1 Judith Basin County 4-H News February 2016 Dates & Deadlines Fergus County Small Animal Workshop Feb. 6th (Registration Deadline Feb. 4th ) Fair Book Cover Contest Open to all 4-H members! Here is your opportunity to unleash your creativity. A $40 gift certificate to North Forty will be awarded to the winner of the Fair Book Cover Contest. Contest Rules: Due to the Extension Office by Friday, March 18th (judithbasin@montana.edu) Picture Resolution needs to be as high as possible Picture may be in color or black & white. No panoramic pictures Pictures may include people, but should not be the primary subject Member must take the photo The following four elements must be added to the picture: 1.) Judith Basin County Fair, 2016, August 11-13, and Stanford, MT JB County 4-H Small Animal Clinic The JB County 4-H will be hosting a small animal clinic March 20th. The clinic will take place in the Stanford Archery club building. 2 District and Local 4-H News Quality Assurance Training It s time for Quality Assurance classes once again! This class is required once as a Junior member and again as a Senior member for all enrolled in animal projects. This training covers best production practices related to animal care, nutrition, and handling that 4-H members should be utilizing when raising their animals. This training is required by Montana 4-H in order to ensure that 4-H members are producing the best quality animals possible. Training includes group discussions and hands-on activities. This year s training has been scheduled for Sunday, February 14th from 1-3 p.m. at the City Hall in Stanford. *Correction the January newsletter incorrectly stated February 13th. A parent or guardian MUST attend the training with the 4-H member. NO EXCEPTIONS. If a parent or guardian is not present at the training, the child will not be eligible to exhibit or sell their animals at the Fair. Please contact the Extension Office if you have any questions. After School Program The Judith Basin County Extension office will be offering once a month, after school programs for ALL local students (grades k-6). February: The month of mushy love, come learn about the real human heart! March: BUGS, BUGS and more BUGS!!! April: Help Spring take root! Come learn about plants and gardens. May: Light Up the Summer! Learn about electricity! Exact program date to be determined, Tentatively, dates will be scheduled for the third week of each month. We will publicize the official date through , JB County Extension Website and our Facebook page. Fergus County Small Animal Winter Workshop Date: Saturday, February 6, 2016 Time: 9:00 AM Place: Lewistown Armory RSVP with the Fergus County Extension office by Thursday, Feb. 4th - call This workshop is for all members in Poultry, Rabbit, Dog, Pocket Pet and Cat. Activities will include working in workbooks to help you get the required activities done and help you get started with your record forms. You will also get tips to start practicing with your animals along with fitting, feeds, and nutrition. Please RSVP, so they can be prepared with supplies. Stanford Scramblers February Meeting will be moved to Feb. (due to a basketball game) Junior Leaders/Ambassador Meeting February 21st 1 JB Co. Courthouse Livestock Project Day Cascade County February 6, am 12pm The Livestock Project Day will focus on animal selection and individual species nutrition. Fitting and Showing Clinic April 2, 2016 University of Idaho s Block and Bridle Club Fitting and Showing Clinic: The cost of attendance ($25) will ensure everybody lunch and a 2016 clinic ball cap, as well as cover registration fees! Registration forms still to come. Russell Country Classic Jackpot Show Save the Date! The Russell Country Classic Jackpot Show will be June 4th. More information to follow. State 4-H News 2016 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest Essay Topic: Bees and Pollination. How Important is it? Deadline for state submissions is Friday, February 19th Please or mail entries to Todd Kesner at the State 4-H Office tkesner@montana.edu Taylor Hall, PO Box , Bozeman MT REC LAB The 2016 REC lab is April 8-10 in Joliet, Montana. This year s theme is Reach For The Stars In 4-H! The world today consists of many people society consider as stars. All these men and women had to undergo some hardships and joys to get where they are today. 