3 The Corporation of the Town of Mississippi Mills MUNICIPAL DRUG STRATEGY COMMITTEE MINUTES A meeting of the Municipal Drug Strategy Committee for the Corporation of the Town of Mississippi Mills was held on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Town Municipal Offices. PRESENT: Committee: Staff: Others: Jeff Mills, Chairperson (arrived at 6:24 p.m.) Carolyn Klickermann Tammy Welk Anne Colterman Alyssa Comstock Diane Smithson, CAO, Recording Secretary ABSENT: Committee: Staff: Jane Torrance, with regrets Jennifer Barr, with regrets In the absence of the Chairperson, Carolyn Klickermann called the meeting to order at 6:13 p.m. A. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Moved by Tammy Welk Seconded by Anne Colterman THAT the agenda be accepted as presented. CARRIED B. DISCLOSURE OF PECUNIARY INTEREST were declared. C. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING(S) Moved by Anne Colterman Seconded by Tammy Welk THAT the minutes of the Municipal Drug Strategy Committee meeting held on Monday, June 24, 2013 be approved as circulated and read. 4 Municipal Drug Strategy Committee Minutes September 23, 2013 Page 2 D. DELEGATIONS E. BUSINESS ARISING OUT OF MINUTES 1. Tasks related to Joint Choices Fair with ADHS: Preparation of a guest list of local service providers for youth and an invitation to these service providers Develop a quiz that the youth can complete while they attend each table Prize for winner of quiz? Discuss any other logistics issues for the event Barb Lotan will work on confirming a date December 5, 2013 The members discussed issued related to the Joint Choices Fair scheduled for December 5, 2013 in the foyer and mezzanine of the High School. A list of service providers to youth in our community along with an invitation to the event will be prepared by Alyssa. She will circulate the drafts to the members for their review and comments. The members discussed arranging for prizes that could be used as draw prizes for youth who complete a quiz about each of the different service providers who have set up a table at the fair. Diane is to confirm what gift certificates she still has available that could be used as prizes. Other members will see if they can arrange for any other prizes. Barb Lotan will require assistance for the event if any member is interested in helping out. Tammy advised the members about the Challenge My Drive event that will be held the week of October 21-25, The event is being sponsored by State Farm. Different events will be held every day between 10 am and 1 pm. 2. Discuss projects to work on for the fiscal year The members discussed projects to work on for the fiscal year. The following suggestions were made: Training program for how to cycle safely. Cycling can lead to better mental health. We may be able to get funding for this program through mental health initiatives. It was noted that Clara Hughes will be cycling across Canada in 2014 to provide mental health. This is a program that could potentially receive assistance by the Rusty Spokes and/or RIM Seniors group through a Train the Trainer program. Jeff agreed to approach Faye Devlin / Suzanne Rivard about writing a grant application in support of this initiative. Work with Barb Lotan at the Almonte and District High School regarding providing education about safe partying for youth Arrange for mental health talks through the Royal Ottawa Outreach Program. This could perhaps be done during Mental Health Week. Anne agreed to look into this on behalf of the Committee Assistance with Health Fair noted in Item 1 above

Availability of resources at Mississippi Mills Public Library No new requests for additional resources were made at this time. 4. Follow up on Facebook / website presence Nothing further to report at this time. 5. Update on any other task list items The members reviewed and updated items on the task list. F. BUSINESS 1. The members agreed that a request should be made for the Committee to have a $1,000 budget in 2014 to assist with its projects without having to approach other outside groups to assist with the work of this Town Committee. G. MEETING ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. The next meeting of the Mississippi Mills Municipal Drug Strategy Committee Monday, October 28, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. 2. The next Municipal Drug Strategy Committee Network Day October 25, 2013 Carolyn was asked to inquire about whether the Network Days can be videotaped and put on our website. Potentially, High School students could be used to assist with this. H. ADJOURNMENT Moved by Carolyn Klickermann Seconded by Alyssa Comstock THAT the meeting be adjourned. 6 MUNICIPAL DRUG STRATEGY COMMITTEE TASK LIST # TO DATE STATUS/COMPLETION DATE 1 Monthly Ad in Newspaper Jennifer Barr 2 Alyssa will connect with youth at TYPS Almonte's Youth Centre to recruit a new youth member. 3 Assist in facilitating the introduction of an Early Intervention program at ADHS. Alyssa Comstock Jane Torrance/ Tammy Welk Mar 26/12 Jennifer has agreed to continue writing commencing in January. Carolyn will follow up with Jennifer regarding a newspaper article for September. A potential topic is "Contracting with Youth". The TYPS Co-op Student could work with Jennifer on the monthly write-ups Oct 15/12 Alyssa will report at the next meeting when she is in attendance. Jacob Joron left for college. Alyssa will try to get someone to attend. Oct 15/12 Jane contacted Laurie McCabe who agreed that she would be happy to host this program at ADHS. She also contacted Mike Souillier about putting on the session at ADHS but has not heard back from him yet. ADHS does have videoconferencing capability. Tammy Welk will has Barb Lotan / Ron Ferguson at ADHS to contact Mr. Souillier directly about putting on the program. The High School does not have space available to host this type of session. Tammy agreed to facilitate a meeting between Ron Ferguson, Vice Principal at ADHS and Kevin Fisher, Principal of Maple Grove School in Lanark Village to share information on how the program is working at Maple Grove school. Barb Lotan advised on June 24, 2013 that this item is being considered for the fall of 2013 as a project for ADHS 4 Home-based Drug Tests for Families Jane/Caroly n/anne Feb 25/13 To be raised at the next Network meeting. Anne Colterman confirmed that Rand has a supply of these kits 1 Updated 10/22/2013
7 MUNICIPAL DRUG STRATEGY COMMITTEE TASK LIST # TO DATE STATUS/COMPLETION DATE 5 Teen Mental Health/Addictions Fair Tammy Welk Feb 25/13 Committee to brainstorm further on the event planned for the fall in a World Café format. Someone will approach Skills Link. Tammy to approach the high school after further discussion at the April meeting. Barb Lotan will be attending our June meeting to discuss logistics. Consider bringing in tools from MTO for use on the day of the Addictions Fair. The date has been set as December 5, Alyssa will work on a service providers list as well as an invitation. Members will follow up on potential prizes 6 Town Website Staff Feb 25/13 Staff to create a page and post information on the Four Pillars and the Committee.
