1 Student/Faculty Undergraduate Scholarly Collaboration Fellowships Summary Through the generosity of the Seidler Fund, the Dean s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences will provide funding for faculty/student creative work/research/scholarship to take place during the summer of Successful proposals will demonstrate a mentoring relationship between faculty and student that encourages scholarly/creative work in a collaborative environment. Some projects may be fully completed during the summer time frame, and others will represent the initiation of long-term, continuing projects. Both approaches are encouraged and can be supported through the Seidler Fund, yet proposals will need to specify the anticipated outcomes from the collaborative project. Description of Undergraduate Scholarly Collaboration Fellowships The proposed activity must take place over a 6-10 week period during summer The application, which should be addressed to a general audience, will come from the faculty member, who will have identified the student(s) with whom he/she will work. The faculty member should also explain in his or her application how the identified student(s) will meet the Seidler Fund criteria as specified under Evaluation of Proposals. Faculty participants must commit to support the project by directly supervising and assisting the student(s) work during the entirety of the period that the student(s) is/are working. Faculty will be paid a stipend of $500 per week. Students will receive an hourly wage at the rate of $10/hour for hours per week. If the project involves a collaboration with two students, a justification must be provided. The faculty stipend does not change if a second student is funded. To further support the project, up to $2,000 will be available for materials, supplies and/or travel by the faculty member and student to an appropriate professional conference, or to an archive, library or other site important to the research process. Travel, if requested, must take place before the end of the subsequent academic year. Both the budget and the narrative will be evaluated. For a proposal to be successful it needs to include a convincing narrative about the mutual benefits of the proposed activities and a budget in line with the fellowship criteria. Partial funding will not be awarded. The total number of projects funded will vary depending on the budget of each fellowship recipient. Note: The budget information must include any other summer pay from sources such as teaching a class, grant-funded activities, etc. Total FGCU faculty summer pay may not exceed 1 FTE (approximately 1/3 of the 9-month base pay).

2 Deadline The submission process begins January 6, 2017 and all applications must be received by 5:00 P.M., Friday, February 3, Specific submission guidelines will be available on the Seidler Undergraduate Scholarly Collaboration Fellowship website ( Evaluation of Proposals Applications will be evaluated by an elected committee representing the distribution of disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences. We are committed to ensuring that this scholarly support is widely distributed across the disciplines in the college. Selection criteria will include: Significance of the project Clear narrative explaining the benefits of the proposed collaboration Evidence of student(s) interest and commitment Qualifications of the participants relative to the proposed project Student(s) endorsement by the faculty mentor and a letter of recommendation from one additional faculty member Budget that meets the criteria delineated under Budget Guidelines (please see below) Previous Seidler Undergraduate Scholarly Collaboration Fellowships (the committee seeks to encourage new applicants) Summer commitments not to exceed 1 FTE (approximately 1/3 of the 9-month base pay) Application for Student/Faculty Undergraduate Scholarly Collaboration Fellowship Application Materials A completed proposal consists of: 1. Supporting Documentation A 2-3 page project description (in no smaller than single-spaced, 12 point font with 1- inch margin). Please do not exceed 3 pages. The description should contain clear objectives and intended outcomes, details of how the faculty and student(s) will work together, budget justification, and a detailed time frame for achieving the objectives 1-page letter from each student involved detailing their interest in the project Up to 3-page CV for faculty mentor

3 1 page CV for student For each student involved, a recommendation letter from one additional faculty member that directly addresses the student s ability to carry out the project Copy (unofficial) of student s current transcript The supporting documentation should be submitted as a single PDF with a file name of facultylastname_first initial_seidleruscf2017. Ex: smith_j_seidleruscf2017.pdf. Project Reports By September 1, 2017 all Seidler Grant recipients will submit a preliminary report describing the work and the accomplishments of the student/faculty collaborators. A final report will be due by April of the following Spring. Further information will be available post-award.
