1 The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery RESIDENT JOURNAL CLUB PROGRAM Deadline: August 30, 2016 The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) is proud to sponsor a resident journal club program. The program will enhance residency training by providing educational information on managing an effective journal club, and will support teaching residents how to evaluate current scientific literature. Objective: The purpose of this program is to promote career long skills in evaluating the Orthopaedic literature as it relates to impact on practice decision amongst Orthopaedic Residents. Mission- to promote increased usage of high quality Orthopaedic literature for changes in practice decision making Vision- to see increased dependence of Orthopaedic residencies on Journal club activities for teaching Orthopaedic trainees skills for effectively evaluating the musculoskeletal literature

2 Eligibility: Eligible applicants are senior orthopaedic and osteopathic residents (4 th or 5 th year) in approved orthopaedic or osteopathic residency training programs. At this time, applications are limited to programs in the United States; equivalent programs in Canada are also eligible. A suitable mentor (residency program chair, department chair, or other orthopaedic or osteopathic surgeon) is required. Deadline for Application: August 30, Submit the original application with signatures by the deadline. Submit a copy of institution s IRS Tax Determination Letter. Submission Instructions: Submit the application electronically and attach a pdf file of the IRS Tax Determination letter to info@jbjs.org with a copy to mswiontkowski@jbjs.org by the deadline. Period of Grant: September, 2016 to June, 2017 Amount: At least $2,000 per program, up to a maximum of $2,500. ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Purpose: The primary purpose of the grant is to support journal club activities. The grant period will be for one year. Funds not needed for direct support of the journal club can be used to support general resident educational activity, such as the establishment of an electronic media learning center or other worthwhile educational endeavors. The specific goal of the Journal Club Program is to promote career long skills in evaluating the Orthopaedic literature as it relates to impact on practice decision amongst Orthopaedic Residents. Specific objectives are: To provide programs with guidance in creating an effective journal club; To teach residents how to read and evaluate a scientific article; To engender effective participation in the journal club process; Eligibility: Eligible applicants are senior orthopaedic or osteopathic residents (4 th or 5 th year) in approved orthopaedic or osteopathic residency training programs in the United States; equivalent programs in Canada are also eligible. A suitable mentor (residency program chairman, department chairman, or other orthopaedic or osteopathic surgeon) is required. It is the responsibility of the residents to write the grant proposal, with the administrative chief resident as a co-signer on the grant with the mentor. Application Requirements: See attached application form. Applications for this award must include the following: The goals of the journal club program. The mechanics and methods by which the journal club will be conducted. The recommended meeting frequency is monthly. A brief proposed budget. Acceptable expenses include subscriptions to orthopaedic journals and resources, travel grants for guest speakers, and costs of the monthly journal club meeting (site, refreshments, and honoraria and small travel expenses for an occasional guest speaker). 06/15 2

3 Review Procedure: A review committee identified by the Editor-in-Chief of JBJS will review the applications and select the grant recipients. Grants of at least $2,000 per program will be awarded, up to a maximum of $2,500. Notification of Award: JBJS will notify each applicant within 30 days of the application deadline. Payment Information: The journal club grant will be disbursed in two payments. The first payment of one-half will be issued upon approval of the application; the final payment of one-half will be issued when the required final evaluation and financial reports are received by JBJS. The grant will be made to the department and will not provide for overhead expense payable to any institution. Implementation Materials: Journal club aids, selected by the Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, will be made available online at jbjs.org. Survey of Recipients: As a requirement for funding, the resident and mentor must agree to participate in periodic surveys conducted by JBJS, which will provide useful information pertinent to the mission of this organization. Evaluation: JBJS will send an evaluation form to the grantee for completion. The form will be due by June 1, The evaluation form must be submitted to receive the second grant payment. If the full amount of the funding is not used during the grant year, the excess may be carried over to the next year with the approval of JBJS. 06/15 3
