3 Introduction The interest and willingness of the Private Sector to improve the quality of nutrition in Nigeria was visibly evident as the top management representatives participated at the SUN Business Network Members Meeting which held at The Regent, Ikeja Lagos on the 22 nd of February, The members meeting had rich participation ranging from FMCG and CPG brands, SMEs, large-scale farmers, logistics companies, civil society and nutrition experts. A total of 31 participants attended the meeting and 2 new companies signed up to the SUN Business Network which brings membership to 42 businesses. 3

4 SBN Overview of 2017 Plans The SBN Coordinator for Nigeria, Uduak Igbeka, welcomed the members and talked about the objectives and expected outcomes from the meeting which includes; To facilitate Private Sector participation in the activities of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning on Food and Nutrition in Nigeria To share updates and activity plans for 2017 To understand possible support required by members in fulfilling their nutrition commitment Members were encouraged to provide update on activities that have a positive impact on nutrition, challenges and concerns on improving nutrition in their various sectors. 4

5 INTRODUCING ISMAEL BARMOU (THE SBN WEST AFRICA COORDINATOR) The Country Support Manager, SBN London, Hannah Theobald also welcomed members and introduced Ismael Barmou, the SBN West Africa Coordinator. She highlighted how his role would enhance the work and efforts of the SBN Nigeria. Ismael, a first time visitor to Nigeria, appreciated the members for the warm welcome and expressed how much he looks forward to a rich and fulfilling experience working with SUN Business Network Members in Nigeria. Coming from the private sector himself, he understood the challenges faced by business but believed that with the right level of interest and commitment, the Private Sector could contribute immensely to reducing malnutrition in Countries. 5

6 PRIVATE SECTOR S INVOLVEMENT IN NATIONAL POLICY FOR FOOD & NUTRITION BY FEDERAL MINISTRY OF BUDGET & NATIONAL PLANNING The Deputy Director (Food & Nutrition), Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Roselyn Gabriel facilitated the session. Some key points of focus in this session include; The willingness of the government to work with the private sector in achieving the objectives of the policy document. Businesses have a key role to play in combating malnutrition through their products and services. Businesses need to work on increasing awareness to drive demand for nutritious foods and its value to consumers. Leverage on the Maternal New-born Child Health (MNCH) Week as an opportunity to work with Government to improve nutrition awareness and support provision of commodities and services to mothers and children. 6

7 TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR WORKPLACE BREASTFEEDING INITIATIVES SESSION BY ALIVE & THRIVE This session was facilitated by Dr. Uche Ralph-Opara (State Team Lead, FHI 360, Alive & Thrive). She spoke passionately on the need to improve workplace policies and support for nursing mothers to achieve exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6months of life. An approach increasingly being adopted by Businesses to promote breastfeeding in the workplace includes creating an onsite creche/lactation room for employees with infants, where breastmilk could be expressed and stored and infants could be kept to ensure they are easily accessible to mothers during work hours She emphasized that Alive and Thrive are available to provide technical support to any Business willing to adopt this approach. 6

8 WorkStream Validation The core focus areas of the SBN in Nigeria were presented to members for validation After validation, members would then identify specific activities of interest, to develop projects on Support to help members achieve project objectives would also be identified. 8

9 Work Stream Activities- Increase Nutrition Awareness and Demand SBN Team-Led Business Led Reviewing current messages used by members to identify possible gaps Sharing results from a second wave of insight research that could be useful to business Workshop on using social media for nutrition communication Development of messaging to make Nutrition more compelling and aspirational Exploring multi-partner Consumer Demand Stimulation Campaign to increase awareness and make nutrition aspirational 9
