2 NSBE Showcase The NSBE Showcase is a new and exciting event created to expose NSBE Members, Stakeholders, and the local community to the world of engineering. The showcase will include engaging seminars, product presentations and hands-on displays. The exhibit hall features several unique sections plus a main stage where we will showcase the work of our members. Some exhibits are shown below: Commemorative Area - The commemorative area will present the history of our NSBE chapters and our collective quest to achieve the NSBE mission. This is the place to learn all about NSBE. Innovations Corner - Interested in learning about the new technologies? Want to be the first to try out a new app, learn the history and engineering behind classic muscle cars, or experience how a lemon car is transformed into a high-performance race car? The Innovations Corner is the place for you! Marketplace - The marketplace is once again open for business featuring apparel, art, souvenirs and much more!!! In addition, there is an author s showcase featuring books by NSBE members along with books referencing STEM, African-American history, and culture. The NSBEpreneur Showcase offers the opportunity to network with African-American-owned technical companies. Health Area - Being culturally responsible also means engaging in activities to live healthy and productive lives to be able to maximize the impact in our communities. As part of the NSBE Fit initiative, the health area will have free health screenings, engaging discussions, and activities that will help you maintain your well-being. Tech Center - The Tech Center features hands-on activities and programming designed to offer fun and engaging activities to give participants a glimpse into the world of engineers. On Wednesday, watch as Indianapolis Public School (IPS) Students compete in the NSBE Innovators Competition. Similar to a game of Mouse Trap, these machines will complete a simple task using many steps. Technical Research Exhibition, Pre-College Initiative Science Fair, Graduate School Conference Poster Session - Creative, engaging and interactive programs are the primary vehicle through which NSBE fulfills its mission of creating engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. At this year s Convention, we will highlight NSBE programs and competitions to all of our members and visitors. NSBE Cares: Teachers Treasures Wednesday through Friday, visitors of the NSBE Showcase may drop off school supplies that will be donated to Teachers Treasures as part of the NSBE Cares Initiative. These supplies will benefit schools in the Indianapolis community. 5 Commemorative Area The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded by students at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. As we return to Indiana, the place of our founding, we will take this opportunity to honor our rich and positive impact on the community. Chapter Scrapbook - presentation are designed to honor our past by retracing the creation and development of our NSBE chapters. Chapters are invited to submit a scrapbook for inclusion in the commemorative area. The scrapbooks should focus on the history of the chapter and the commitment to engineering exposure on campus and within their surrounding community. expo@nsbe.org to register your chapter for the scrapbook display. 5

Our loyal vendors will be back to offer the finest goods and services. The author s corner will feature literary works from our members and friends. The NSBEpreneur Showcase will highlight Black-owned businesses owned by NSBE members. Lastly, our Special Interest Group (SIG) Showcase gives convention attendees the opportunity to catch up with the happenings of our seven Alumni Special Interest Groups. 8 NSBE AE Special Interest Groups (SIGs) SIGs are signature programs in NSBE chartered to link NSBE with technology and to promote technical excellence among NSBE technical professional members. NSBE offers a number of SIGs focused on a variety of industries that are poised to advance the state of science, technology, and engineering in our communities (globally and nationally). While each SIG differs in structure, the services that they are able to provide are theoretically the same; including (but not limited to) presenting technical workshops, developing scientific products, establishing or joining technology task forces and industry forums, providing technical responses to issues that are affecting our communities, and keeping NSBE members up to date on industry-specific trends. Energy The Energy SIG is your today s future energy information source. The mission of the energy SIG is to serve as the information source for latest news about the Energy industry. The energy SIG also plans to increase the exposure of energy education within the community through youth mentoring, tutoring, and social events. And make a striking impact in energy technical arenas through technical research, technical papers, and technical partnerships. Environmental The programs and projects of the Environmental Engineering Special Interest Group have a goal of achieving and maintaining distributional equity of sustainability and environmentrelated information and experiences. Previous programs have addressed inter-disciplinary sustainability, sustainable transportation regimes, leadership in energy and environmental design and community environmental awareness. Past projects included an inner city residential cleanup based in New Orleans, a nature conservatory tour and a Bioretention garden case study/building with high school students. Future support and resources that will contribute to the campaign to LEED Certify non-profit buildings develop certifiable education content for online courses and educate audiences in environmental awareness, action and sustainability. Information Technology Think Tank Information Technology Think Tank (ITTT) is here to serve as your IT resource within NSBE. Our goals include the recruitment of talented IT professionals; development of a consulting arm; development of strategic alliances with corporations and other IT specific groups/organizations; participation in NSBE Conference training efforts; submitting technical content (papers, abstracts, etc.) to NSBE, BDPA, and other related organizations; identification of and research on IT solutions to issues within the black community (definition of ITTT impact to our community). 8

9 Process Improvement The NSBE Process Improvement SIG will be the organization of choice for process improvement talent. The goal of the SIG is to create process improvement certification and training partnerships, provide members opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills set to real world organizational problems and serve as a process improvement consulting arm for NSBE. Some of the functional areas and services for the process improvement SIG are Capability Maturity Model integrated (CMMI), Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Lean/Six Sigma (LSS). Public Policy Established in July 2010, the NSBE Public Policy SIG serves as the policy research and analysis arm; studying public policy issues affecting Blacks in academia, industry, and government, discussing the effect these policies have on our professional, personal, and public communities; and educating and advising on adverse policies which impact our social, professional, and community condition. To the extent that policy problems or solutions are technical in nature, the Public Policy SIG will employ research-based methods to explore topical areas, develop position papers, lectures, and discussion forums, and develop solutions to improve or enhance the public policies of the United States. Space The Space SIG (NSBE Space) is a technology-focused forum of space professionals and enthusiasts. Many of our members are employed in space-related activity or pursuing graduate research in space-related fields of study. Established in the spring of 2005, we believe that space-related technological advancement is the destiny of all humanity and that the community, including the Black community, must play a significant role in this enterprise. Women in Science and Engineering The WISE SIG addresses issues that affect women in science and technology fields such as career advancement, family leave, work/life balance, health issues, life changing events, and networks. Past WISE events include the highly popular Women s Corporate Roundtable at National Convention, WISE Pamper Party, and the WISE luncheon. New EISE programs to look forward to are Empowering Women in Science and Engineering (EWISE), EWORDS and Dress for Success. 9
