The Learning Web, one of the first apprenticeship programs in the country, provides Tompkins County youth with hands-on learning opportunities. Since 1972, the Web has worked with over 10,000 young people, helping them to explore career and leisure interests as diverse as marine biology, dentistry, engineering, tile making, exotic animal care, meteorology, banking and welding. 40 COMMUNITY, CAREER EXPLORATION AND APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Middle and high school youth participate in: Career exploration activities including tours and job shadowing. Youth tour various work places, meeting and talking to people working in a field of interest to them. Apprenticeships with community work-site mentors. Youth apprentices gain practical experience that helps clarify potential career choices, develop general work skills, and increase their familiarity with adult roles and responsibilities. Apprenticeships occur after school or on the weekends, under the one-to-one guidance of an adult mentor. Economically disadvantaged youth and at-risk youth may be eligible for a paid apprenticeship and small group workshops designed to support their apprenticeship Community service activities for small groups of youth to explore their community, discovering its strengths and needs. The group identifies specific needs to be addressed, and with staff assistance, plan and implement projects that benefit the community. Participants increase their leadership, planning, and communication skills while providing needed services. EXPANDING HORIZONS OPENING DOORS YOUTH OUTREACH PROGRAM Helping people ages live independently Youth Outreach assists homeless and transient youth and young adults to move from a state of dependency to self-sufficiency. Unlike many programs, YO does not offer a pre-determined package of services to participants. Instead, it guides each participant in the decision-making process about what services are needed in order to reach each youth s personal goals. Combining experiential learning, case management, life skills training (using the vehicles of housing, employment, education, home keeping, managing finances, and virtually all of the components of independent living), and a supported housing program, youth gain the skills to live successful and economically self-sufficient adult lives. Our services, especially our life skills training, apprenticeships and Housing Scholarship Program offer homeless youth a huge leg up it is a powerful combination allowing youth to focus their energies on setting goals, working on education and employment, and moving towards self-sufficiency. APPRENTICES ARE ABLE TO EXPLORE A VARIETY OF FIELDS INCLUDING: Medicine Veterinary Science Fashion Design Physics Business Art Welding Economics TV/Radio Politics Psychology and much more! My apprenticeship made me realize that this is what I actually want to do with my life. It was fun and the people helped me a lot they were nice. -Tara, program participant
