Meckler FY17 Master-Apprentice Awardee The SFA Master-Apprentice Award seeks to support and encourage the preservation and perpetuation of traditional art forms present and thriving in Arizona. With the goal of strengthening the transmission of community-based traditions in the region, it fosters and supports the critical teaching/learning relationship The award supports a master artist or tradition bearer who has identified a qualified apprentice (or group of apprentices) to engage in a one-year long teaching-learning relationship that includes one-on-one mentorship and hands-on experience in a traditional artistic practice. Our highest priority is to support apprentices to learn from master artists within their own cultural traditions. The award can be used to support the master artist, offset costs of raw materials, and support any travel essential to the exchange. SFA will make nine $ 2,500 awards in the State of Arizona in Follow this link to see profiles of past awardees. Applicants include a wide variety of traditional artists, including but not limited to: Artisans: weavers, basket makers, jewelers, mask makers Occupational folklife practitioners: adobe brick makers, leather workers, ironworkers Oral tradition practitioners: storytellers, musicians, poets Performing arts practitioners: dancers, traditional garment makers, ritual object makers Support for the Master-Apprentice award program comes from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Surdna Foundation, and SFA donors. 1

2 APPLICATION PROCESS: PART I NEW Deadline for Nominations is May 11, 2018 Nomination: (this is new to our program please read carefully) Artists are first nominated by peers within their community, cultural institutions, apprentices or by self-nomination (see pp.3 for an example of the nomination form questions). Once a nomination has been made, SFA will invite nominees to apply. The nomination selection process is based on these three components; Mastery of art form. Nominees ability to describe how the mastery of this art form has been recognized by the artist s cultural community and the artist s ability to share traditional knowledge. Nominator/Master Artist fills a cultural art form or geographic area in the State of Arizona not currently being supported by SFA. Nominees will be invited to apply by SFA Staff based on the above criteria. NEW Deadline for Nominations is May 11, 2018! Follow this link to complete the nomination form (you must first create a free account on Submittable.com. This account will be your application portal, you will not have to create another account to complete a full application if you are invited to do so on May 21, Nominees must be: United States citizens, lawful permanent residents, or have permission from the U.S. Department of Immigration to work in the United States. Full-time residents of Arizona for a minimum of one full year. Master Artists must be at least 18 years of age. Apprentices must be at least 16 years of age. Recipients must remain residents of Arizona for the duration of the award year. APPLICATION PROCESS: PART II Application: Once a nomination has been approved by SFA Staff, the Master Artist & Apprentice will be invited to submit a full application. The application is submitted online via submittable.com. It is important that the master artist or apprentice have access to the internet. SFA Staff will also provide extensive virtual and in-person technical support to ensure that all applicants are able to complete a competitive application until the final application deadline of June 18,2018 2

3 A sample of questions asked are below: Describe your involvement with this art form, including how long you have been active in the art form, as well as how you learned it. (1000 words max) Describe the traditions you will teach to the apprentice, and describe what specific parts of the art form you will focus on. (1000 words max) Tell us why you think your apprentice is an appropriate fit. Have you been working with your apprentice before and if so for how long? (700 words max) Apprentices will also be asked to answer questions in the full application. A sample of apprentice questions asked are below: Describe your involvement with this art form, including how long you have been active in the art form, as well as how you learned it. (700 words max) What do you hope to learn from the Master Artist. Describe your commitment to learning this tradition. (700 words max) Describe your motivation for working with this master artist, and why you believe they are a good fit for you. (700 words max) A selection panel comprised of past awardees, local and regional cultural leaders, curators, tribal members, and scholars will review all nominee s applications for final selection. This is a competitive process. Master artists will be awarded for their knowledge, dedication, and commitment to passing on living traditions from our region and beyond. NEW! Nominees who are not selected will be automatically entered into the pool of nominees for the next year s competitive process. SFA will make 9 awards to Master-Artists of $ 2,500 each this year. Apprentices will receive $ 500 each to support the learning exchange between master-artist and apprentice. ORIENTATION: SFA Staff will host in-person orientations in communities upon request.
