2 About ANZ Trustees ANZ Trustees offers charitable foundation, estate planning and administration, private client and investment management services We manage a large number of charitable trusts and foundations, either as sole trustee or with a co-trustee structure In 2009 approximately $69 million was generated for distribution by charitable trusts and foundations The majority of distributions (grants) are discretionary, approximately 20% are non-discretionary 2

3 Granting at ANZ Trustees The charitable trusts and foundations managed by ANZ Trustees focus on a wide variety of issues and interests Larger trusts and foundations have unique guidelines We manage more than 40 general granting programs We manage six medical funding programs Visit to review the guidelines for specific trusts, foundations and programs to determine if a trust or foundation managed by ANZ Trustees grants in a particular area 3

5 Medical Research Grants We consider that philanthropy plays a special role in supporting medical research and have developed models that support medical research in targeted ways to: Assist capacity building for medical research organisations in Australia Assist talented researchers to build careers in Australia Support students that have demonstrated research excellence Acknowledge excellence 5

6 Medical Granting Programs Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation Medical Program Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowships (5 years) Fellowships for researchers with recognised postdoctoral achievements who are seeking to establish research careers in Australia and undertake research in an Australian academic institution Value $975,000 per fellowship (over 5 years) At least 10 fellows are supported at any given time 27 Fellowships have been awarded since the program inception in 1995 Clinical Investigatorships (1 year) Funding for clinical medical research by graduates who have completed both their clinical and research medical training and are at doctoral level and commencing their first career position Value $60,000 per investigator 5 are awarded each year 95 Clinical Investigatorships awarded since program inception 1995 Since 1995 more than 120 recipients have been supported by the Viertel Charitable Foundation Medical Program 6

7 Medical Granting Programs The Judith Jane Mason & Harold Stannett Williams Memorial Foundation (established 2003) To achieve enduring positive impact in the areas of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer s Disease through funding medical research principally into the causes, prevention and/or management of these diseases Grant selection by the ANZ Trustees National Medical Advisory Panel Distributes up to $1 million each year The Wicking Trust* Research into more effective diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, care or treatment of Alzheimer s Disease Research into cures for Alzheimer's Disease Preference to support emerging research concepts and young investigators, particularly women returning to research Grant selection by the ANZ Trustees National Medical Advisory Panel Distributes up to $200,000 each year in this program Specialist medical research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer s Disease *The Wicking Trust Distributes $4.9 million total annually 7

8 Medical Granting Programs Medical Research and Technology in Victoria (since 1992) An annual program that funds equipment to support clinical and biomedical research, including cancer and cardiovascular research Applications are selected by a specialist advisory panel on the basis of quality of scientific research proposal. Up to $30,000 per grant Distributes approximately $500,000 each year ANZ Trustees Medical Research in Queensland and ANZ Trustees Children s Medical Research in Queensland An annual program that funds medical research in Queensland PhD scholarships for paediatric medical research, cancer, heart and other areas of medical research for up to 3 years Two clinical establishment grants for new researchers are also awarded each year Distributes approximately $350,000 each year Medical Research Equipment (Victoria) Medical Research in Queensland 8

9 Environmental Research Grants Holsworth Wildlife Research Endowment Funding support for post-graduate student research in ecology, wildlife management and natural history studies Field work on Australian native plants and animals to gain understanding of ecological interactions, population dynamics, animal behaviour, and species distribution. Conservation biology and biodiversity studies relating to the management of protected areas and rare or threatened species in Australia Wildlife management relating to sport hunting, harvesting, pest control, management of non-game animals, and effect of land management on native species. Preference given to students at an early stage of a Masters or Doctoral program. Individual grants up to $7,500 per year (for periods of one to three years) Distributes up to $500,000 each year The Holsworth Wildlife Research Foundation has provided support to 340 recipients since

12 Heart Research Centre (Melbourne) Addressing the Disadvantage in Aboriginal Heart Health Research successful models of Cardiac Rehabilitation for Aboriginal people Develop a localised model of care in Victoria $25,000 grant Funding provided by the Alfred Felton Bequest Project strengths Leadership - HRC specializes in cardiovascular health including implementation. The project officer is an Aboriginal woman with extensive experience in model development and implementation in the field of Aboriginal chronic healthcare Budget: $59,400 with contribution of $34.4k by HRC Develop a localised CR model working with VACCHO and Victorian ACCHOs Disseminate models of care in partnership with VACCHO and GP Victoria Implement localised models of CR care at two Victorian ACCHOs 12

13 Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society La Trobe University Writing Themselves in Again Initial $180,000 two-year grant to ARCSHS to develop Beyond Homophobia policy blueprint to reduce health inequalities experienced by gay and lesbian young people across Victoria Subsequent $244,000 grant to ARCSHS to coordinate implementation by Government at statewide level Funding provide by the William Buckland Foundation Project strengths Leadership ARCSHS in coordinating role working with key Government partners Partnership with: - Office for Youth - Dept of Education and Early Childhood Development - Gay and Lesbian health Victoria (DHS) - Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission - Victorian Police Project budget: $1.4 million cash and in-kind contributions from partner organisations, in addition to philanthropic support for ARCSHS Philanthropic funding permits ARCSHS to retain autonomy relative to Government partners 13
