1 TECHNOLOchicas Programming Grant Phase I APPLICATION RESPONSE DEADLINE: January 31, :00pm ET LULAC and Televisa Foundation are proud to announce that the 2016 Empower Hispanic America with Technology initiative is accepting grant proposals. The focus of this initiative is to create positive change from within Hispanic communities by providing Computer Science, more specifically coding, program design and robotics education to young girls in middle school. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that IT will be one of the fastest- growing sectors of the U.S. economy, adding nearly 1.4 million job openings by Moreover, it is vital to introduce Latinas into Computer Science education so that they have the technological skills and knowledge necessary to compete in academic settings, job markets, and in activities that call for an ever-increasing reliance on technology. LULAC and Televisa firmly believe that by empowering students with the technological skills they require we can close the education and economic gaps which are all too prevalent in our communities. Computer Science related student services are key to closing these gaps as they help improve high school STEM achievement among Hispanic youth. STEM education will provide Hispanic youth with a higher chance of exceling in the workforce as a professional. LULAC and Televisa will be providing a total of 15 grants across the United States. Seven (7) cities will be awarded during phase I and eight (8) sites will be awarded during phase II. 2 Key Grant Criteria Program Requirements Reporting Requirements Grantees must participate in a mandatory orientation via webinar. Submit and implement proposed budget. Provide an 8 to 12-week Computer Science education and awareness program. Submit program reportstemplates provided by LULAC. Serve a cohort of 22 Latina middle school girls throughout the program. Provide a total of at least 25 hours of programming. Submit pictures. Submit clippings of media coverage gained. Host Parent program orientation about program. Use the TECHNOLOchicas provided curriculum. Pitch program to local media to secure television, radio, online, or print coverage. Background Information About LULAC and the Empower Hispanic America with Technology Initiative LULAC created the Empower Hispanic America with Technology initiative which aims to empower the Latino community by increasing access to and utilization of key telecommunication technologies which have been historically been out of reach for many Hispanic Americans. Since the beginning of EHAT, LULAC has sought to establish new and enhance existing community technology centers in locations that serve low-income Hispanic communities. In addition, the initiative has helped expand the LULAC s web site to become a portal for the Hispanic community to gain access to information, programs, and resources for education, employment, technology, housing, health, civil rights and civic engagement including voter registration. LULAC s Empower Hispanic America with Technology initiative has established the nation s largest Latino network of community technology centers. Since 2004, over 66 technology centers, have been launched and housed under LULAC and affiliate community based nonprofit organizations. Each year thousands of people are provided free educational workshops, employment training, and STEM education to local Latino communities across the United States. Together our community technology centers and sponsors bridge the digital divide and provide the Hispanic community with an invaluable resource to the advancement of this fast growing population access to technology and content reflecting their interests and needs. To date, EHAT has helped over 1.6 million underserved Latinos advance their education, careers, and quality of life.
3 Snapshot of STEM in the Latino Community Latinos continue to trail in STEM: Although high school dropout rates have lowered over the past years among Latinos, Latinos still continue to have the highest dropout rate compared to Black, White, and Asian high school students. Less than one in 10 Hispanics have completed college. The proportion of Latinos in STEM careers is not reflective of the overall U.S. population. Although Latino youth have significantly grown to become 20% of all youth in our country, less than 2% of the STEM workforce is composed of Latinos. Therefore, there is not only a lack of representation but a lack of role models that can inspire youth to pursue a field that is both challenging but rewarding and sees a vast economic growth. STEM jobs are predicted to grow 62% in the next decade. Given these numbers, Latinos are still less likely to pursue a degree in the STEM field. Applicant Qualifications Stipends of $5,000 will be awarded to councils that meet the criteria outlined below. Be a 501(c) (3) tax exemption organization status in good standing. Provide the physical space to host student program. Must have trained staff onsite. Be willing to work with LULAC National and Televisa for marketing and outreach activities. Provide timely program and financial reporting. Participate in conference calls and other meetings as requested. Proposal Submission The Grant Proposal should be a maximum of 4 typed pages (single spaced ok) including the cover page. You can save this packet once completing the fields and to CSandoval@LULAC.org no later than 5:00pm EST on January 31, Reviewing, Funding, and Notification Process All qualified request forms will be considered by a review panel and evaluated on the criteria outlined on the following pages. Final decisions on awardees will be announced by Friday, February 10, 2017.
