3 Main Features and Rules for Participation Open to all domains of research Open to researchers of any nationality Broad definition of the non-academic sector: participation of businesses (incl. SMEs) & other socio-economic actors Strong emphasis on excellent employment & working conditions, in line with the EU Charter and Code for Researchers Full-time commitment Budget covers mainly salaries of researchers Eligible researchers: Early Stage Researchers (ESR): no PhD, < 4 years research experience Experienced Researchers (ER): PhD or/and > 4 years research experience Host institutions: public or private universities, research centres, commercial enterprises, NGOs

4 One Key Requirement International Mobility 3 rd countries (TC) EU At the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals, or recruitment by the HI, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies etc.) in the country of their host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. AC: Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Turkey, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Faroe Islands, Republic of Moldova

6 Individual Fellowships (IF) Opportunities for postdocs ERs of any nationality* at various career stages to get new/ diversify their skills mobility to the MS/AC where the beneficiary is located (1-2 years) initial outgoing phase to a TC (1-2 years) mandatory reintegration phase (1 year) Additional 3 to 6 months secondment option, within Europe Reintegration Panel return/reintegration of researchers in a longer term research position in Europe mobility from a TC to Europe (EU/AC) Career Restart Panel CAR to resume research in Europe after a career break (researchers must not have been active in research for at least 12 months immediately prior to the deadline) * IF Global & Reintegration: nationals of EU/AC and long-term residents only (long-term residence = a period of full-time research activity of at least 5 consecutive years).

7 Innovative Training Networks (ITN) Opportunities for PhD students Structured doctoral training for ESR based on cross-border and cross-sector partnerships (consortia) To train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial & innovative ESR, to strengthen the international, interdisciplinary & intersectoral aspects Exposure to the non-academic sector as elementary part of the training Duration of projects: max. 4 years Support of ESR: for 3-36 months Max. 540 researcher-months per consortium (or 180 for EID with 2 partners)

10 Research & Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) International and inter-sector collaboration through staff exchanges Based on a joint research/innovation project Research & innovation, administrative, technical & managerial staff (ESR, ER) Staff member: 6 months at the sending institution prior to the 1 st secondment Duration of secondments: 1-12 months Duration of projects: max. 4 years, max. 540 PM Partners from at least 3 countries (min. 2 partners from EU/AC) secondments within Europe must be intersectoral secondments can not be realised within one country or only within 3 rd countries Secondments from a TC to a MS/AC eligible only if the TC is listed in the Annex A to the Work Programme Annex A annexes/h2020-wp1415-annex-a-countries-rules_en.pdf

11 RISE 2014: Project Example NANOREMOVAS (international + inter-sector cooperation) Total EC Contribution = 688,500 EUR / 48 months Total eligible researcher months = INTI KTH 5 will develop and implement a pilot plant for the remote treatment of arsenic polluted waters based on the application of advanced multifunctional nanostructured materials, already tested at the laboratory level. The project includes the cooperation between the industry and academia of partners from Europe and Argentina UNMDP AERIS UAB INNOVA BIC 8

29 Outcome of Evaluation Restrictions for Submission of Proposals (under the ERC WP 2015 ) Step 1 Step 2 A - is of sufficient quality to pass to step A - fully meets the ERC's excellence 2 of the evaluation criterion and is recommended for funding if sufficient funds are available B - is of high quality but not sufficient to B - meets some but not all elements of the pass to step 2 of the evaluation ERC's excellence criterion, will not be funded C - is not of sufficient quality to pass to step 2 of the evaluation PI whose proposal was evaluated as category C in the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals under Work Programme 2014 may not submit a proposal to the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals made under Work Programme 2015 and PI whose proposal is finally evaluated as category B in the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals under Work Programme 2014 may not submit a proposal to the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals made under Work Programme A PI may submit proposals to different ERC frontier research grant calls made under the same Work Programme, but only the first eligible proposal will be evaluated.
