The Coronation Transfer Station, Crowsnest/ Pincher Creek Landfill and Parkland County Transfer Stations all demonstrate a dedication to providing Electronics, Paint and Tire Collection Sites that are well run, safe and convenient for their residents and businesses to use. 2 2018 MUNICIPAL GRANT PROGRAM Applications Were Accepted Through November 23, 2017 Successful applicants will be notified early in the new year. Inquiries can be directed to or call and ask for the Grants Administrator. Municipal Demonstration Grant Project The Municipal Demonstration Grant provides up to $30,000 for municipalities, Indigenous communities and non-profit groups to purchase recycled tire products, made from Alberta scrap tires, for installation in community projects such as playgrounds, walking trails and arenas. Playground installed with pour-in-place surfacing. Tire Marshalling Area Grant Project The Tire Marshalling Area Grant provides up to $30,000 for municipalities and Indigenous communities to upgrade tire collection areas at landfills and transfer stations. Bunker constructed with concrete blocks and an all-weather base. 2

3 Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA) Updates PLAN AHEAD AND BOOK YOUR TDA ASAP TDA is in great demand for use as drainage material in landfills. With this in mind, municipalities should submit their TDA requirements well in advance of their next landfill project. If you have a project planned for completion in the next three years, please contact us as soon as possible at info@albertarecycling.ca to ensure your request is put into our planning process. In addition, consideration is being given to pilot projects testing the performance of TDA in road construction projects. Contact Alberta Recycling for more information. To help you plan TDA projects for , Alberta Recycling will be sending a letter and information form to each municipality and waste management authority/ commission in the province. IMPORTANT RATE CHANGE! The approved transportation rate paid directly to the Registered Tire Processors for delivery of TDA to the landfill site will be reduced by $20 per tonne (regardless of delivery location), which may impact future project costs. TIPS FOR TIRE COLLECTION Keep it clean Having a clean tire pile not only improves the look of your site, it also ensures the Processors collecting tires can remove them safely and efficiently. A clean tire collection site is: Free of non-program items such as tracks, belting, and other debris. Placed in a well-drained area free of growing weeds and grass Easily accessible to both public and processors Fall and spring are peak times for tire pickups. The busiest times of the year for tire collection are during the fall and spring when Albertans are switching over their tires. To avoid delays in collection leading up to spring, consider scheduling your tire pick-ups during the winter months. 3

4 PAINT PROGRAM REMINDERS AND UPDATES Keep HHW and Paint Materials Stored Separately Even though HHW and Paint may be packaged in similar looking containers, they are completely different materials funded under different programs. Environmental fees charged on the sale of new paint are used to fund the Paint Program, while Alberta Environment and Parks, Alberta Infrastructure and municipalities fund the HHW program. For examples of HHW, please go to aep.alberta.ca There is a Cost to Mixing HHW and Paint When HHW is put in Paint Program Bins the load is contaminated and Brokers picking up your paint will charge you for handling any HHW mixed in. As well, if your site has a lot of HHW contamination, Alberta Recycling will contact you and your Municipal Paint Collection Incentive Funding may be affected. Helping Businesses Recycle Paint Commercial painters and businesses are looking for more options to recycle their leftover paint and containers in a cost effective manner. As part of a pilot project, commercial paint roundups were held throughout the province in locations including Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge. There were also monthly roundups held in Calgary and Edmonton. Businesses were allowed to bring as much leftover paint and containers as they wanted, at no charge, to these events held at local paint Collection Sites and Processor facilities. Planning is underway for more commercial paint roundups in If you are planning on holding a roundup in 2018 and would like to include commercial paint in your event, contact us at info@albertarecycling.ca A list of materials allowed in Paint bins can be found at Commercial paint roundup (1). 5 Get ready for 4-H Every fall, Alberta 4-H Clubs gear up their fund raising activities and go farm-to-farm across the province to collect tires and electronics. In return, each registered club receives grant funding from Alberta Recycling for the tires and electronics they bring in. If your site receives end-of-life (EOL) electronics from 4-H, add it to your inventory. Then you can include it with your regular Municipal Collection Funding once it is shipped to a registered Processor. Tires and EOL electronics must be received from the 4-H club directly. Residents cannot drop materials off and expect that 4-H will receive funding for it. Your collection site will be required to sign a collection form for each load received from 4-H. IMPORTANT UPDATES ON COLLECTION SITE FORMS One Form to Register Them All. Registering your collection site for all three recycling programs is now easier than ever. One single form is all you need to fill out to register your site for the Electronics, Paint and Tire Recycling Programs. Site Requirements for each have also been consolidated into one easy-to-follow document. You can find both of these new forms at Updated Municipal Electronics and Paint Collection Incentive Funding Forms Funding Request Forms have been updated and replace ALL previous versions. Please ensure your claims are completed with the new versions which were ed to all collection site contacts on May 1, Contact Collection.Sites@albertarecycling.ca if you need a new copy. Changing Processors? Don t Forget to Notify Alberta Recycling Municipalities choose their own Registered Processor per Program - based on what works best for your collection sites. If you are changing Processors, it s important to notify Alberta Recycling as soon as possible in order for us to update your files by ing info@albertarecycling.ca or by calling the Collection Site Administrator at PLEASE NOTE: Please make sure your personnel complete and submit Municipal Collection Site Funding Forms rather than the Processors doing it on your behalf. 5

Introducing Dave Souch Alberta Reycling s New Field Services Inspector After nine years at Alberta Recycling, our colleague and friend, Charles Huck retired this year and passed the Field Services Inspector torch to Dave Souch. Dave has spent the past few months training under Charles, absorbing his inspection techniques and wisdom. We know the collection sites will continue to be in good hands as Dave makes the Field Services position his own.
