The Ten Years Time Grant Givers' Programme
Participant Feedback It's helped me a lot to not get bogged down in the day-to-day and think more about what being a better funder looks like, and how to actually do it. Course Participant, Spring 2016 It was very hard for me to pick favourite sessions as I found them all very useful and interesting in different ways. The mix of topics, content and speakers worked really well Thank you - and Claire - very much for a fantastic experience which I hope will continue. Great cohort and programme Course Participant, Spring 2016 The programme has been really helpful in enabling me to access a range of very different peers, most of whom I would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with. The great thing about this was that there was no need for ego or pretence which I really valued. Course Participant, Spring 2016
What It Is There are relatively few opportunities for people working in grant giving to take a step back from their day jobs and spend time thinking through what more we can do as a sector. This programme gives participants an opportunity to discuss and reflect with peers, and to see how they can think more about what they can achieve within their current roles. The Programme is designed for people working in or sitting on the boards of trusts and foundations who have a direct grant giving responsibility and less than five years experience of grant-making (or for those with more experience but an appetite to challenge their current thinking). The idea of the programme is to help participants step away from the every day work of analysing applications or managing grantee relationships and think about the best ways in which philanthropy can be used to advance social change. The programme takes place over eight to nine sessions, lasting a total of 27 hours over 4 months. It happens in cohorts of 8 10 participants with six to seven speaker sessions and two half day workshops. On top of the core content, every participant is supported through coaching from a leading independent coach, organised through the programme. The programme is designed to neither invade too much on personal or professional time, with a mixture of breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The next cohort launches in January 2018 and the first four programmes have sold out in advance of starting.
Track Record 100% of participants would recommend the programme. 100% wanted to continue engaging after the programme. 90% attendance per session, 100% course completion. Net promoter score: 71%. Participants Have Attended From The Following Organisations:
The Programme Ten Years Time is a philanthropy education firm that runs a challenging professional development programme for people working in grant-giving. The programme is tailored for those with typically less than five years experience in their role whether they are recent career changers or younger staff members or indeed trustees. Using philanthropic capital to create social change is a skill. It is hard work that, when done well, can lead to fantastic social change. There are, however, few professional development opportunities or leadership programmes for staff in the space. Ten Years Time launched the Grant Givers Programme to offer a chance to challenge conventional grant-giving wisdom and to understand how social change happens. We hope to give insight on what philanthropy s role can be in this and to highlight the best practice of the country s top grant-givers whether they be foundations or private individuals. The purpose will not be to critique individual foundations or for members to reflect publicly on their own portfolios and approaches but to create robust and exciting debate. Ten Years Time will run the programme as a cohort based initiative, inviting individuals to join 8 sessions over a 4 month period. Most will be dinners or breakfasts. The next cohort is starting in January we are taking bookings for this programme, on a first come, first served basis. The programme will cost 1250+VAT for family foundations and larger foundations. It will cost 850+VAT for smaller foundations. We are also providing two fully-funded scholarship places for those not already working in the sector. To enquire about joining, please jake@tenyearstime.com. Jake Hayman, Course Director Recognised as one of London s Most Influential for his work in philanthropy, Jake is the CEO of philanthropy education firm, Ten Years Time, an e-tutor for Cambridge University s corporate philanthropy programme and a Spear s 500 recommended advisor. He is a regular commentator on issues of philanthropy and writes for Forbes on the subject. Jake sits on the boards of the Early Intervention Foundation and Lankelly Chase Foundation having previously founded charities Future First & Future First Global. He is a former poker player and failed entrepreneur who survived BBC Dragon s Den, turning down an offer from everyone s favourite Dragon, Peter Jones.
