1 INTRODUCTION TO THE AUSTRALIA-ASEAN BUSINESS COUNCIL China Need For Change Asia Pacific is the global growth centre for the next 20 years, driven by the fast growing consumer class and rapid urbanisation across the region, and led by China, India and ASEAN. India ASEAN Multinational companies (MNCs) are increasingly taking a regional perspective and approach to their business strategy, seeing massive opportunities in both diversity and similarity across markets. This builds on the economic integration initiatives across the region including: ASEAN Economic Community (single market) Regional free trade agreements (FTAs) like the RCEP, TPP and ASEAN agreements with Australia/NZ, China, India, Japan and Korea China s Belt and Road Initiative.! Approach Required Our markets are increasingly regionally connected, fast moving and digital. The old MNC strategy of expanding to familiar markets and doing business as usual won t work today. A new approach is required. Today, MNCs must be agile and responsive to opportunities and challenges as they arise across the different markets in the region. To do this, MNCs need a regional capability in discovering market intelligences, accommodating market differences, and managing market risks. In the Australia-ASEAN region, this regional capability relies more on trusted business relationships and arrangements through networks and collaborations, than on black letter regulation and law with layers of internal decision-making bureaucracy. HOW WE HELP The Australia-ASEAN Business Council is a private sector driven, not-for-profit organisation. It is revitalising as a powerful 2-way B2B regional platform for leading Australian and ASEAN businesses to work together in realising the massive business opportunity across the region. The platform facilitates connections, collaborations, intelligence and influence in making business happen, and helps develop and support the regional capabilities of members. This platform is connected to government, business, entrepreneur and academic networks at national and regional levels across Australia and ASEAN. 3 President s Message This is an extraordinary and exciting time, place and opportunity for growing Australian and ASEAN businesses. ASEAN is a global hotspot, driven by the fast growing consumer class and rapid urbanisation, and with China and India, will be the global growth centre for the next 20 years. The figures are impressive. World s 3 rd largest population (over 620 million), more than half under 30 years of age, 3 rd largest workforce, 3 rd largest mobile subscriptions, with large shifts of the population into the consumer class and urban areas. The 10 countries differ in culture, languages, resources and business environment, and are a mixture of mature, emerging and Dialogue with the Hon Scott Morrison MP, Treasurer of Australia, November 2017 frontier markets. Traditionally, this diversity is seen as a barrier, but businesses both local and international are finding complementarities across these markets. Regional is increasingly replacing bilateral as the business approach to ASEAN and surrounds. Business opportunities for trade and investment are massive across all sectors in ASEAN. Yet despite the strong trading relationship between Australia and ASEAN, the investment relationship is limited, explaining the lack of visibility of Australian companies in ASEAN and ASEAN companies in Australia. Dr Robert Yap (Chair ASEAN BAC 2018), Eleanor Mak, Jane Duke (Australia s Ambassador to ASEAN), Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid, Khun Arin Jira (Co-Chair ASEAN BAC 2018) This is the focus of the Australia-ASEAN Business Council advancing Australia-ASEAN business. Australian companies are a potentially strong fit with ASEAN businesses. Australian businesses are typically asset rich in innovation and resilience in competitive markets, while ASEAN businesses are often cash rich in growth and diversity including access to market scale. And ASEAN sits on Australia s doorstep. The Council, incorporated in 2007, played a strong role in the development of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. The Council s DNA is its regional focus and approach to business across the Australia-ASEAN region. I am privileged to lead the recent revitalisation of the Council in advancing Australia-ASEAN business. Over the last 2 years, we have many firsts in building our 2-way B2B regional platform of connections, collaborations, intelligence and influence for example: Appointment of the esteemed Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid (President ASEAN Business Club, Chair ASEAN Business Advisory Council Malaysia, Chairman Bank Muamalat Malaysia) as our ASEAN Patron Hosted ASEAN Business Club (2017) and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (2018) on their first official visits to Australia Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid, Honorary ASEAN Patron Hosted 1 st and 2 nd ASEAN-Australia Entrepreneurs Business Forum in Melbourne (2017) and Sydney (2018) Page 3 of 6

6 Words from Our Network The Australia-ASEAN Business Council s (AABC) partnered with the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division of ESCAP in two events during 2017: The ASEAN Economic Integration Forum 2017 and the Youth and Digital Economy event during the Trade and Investment Week. AABC s support in helping facilitate the participation of ASEAN young entrepreneurs as speakers in the event and reaching out to promote the event through their networks is highly appreciated. We count on AABC s support in promoting sustainable trade and investment and responsible business in the region for the benefit of all. Mia Mikic, Director United Nations ESCAP Malaysian Association of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs (MAAYE) has a strong relationship with the AABC. MAAYE was the first ASEAN organisation to partner with AABC and we are proud to have initiated AABC s endorsement and introduction to the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council (AYEC). Our Malaysian young entrepreneur leaders have appreciated connecting with the Australian entrepreneur and start-up ecosystem through the ASEAN entrepreneur delegations hosted by AABC in Australia. This ongoing engagement relationship is critical as Malaysia prepares for IR 4.0. Deborah Bottreau, President Malaysian Association of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs. ASEAN-Australia Business Council is our regional platform between ASEAN and Australia for doing business, sharing opportunities and supporting Peter McKenna, Managing Director Venturenauts, Mia Mikic, Director UN ESCAP, Eleanor Mak ASEAN Economic Integration Forum, Bangkok 2017 valuable and friendly relationships. The ASEAN Young Entrepreneur Council Forums in Sydney in 2018 and Melbourne in 2017 were great opportunities for Myanmar and our ASEAN colleagues to observe the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Australia and strengthen ties. For example, we were able to learn how to start up an incubation centre for entrepreneurship development, which is a really important factor for business developments in Myanmar. 1st ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council Business Mission to Australia, Monash University, 2017 As MYEA, we are honoured to be able to take part in many of these activities. We are ready to assist you in the future for other activities and we hope that AABC will bring better opportunities within ASEAN and Australia. Htun Htun Naing, President Myanmar Young Entrepreneurs Association YEAC presents its appreciation and grateful to Australia-ASEAN Business Council s (AABC) for the recent and successful ASEAN-Australia Special summit in Sydney, March Cambodian delegates from YEAC had the privilege to travel to Sydney for this forum and found it a very valuable opportunity for YEAC members to network and identify business to business connections with Australia. On behalf of Cambodian delegates and the YEAC, I express my sincere gratitude to AABC and Australian Government, especially NSW Government in supporting YEAC as members of the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council (AYEC) for the support and good relations. We can see the crucial role of AABC in connecting and bridging the gap between ASEAN and Australia, particularly for Cambodia and Australia relations. We love to see more collaborations between YEAC and AABC and between Cambodia and Australia in the future. 2 nd ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Business Mission to Australia, UNSW Sydney, 2018 Peter McKenna chairing a session at the 2017 ASEAN Economic Integration Forum, with James Evans (Regional Legal Counsel Linfox), United Nations ESCAP, Bangkok, 2017 William Kouch Pheng, President Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia Page 6 of 6
