Friday the 15th December was the annual Finance Christmas Get-Together and this year it was extra special as we were taking part in Christmas Jumper Day to help raise money for MFT Charities. Adrian Roberts (Executive Director of Finance) joined us to thank everyone for their hard work throughout the year, there was a raffle, Christmas tunes, quizzes and a yummy buffet courtesy of the Senior Managers. A special thank you goes to Sharon & Caroline for arranging the event where a brilliant 187 was raised. Merry Christmas everybody and a Happy New Year!

2 Directors Message Welcome to this Christmas Newsletter and thanks once again to Stephen for bringing it together. It's been a tremendous 12 months and with the creation of the new Department followed by the new Trust it's been a real 'roller coaster' at times. The work you have all undertaken has enabled us to both provide service continuity whilst making real improvements in how we operate. Our savings delivery has been exceptional and our customer services continue to be highly valued is going to be immensely challenging not least as we implement a new Integra ledger for MFT. Our 'Integrate Project' will challenge us all to achieve against really ambitious timescales though I am confident we will once again meet the expectations of our Trust. Thank you for all your support and enjoy Christmas. Best wishes for News Future Leaders Mark Stevens (Deputy Head of P2P) and Ross Palmer (Senior Purchasing Manager) graduated from the two year Future Leaders programme on 23rd November The graduation day included a 10 minute presentation from each delegate on how they have applied what they learnt from the programme into their workplace and how this has this benefitted patient care. The programme covered a wide range of areas including: Leading Change, Collaboration, Conflict Resolution, Accountability, Media Skills and Business Skills. Delegates were also given the chance for 1 to 1 coaching sessions throughout the programme which most if not all found invaluable. Action learning sets of 5/6 delegates were also formed and some will carry on in the future. Ross said: It s fair to say we all learned a lot, theoretically and about ourselves, as well as establishing new working relationships with people from other disciplines and geographical areas, including procurement colleagues working in the Welsh system. Colleagues from Cardiff visited MFT in August and Mark & I visited Companies House in Cardiff in early November - both really useful visits. It was great to be given the chance to apply and consequently be selected for the programme so thanks to those who nominated us.

3 HCSA Awards 2017 The HCSA (Health Care Supply Association) Awards took place on Thursday 30th November 2017 at the Harrogate Convention Centre. The HCSA promotes the work of NHS procurement and supply chain staff by providing training events, educational seminars and an annual conference. The annual awards is a prestigious night of glitz and glamour and a real who s who of NHS Procurement saw it s biggest awards yet with more nomination submissions than ever before. It was a great night for MFT with Martin Doherty (Buyer) winning the award for the Highest Academic Score on the recent HCSA Procurement Development Programme. Well done Martin! Simon Walsh (Procurement Director) was the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Services to the HCSA, much to his surprise as he wasn t aware he had been nominated. Simon accepted his award to a standing ovation from the packed audience of procurement peers. This is what Simon had to say: The HCSA Award was very humbling and an immense honour for me. I have had a fantastic 30 year career in NHS Procurement and have been fortunate to work with great colleagues including latterly at MFT. The HCSA has been a tremendous support and I have been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve in various capacities. I look forward to the next 10 years! Congratulations Simon well deserved!

4 Sustainability as Development in Manchester offered to employ survivors, providing a salary, responsibility and enabling survivors to take control of their lives. Linda Bailey (Deputy Director of Purchasing) and Ben McKeogh (Buyer) recently attended the Sustainability Awards at the University of Manchester. Here Ben tells us about the event: The University had organised the event to acknowledge and reward companies they see making strides in sustainability. A range of companies presented their work, each showcasing their achievements in sustainability. An independent coffee shop that now makes it their policy to insist upon full supply chain transparency, explained they want to ensure the farmers are treated well and receive any support they might need. An office supplies company shared with us the implementation of their policy to use electric vehicles to transport goods, thereby lowering their carbon emissions. One of the Trust s suppliers, Carl Zeiss won an award for 'Outstanding Demonstration of Environmental Impact'. They received this for their policies on waste recycling, tracking and refurbishment. For every 100kg of waste, they recycle 90kg, which is significantly higher than average. The Co-Operative shared their 'Bright Future' project that they have implemented in order to help tackle modernday slavery. Within the United Kingdom 3,805 potential victims have been referred to the project with an increase of 30% on the previous year. Outside this project, when victims are freed, most will eventually end up back in slavery. The Co-Operative has We were inspired by the good work that comes from asking a few simple questions and committing to making the required changes. We should be encouraged by the importance placed on sustainability by businesses today. It starts with us. As one of the country's biggest Trusts, we hold the power to make a real difference. Impacting supplier s wallets is the best way to ensure they make positive changes. As Buyers, when we say to suppliers, We need a copy of your sustainability policy" then they will provide or create a sustainability policy. When the supplier then addresses their own supply chain, that is when we see real and lasting changes. Let's make our future a cause for the present. All we have to do, is ask the question.