Participants should leave with A better understanding of how money can be used to support social change A support network of fellow professionals Some new skills and ideas to bring to their roles Some thoughts on how to overcome particular challenges in their grant giving Exposure to new ideas on foundation management and grant giving strategies I definitely feel a) I m learning new things about the sector, b) I have some interesting thoughts and approaches in mind to look out for when looking at new or existing organisations in our portfolio, c) I have some good examples and arguments to bring to my job when hoping to support new organisations or new idea. Course Participant, Spring 2016 I feel more part of a grant making ecosystem as a result, rather than just an employee of my own organisation. It was valuable as a relatively junior member of the organisation to have the validation and space to talk about issues, concerns, ideas and strategic stuff that is often seen as the preserve of others. Course Participant, Spring 2016
Spring 2016 Schedule (Provided As A Guide) Session 1 User Voices in Grant-Making With Darren Murinas Darren is a trustee of grant-making charity Lankelly Chase Foundation and the Vice Chair of Stoke Expert Citizens. He has lived experience of severe and multiple disadvantage and has spent time in prison, and suffered problems with addiction. He is now a public speaker, blogger, filmmaker and multiple needs activist. Session 2 Financing Insight Speakers: Roshan Kumar and Helen Saddler Roshan is a 17 year old Londoner with insight into a broken system for disabled students in the UK and has researched models for how they can be changed. He is trying to turn insight and ideas into action. Helen is the Director and Founder of Inclusive Classrooms, a social enterprise working to support teaching assistants in UK schools. Alongside launching the organisation in 2015, Helen has just completed her PhD studying the role of TAs in the classroom and also works at Greater London Authority, as a Senior Policy and Projects Officer. Session 3 The Flawed Market of Impact Measurement With Tris Lumley Tris is the Director of Development New Philanthropy Capital where he leads on the development of new strategies, partnerships and initiatives to help transform the social sector. Working with partners in the UK and internationally, Tris focuses on both the demand and supply sides of innovation around social impact. His particular interest areas are leadership and culture, as well as frameworks and approaches that put impact at the heart of the social sector, including shared measurement, open data and systems thinking.
Spring 2016 Schedule (Provided As A Guide) Session 4 Why International Development Funders Codified Good Practice With Jo Wells Jo is the Director of the Blagrave Trust, a grant-making trust which aims to support young people to access the opportunities and gain the skills they need in order to lead fulfilled lives and meet their potential. She was previously Humanitarian Policy Manager at HelpAge International and Emergency Programme Officer at CAFOD. She will be discussing the values of a Code of Conduct to philanthropic foundations based on international experience. Session 5 Funding Movements Over Programmes With Ruth Ibegbuna Ruth is the founder of Reclaim, an organisation working to tackle the UK s low rates of social mobility. RECLAIM is building a new strand of working-class youth leadership with the mission of being seen, being heard and leading change, coming out of the most marginalized areas in regional cities with a powerful influence on politics, the media, and mindsets locally and nation-wide. Session 6 Is Social Investment Flawed as a Social Change Tool? Vinay Nair & Annika Small Annika is the former Director of the Nominet Trust, now founder of the Centre for the Advancement of Social Tech. Vinay is the Head of Business Development at Social and Sustainable Capital having left the world of mainstream finance. Session 7 Funding Systems Change With Julian Corner Julian Corner is Chief Executive of Lankelly Chase, a grant-making foundation focused on people facing severe and multiple disadvantage at the extreme margins of society. Lankelly Chase are at the forefront of demonstrating the role the foundations can play in disrupting the dynamics that create entrenched systemic failure. Session 8 Building the Perfect Foundation With Ben Metz This will be a facilitated session where the group work as a team to design a new foundation from scratch.
Come Join Us To enquire about whether the programme might work for you, contact Jake Hayman on We advise speaking to a previous cohort participant before you register, if you would like an intro to one, just let us know. It s a lot of fun and designed for people who want to stretch themselves and the sector to do more than we are doing. We re looking for participants with humility who are happy to challenge the status quo of how things are done already, that s really all we ask. We are not running the programme to make money, if we have 20 fantastic participants none of whom have employers willing to pay, then we will cover all costs. If we have any surplus from the programme will go towards charitable donations, philanthropy research or future cohorts. Contact Jake Hayman: Jake@tenyearstime.com or for more info.
