5 When did we start sending people to classes to work in a nonprofit?

6 Academic milestones related to the nonprofit sector 1971, precursor to what would become the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) 1978, Yale creates the Program on Nonprofit Organizations (PONPO) 1980, Independent Sector created from the practitioner movement, attempting to bridge the academic and practitioner communities

7 Do we really need a degree to help people?

8 The ongoing professionalization of the sector s, nonprofit academic programs around the country begin to emerge 1990 s, start seeing more fields require degrees as opposed to services being delivered by practitioners who had been there Since 1996, the number of graduate courses in nonprofit management in the U.S. has increased by 25%

9 But, where should these programs live?

10 Typical Academic Homes Over 50%, Schools of Public Policy Around 25%, Schools of Social Work About 15%, Schools of Business Remaining 10%, Interdisciplinary

20 Differences Rural vs urban communities o May be greater need in rural communities for education through professional development vs degree programs Small vs large organizations o Small organizations may be less likely to attract graduates of degree program, especially graduate degree programs