4-Hers will reach for the stars of leadership and social skills and embrace the bright ideas to take back and share with their clubs and even gain new project ideas for fair. Grab a star in hidden places and receive added knowledge and prizes. They will all have their turn to walk down the red carpet and enter the Dancing with the Stars dance on Saturday night. Participants are years old. Registration cost is $80 and includes, lodging, meals, workshop fees and a t- shirt. The 4-H council will generously cover the fees for JB County members. Rec Lab registration forms are enclosed, available in the office and/or on our website. Montana 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Montana 4-H Foundation supports 4-H initiatives that focus on healthy living, citizenship, leadership, science, engineering and technology, to name a few. The mission of the Montana 4-H Foundation is to help 4-H youth by raising private funds, managing financial resources and partnering with the MSU Extension Service to fund educational opportunities for Montana 4- H youth, volunteer leaders and staff. Scholarships and grants provide opportunities for youth to strengthen their skills and maximize their positive impacts on the communities in which they live. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 1st. Please visit for individual scholarship information. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES It s time for high school seniors to start applying for scholarships. MSU-Bozeman announces the Montana Premier Scholarship Program for fall Hundreds of academic scholarship will be available to new freshmen from Montana who demonstrate academic promise based on ACT and/or SAT scores and grade point average. Leadership experience, activities, honors and financial need may also be considered. Students must apply for admission application/ and complete the scholarship application at Priority deadline is February 1, Applications for the State 4-H Foundation and other scholarships can be found on the state 4-H website at #programs:30 The site has detailed requirements and deadlines.

4 LOANS AVAILABLE The Farm Service Agency (FSA) provides financial assistance and business planning to help rural youth get a start on their futures. The Rural Youth Loan Program is designed to provide start-up funds to establish and operate income-producing projects of modest size in connection with participation in 4-H clubs, FFA and similar agriculturally focused organizations. Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development Citizenship Programs WESTERN REGIONAL LEADERS FORUM IN ALASKA The Western Regional Leaders Forum (WRLF) will be held in Fairbanks, AK on March 2-4, 2016! They're gearing up and getting ready. One thing is for sure: Northern delights are guaranteed! WRLF is an exciting - time to network with peers from across the region sharing ideas and building relationships to carry 4 H into the future. A list of workshops, events and tour descriptions can be found on their website at Early bird registration began November 1. April 1, 2016 Applications to host international students are due. Go to host-families/ for more information and to complete an application. April 30, 2016 Applications for CWF Inauguration trip are due CWF Inauguration is a SPECIAL trip for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration ceremony. Delegates must be years old and able to travel to Washington, D.C. from January 17-21, 2017 (possible travel on 1/16/17). Delegates stay at the National 4-H Conference Center. Registration is limited to the first 250 people on a national level. Montana has reserved 20 spots (18 youth, 2 adult chaperones). More information for all the above citizenship programs is available on the montana4h.org website. NATIONAL YOUTH SUMMIT SERIES National 4-H is sponsoring annual summits in the areas of healthy living, agri-science and makers (innovators, engineers). These summits are an opportunity for a small group of high school students to work with youth from many different organizations (schools, scouts, 4-H, etc.) to identify issues related to the above topics and to create action plans for their communities. They meet with and learn from national experts in the various fields then devise plans to bring home. The next Agri-Science Summit is coming up in January, For more information on any of the summits, go to 4-H Records By now you should have completed your goals for each of your project journals and on your My 4-H Year record. Below are some overall goals you should review now so your leader will be able to check yes on each of them when you turn your records in at the end of the year. Enroll in and complete at least one project. Set at least 3 goals to accomplish during the 4-H year. Complete the My 4-H year journal form. Keep your journals up t date with the things you do throughout the year. Participate in at least 3 activities such as judging, demonstrations, public speaking, tours, reports at club meetings, etc. and record them in My 4-H Year. List any awards and honors your receive. Complete the Projects and Financial Journal each for each project. If you own an animal, keep records for it and complete the appropriate parts of Animal Records. This will vary according to the animal you have.
