6 Consumer & Family Sciences News New Clothing Projects Available STEAM Clothing 1: FUNdamentals: youth ages 8 to 10 will gather the tools they'll need to begin sewing, understand textiles through fun science experiments, learn beginning math and engineering techniques in clothing construction, and take their skills a step further, investigating businesses, service learning projects, and modeling. Youth will build the fundamentals for sewing and garment construction through the cyclical processes of science, engineering, and design. Youth will also use technology available to sewers and learn how math is used in clothing construction. This curriculum is a combined leader/youth guide, with pages to print off for youth to complete as part of the activity. FUNdamentals also introduces youth to the idea of a portfolio to document their work and track their progress as sewers by creating samples. This curriculum is available as a printed and digital version. STEAM Clothing 2: Simply Sewing (replaces Clothing Level 2): youth ages 10 to 12 will prepare for more advanced sewing techniques and projects, conduct more advanced textile science experiments, focus on advanced engineering techniques, add finishing touches and style to garments, and market and calculate prices of products. This curriculum is a combined leader/ youth guide, with pages to print/copy for youth to complete as part of the activities. Simply Sewing builds upon the skills learned in FUNdamentals and continues the development of the portfolio. This curriculum is available as a printed version and digital version and can be ordered at: ***You are welcome to preview (check out) the books from the Extension Office.*** 4-H + Your Designs = Omaha Fashion Week Nebraska 4-H is once again partnering with Omaha Fashion Week during their Spring Showcase. 7 Ideas for Clover College This year s fair seems far away but we are already looking to see how we can help you accomplish the projects that you plan on completing. We are working on organizing our Clover College opportunities for Please share your ideas and possible resources with us. If you saw an exhibit at the fair last summer and think that it would be a great workshop topic, we are always open to suggestions! New Extension Logo With the new year comes a new look, even for Extension. Instead of the old one with so many letters, a new logo has been developed and is now in use. It shows the connection between all the things our office is about. The N for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the clover for 4-H, and Extension bringing it all together. We hope this will be easier for the public to recognize and understand. It gives everything we do a centralized look and symbol. New Office Staff DID YOU KNOW? Hi Thurston County! I m Stacey Keys, your new 4-H Assistant/Office Manager. I have some exciting news to announce! Jennifer has had her baby! Little Kate Elizabeth was born November 17 th What a bundle of joy she is at 8lbs, 4oz, & 21in long. And since Jennifer is now out of the office, I am finally here. I am very eager to become involved with Extension and 4-H again. I was an 11 year 4-Her in Blaine County, which is part of Central Sandhills. After that I became a staff member at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey, NE and I still qualify that as my favorite place in the world. Since college I have judged at several county fairs in all districts and at the State Fair. I am currently working on getting my Master s in Youth Development through the UNL program Great Plains IDEA. I am truly enjoying my education and hope that this next step in Extension will enhance my learning all the more. I can t wait to get to know you all and join the Thurston County 4-H Family! ~Stacey When using the 4-H Clover there are guidelines. Any 4-H member or volunteer has permission to use the emblem. Anyone else needs to ask. It cannot be flipped. The stem must point to the right. The emblem must be used as a whole. And never covered. It should be kept upright. Never rotated or tilted. The only colors the clover can be are green, white, black, or metallic gold. It should never be distorted or the proportion changed. When working on a 4-H project, t-shirt, banner or anything that displays the clover, keep these rules in mind. If you have any questions about usage just ask the Extension Office or go to this link: 4-H NEWS Page 7

8 Reminder Since you will be enrolling online this year, all personal, health, and permission forms will be located and filled out on 4HOnline. One important part that you see online is the Code of Conduct. Please read through it and remember that when participating in 4-H you are a representative of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, your club, your community, your country, and your world.
