most vulnerable children. They work with children and their families to support them through issues such as abuse, neglect, poverty, parental drug and alcohol misuse and family breakdown. The charity passionately believes that, provided it is safe to do so, the best place for a child to grow up is within their family. They offer the support that families need to become safer and stronger, and to give their children the best start in life. Anthony Nolan saves the lives of children (and adults) with blood cancer by using their register to find remarkable people willing to donate their bone marrow. Around 30,000 people are diagnosed with blood cancer every year in the UK. Childhood leukaemia is the most common form of cancer in children. For many people with blood cancer, a bone marrow (or stem cell) transplant is their last chance of survival. There are around 1,700 people in the UK in need of a bone marrow transplant. Anthony Nolan s aim is to find a suitable donor for every person in need of a bone marrow transplant....so get out there and get fundraising!
