2 Discover technology seeds and make a social impact Management Message Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd. (KYOTO-iCAP) was founded in December 2014 as a wholly owned investment firm of Kyoto University. Our venture fund mainly invests in start-ups and early-stage ventures, which endeavor to commercialize knowledge generated by the University s researchers. It also pursues a hands-on approach including providing assistance in designing a business and development plan. Kyoto University, located in Kyoto City, Japan, is one of the highest-ranked national universities in Asia. It is also known as a faculty that produces many world-class researchers. KYOTO-iCAP plays a key role in the University s technology commercialization process. Koji Murota President and CEO Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd. In recent times, two major waves of ventures have been expanding all over the world. One is that of start-ups routinely emerging everywhere. Entrepreneurial activities are no longer uncommon in a situation where a university is definitely the center of start-up generation. The other is the rise of the patient capital fund such as a university venture fund (UVF). Sometimes, disruptive inventions take too long to enter the market. Patient capital funds generated by universities can withstand such a long-term venture investment. Further, cross-border connections among entrepreneurs and UVFs are set to begin. KYOTO-iCAP launched INNOVATION Kyoto 2016 Limited Liability Partnership as a UVF, which means that it seeks to facilitate social innovation based on research outcomes from the University. Our UVF is the first full-fledged patient capital fund in Japan, which can invest for more than 15 years. We are ready to support ambitious entrepreneurs who commit themselves to make a difference through the commercialization of technology. We also strive to generate investment opportunities for private equity investors, including other venture capital firms, and business corporations. Beyond traditional capital, we strive to generate innovation capital. Sincerely, Company Profile Name Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co.,Ltd. (KYOTO-iCAP) Address 36-1 Yoshida Honmachi, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto Japan Founded Dec. 22, 2014 Paid-in capital JPY 35,000,000 Shareholder Kyoto University (100%) President & CEO Koji Murota Business business (as part of support program for utilizing specified research results approved by MEXT and METI based on the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act.)
3 Discover technology seeds and make a social impact Policy We specialize in seed and early-stage investment, which traditional venture capitalists (VCs) find hard to make. As the manager of a patient capital fund, KYOTO-iCAP keeps supporting you closely so that you can achieve the milestones that have been designed and agreed upon among us. We are open to a variety of co-investments with other VCs, banks, and business corporations, among other related entities. We help you in designing products and services and commercialize your idea using various approaches. Target We invest in ventures that (aim to) commercialize research outcomes derived from Kyoto University. Such research outcomes include intellectual property, knowhow, and other disruptive ideas. Further details are provided below: The utilization of research outcomes is expected to enhance social value, such as by the creation of new markets and new jobs. The business is expected to fulfill social demands and add new value, such as productivity improvement, to the national economy. The business is expected to contribute to the improvement of academic research at Kyoto University and eventually at the national level. The commercialization of technology (or knowhow) is scheduled to materialize within 5 to 10 years so that we can expect, with a reasonable chance of success, the recovery of investment before the fund matures. Fund Scheme As the general partner, Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd. established Innovation Kyoto 2016 Limited Liability Partnership together with funding from limited partners, i.e., Kyoto University and an accredited investor. We invest in and provide other managerial National University Corporation, Kyoto University (LP) 100% Equity Accredited Investor (LP) support to start-ups that utilize the research outcomes of Kyoto University. Louis Pasteur's research is thought to exemplify this sort of method, which bridges the gap between "basic" and "applied" research. The term was introduced by Donald Stokes in his book Pasteur's Quadrant. The company logo of KYOTO-iCAP represents technology seeds transforming (moving) from Bohr and Edison s quadrants into Pasteur s (upper right corner).