Savings Update At the beginning of December the Procurement Department s projected trading gap savings figure for 17/18 stands at an impressive 9,724,653 against a target of 6,700,000.

5 Savings Update At the beginning of December the Procurement Department s projected trading gap savings figure for 17/18 stands at an impressive 9,724,653 against a target of 6,700,000. Thank you for everyone s continued hard work. Here are a selection of some of the trading gap projects that have recently delivered: Robert Jones has made a 40,000 saving on IVT Packs for the Eye Hospital and a 36,000 saving for the Dental Hospital on Dentsply Goods. A huge 107,847 saving made on Haemostats by Amy Emmerson benefitting Wythenshawe. Amy also generated 43,000 saving on Anti Embolism Stockings across multiple divisions. 18,000 saving on Verascope Sheaths for Saint Mary s courtesy of Janet Dalton. The Operational Purchasing Team lead by Jackie Cottrell have recently undertaken a huge piece of work looking at the Local Pricing Agreements (LPAs) that the Trust currently has in place. The work is ongoing but already a 55,000 saving has been discovered. A 50,000 saving on Acute Power Tools for Wythenshawe by Sue Carson. Barbara Rimmington generated a saving of 30,000 for RMCH on Neuro Endoscopes. A very impressive 233,000 cost avoidance saving made by Ross Palmer on the Zoll Defib Replacement. Sarah Jackson s various Capital Projects delivered savings worth in excess of 69,000 this month. Supplier Engagement Award Other News Recently MFT were awarded Highly Commended for the Supplier Engagement Award at the NHS in the North West Excellence in Supply Awards. The nomination came from Squadron Medical in regards to the unique link which has been created between the MFT Procurement functions and the manufacturing supply base, distribution organisations and supply chain. An article featured on the DCC Vital website goes into detail about this initiative and the level of work that has gone into forming it. Click here to read it. Leavers Simon Donovan (Senior Purchasing Manager) will be leaving us at the beginning of February 2018. He will be moving to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust to be their new Head of Procurement.

Joseph Nee (Materials Management Assistant) is on a 6 month secondment from the Wythenshawe Materials Management Team.

Ben was already working in the Procurement Department as a Buyer on an interim basis and we are happy to welcome him here permanently. Leavers Simon Donovan (Senior Purchasing Manager) will be leaving us at the beginning of February He will be moving to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust to be their new Head of Procurement. We wish you all the best in your new role Simon. Sean Cartwright (Materials Management Assistant) has also left the Trust to pursue a career in music. Good luck Sean. Joseph Nee (Materials Management Assistant) is on a 6 month secondment from the Wythenshawe Materials Management Team. He is here to gain experience and knowledge from the Central site to share with the Wythenshawe Team. Sarah Vaughn, Anna Kelly and Adam Amzid from the Catalogue, Compliance and Procurement Support Team at Wythenshawe have now settled into Wilmslow Park and are working alongside their Central counterparts in one unified team. New Starters A warm welcome to the following new starters who have recently joined the Department: James Redmond is a new addition to Materials Management. He began on the 18 th December as a Materials Management Assistant. Two new Creditor Payment Officers have started recently in Accounts Payable - Philip Searle and Shireen Khan. Halima Ali has joined the Catalogue, Compliance & Procurement Support Team as a Compliance & Catalogue Assistant. Nichola Bennett has joined us in the new role of Clinical Procurement Matron. She will be based both at Central and Wythenshawe and will provide clinical expertise on Procurement projects. I am sure everyone will make our new starters feel welcome as they settle into their new roles.
