2 BSI Committee Meeting September 23, 2015, GE118, 1:00-2:30 Meeting Notes: Present: Linda Meyer, Roland Montemayor, Claudia Amador (ex-officio), Sandra Gonzalez, Leslie Takei, Celia Cruz-Johnson, Rachel Hagan Approval of May 7, 2015 Meeting Notes, No meeting notes for meeting; it was the project hearing. Approval of - was approved. Volunteer Notetaker, none Welcome New Members/Guests: R. Montemayor introduced Lezra Chenportillo, Counsellor. Fall 2015 Conference Requests: Marlo Seidel, (CATESOL Conference, $1,000) ESL- application was reviewed and voted on. Ballots were turned in to C. Cruz-Johnson. She will contact applicant. Short Term Projects Announcement- Between October-December 15, 2015-C. Cruz-Johnson will send out an inviting employees to submit applications. Timeline for Submission of Projects, Fall (The committee decided to follow a different approach this semester; please see notes below.) Discuss and Vote the Ongoing Acceptance Proposals- The committee voted and agreed to accept project proposals as an ongoing basis throughout the semester in lieu of the once per semester. Other: Reminder for the Sept 25, 2015, Habits of the Mind Mission College. R. Montemayor shared about the possible activities for Spring 2016 Welcome Week. One of them is to have a tent where ESL faculty and counselors can help students with the selection of classes. L Takei suggested having stations in LRC and Tech Bldg to assist students with Web Reg. R. Montemayor also mentioned that that college needs to be design a plan on how to assist students who will be become ineligible for the BOGG. There is a need to create a partnership with the Foundation to pay for textbooks.

4 BSI Committee Meeting Notes October 14, 2015, GE118, 1:00-2:30 Present: Claudia Amador (Ex-Officio), Veronica Harris, Rachel Hagan, Jamie Alonzo, Linda Meyer, Celia Cruz-Johnson Absent: Roland Montemayor, Duncan Graham Approval of September 23, 2015 Meeting Notes. Approval of - No additions or changes made. Volunteer Notetaker-None New Members/Guests- The committee welcomes new member, Veronica Harris, Athletics and Puente Counselor. BSI Yearly Report-The BSI yearly report was submitted. This year it was a two part report: an expenditure and the narrative and action plan report. Both were submitted electronically. Celia thanks the commitee3 member for their contributions and collaboration with the report. BSI Expenditures Report- Claudia Amador, Deanna Herrera, Marilyn Morikang, and Sandra Gonzalez verified the expenditures; they suggested that for the 2016 report closely monitor and categorize the accounts Action Plan- Committee members received a copy of the action plan and each committee member will lead different activities. Linda will lead the purchase of copies of basic skills textbook. Leslie T will lead the efforts of peer tutors that will assist students with MyWeb and Moodle. Rachel will lead Activity #5. Rachel informed the committee that SJCC doesn t have and Academic Renewal Policy and that the Academic Senate is working on it. Fall 2015 Conference Requests-Celia Stated that a couple of ESL faculty have ed informing her that they will submit application conference funding for CATESOL. Short Term Projects Announcement- Between October-December 15, None proposed. Timeline for Submission of Projects, Fall There are three projects planned for this semester. Ongoing Math Project-Jamie asked the committee to extend the math project until spring The committee approved it. Jamie shared about the September Math Retreat (part of the math project previously mentioned. The attendants met for 1.5 hours and formed 5 research groups: curriculum contextualization, acceleration, deceleration, assessment and pedagogies. Project participation includes adjunct math faculty.
5 Decision of Ongoing Acceptance Proposals- The committee decided to accepted project proposals on an ongoing basis. Proposers will be asked to meet with the committee if the committee members have questions. Other-None Meeting Dates: 10/14; 10/28; 11/11; 11/15; 12/10/15

Peiman Geibi will be here proxy. New Meeting Time- Leslie Takei has a problem attending meeting at 1 pm. The committee members present agreed to meet at 1:30 instead of 1:00. Fall 2015 Conference Requests-No applications were received prior to this meeting. Short Term (Oct-Dec 15, 2015) Projects Announcement- The committee agreed to focus on the activities listed in the BSI Plan. The Math Project will expand into the Spring 2016 semester. Board Presentation on Nov 10 th -Celia informed the committee that the presentation was postponed. President Breland will let her know the new date. Other Open Conversation among committee regarding: Partnership with CTE faculty and students- The committee members exchanged ideas about how to provide support to students in CTE courses. Possibilities: Create/provide high impact activities workshops (study skills, how to, Reading Apprenticeship, On Course) non-instruction hours (summer, intersession, weekends) Contextualized courses Remediation (reading, math, English) workshops High Impact Projects-Vice-President Montemayor suggested tohire a speaker for the BSI Committee to discuss high impact projects. Rachel and Roland will review the list of possible resources
10 that we can contact. It is beneficial for students and the college to have longer projects that have continuity. Participate in the Developmental Math Institute. Reading Jam for summer bridge students. Assessment- The school doesn t have a writing portion in the initial assessment. Rachel said other schools have a writing tool. Celia state that she is participating in the Common Assessment Workgroup. There are pilot schools; the final tool will probably be available in fall 2016 to all schools. M. Edwards had received funding for small projects on this topic, but she is out on medical leave for part of this semester. Rachel sent an asking Keiko if someone was working on this in the meantime. Next Meeting Dates are 11/25; 12/9/15. Meeting adjourned at 2:00 pm.

Cruz-Johnson was in Sacramento at a Common Assessment Workgroup meeting. Approval of agenda Meeting from the last meeting ( 11/25/2015) were not available Announcements relayed from Chair via a. Berkeley City College workshop on Dec. 4 th attended by C. Cruz, C. March, and M. Sudharna b. Topic was how to help CTE students c. Faculty are interested in piloting activities at SJCC Reading Apprenticeship-SJCC will host Reading Apprenticeship workshop during Spring 2016 Welcome Week activities for Spring (project) The Committee will fund student helpers in the LRC during the first two weeks of school to assist students with registering, logging onto Moodle, purchasing parking permits, etc. Other Spring projects a. Rachel Hagan described her proposal for a series of class visits throughout the semester. Targeted classes include: Math 111 & 311; English 335, 350 & 301. Topics to be covered: admission and registration problems, drop dates, BOG fee waiver, student support services, counseling services, educational planning, and general education requirements. Jamie mentioned that Math instructors may be reluctant to give up time in their class for the presentations since they have so much material to cover. Rachel said she will reach out to instructors to promote the Math Study Skills Workshops. The project proposal will include assessments to demonstrate positive impact of the in-class visits on student performance in targeted class and long term success and retention of student. b. Math Working Groups will be meeting to discuss potential projects such as: deceleration; STATWAY; applied math; STEM core; math jams; and contextualized math for other disciplines. Tech Training for ESL instructors will take place during Intersession. Instructors will be trained in the use of online pedagogical tools.
