Important Student Information Student Visas Once you have applied for your course and received a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), the next step is to apply for your student visa. Information about applying for a visa can be found at: Ensure that you allow enough time between lodging your application and the start of your course, as applying for a visa can be a lengthy process. If your visa is not approved, you will receive a full refund for the fees that you have paid. Working Working while you study in Australia can help complement your study and living experience, as well as help you to manage your living expenses and

10 possibly gain work experience in your study area. Most student visas allow you to work for up to 40 hours every two weeks while your course is in session, and unrestricted hours during any scheduled course break. Before you undertake any paid work you should make sure your visa allows you to work. Find out more at the Visa compliance In order for your visa to remain valid, you must: Remain enrolled with SABT and maintain satisfactory course progress and attendance. Provide your Australian address to SABT so we can contact you. Let us know if you change address and provide us the details. Continue to be able to support yourself financially while you re in Australia. Do not breach the working conditions applicable to your visa. Note that if you wish to change your course, you will need to apply for a new student visa. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Most international students must take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to meet the costs of any medical or hospital care needed whilst in Australia. You will need to buy OSHC before you come to Australia to cover you from when you arrive and for the entire duration of your stay here. More information is available at: Stud/More/Health-Insurance-for- Students You can choose to take out OSHC with a provider recommended by us, or with the Australian OSHC provider of your choice. There are five providers of OSHC in Australia as follows: Australian Health Management Allianz Global Assistance BUP Australia Medibank Private NIB You can visit the websites of these providers to find detailed information on what they cover and to decide which provider is right for you. You should note that your OSHC does not cover dental, optical or physiotherapy. If you want to be covered for these treatments, speak to your OSHC provider. For more information on what your OSHC insurance covers, as well as what to do if you need treatment, refer to the Department of Health and Ageing s (DoHA) Frequently Asked Questions. Travel Insurance You should also consider taking out travel insurance to cover unanticipated events such as cancelled flights, lost luggage or lost wallets. There are numerous travel insurance providers for you to choose from. Planning your departure Passport and Visa Check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months prior to your entry arrival in Australia, and that you have all your visa documentation. It is also a good idea to make copies of your passport in case you lose your passport.

11 Packing your bags Sydney has a humid subtropical climate with mild to cool weather in Winter (June to August) and warm to hot weather in the Summer (December to February). Generally you will not need heavy winter gear and you can always compensate with layers of clothes if you happen to arrive in Winter. It may be worthwhile considering bringing a few treasures too from home to give you some comfort if you are missing your friends and family. However, keep in mind that most airlines have a checked baggage restriction of approximately 15-20kg (about Ib). Check out for the latest weather information around Australia. Finances (Money $AUD) You should bring enough Australian currency in cash for your first few days, without carrying large amounts of cash on you. You should also be able to easily access AUD $1,500 to $3,000 in funds so that you can start establishing yourself and your new home quickly. If you are carrying more than AUD $10,000, or equivalent currency, you must declare it to Customs officials when you enter Australia. Cost of Living The estimated cost of living for Australia is almost $20,000 per year exclusive of tuition fees. This would cover accommodation, food, public transport, clothing, entertainment, books, stationary and incidentals. You are strongly encouraged to do your own research into the cost of living in Sydney taking into consideration your own lifestyle choices in order to come up with an estimated cost. Arriving in Australia During your flight to Australia, your airline will provide you with an Incoming Passenger Card declaration to complete. Questions need to be answered accurately and truthfully, especially in relation to items in your luggage that you may have to declare to customs officials. Upon arrival, you will need to follow the signs to an immigration checkpoint. Here, you will need to show your passport, visa and Incoming Passenger Card. You may also have to show your confirmation of enrolment (CoE), insurance policies, and original or certified copies of items such as your birth certificate, medical records. Once you have cleared this checkpoint you will enter the baggage area where you can claim your luggage and proceed to customs for baggage examination. If you are unsure of where to go or what to do when you disembark from your flight in Australia, ask an official for help, they will guide you. Leaving the airport - Transport options Once you have clear customs and collected your bags, you will go into the arrivals hall. If you need to exchange some money into Australian dollars you will find Currency exchange booths throughout the airport. Sydney International Airport is located at Sydney Airport about 15 minutes from the CBD. You can get from the airport to your accommodation by taxi or by public transport. If you have arranged to have friends

12 or relatives to meet you, they will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall. If you are transferring to a domestic flight, follow the signs to the domestic terminal. At some of the larger airports this may be some distance, so look out for airport terminal shuttle services to get you there quickly and safely. Airport pick-up for international students can be arranged upon request. Students will be met at the arrivals hall and taken to their accommodation. Accommodation The Academy does not have accommodation facilities, but can refer you to a homestay agency who can assist you this. Hostel accommodation is a good short-term choice. Usually a hostel provides a furnished room with access to a shared bathroom, laundry, lounge and recreational activities. Some hostels also provide computer access. It is recommended that you look at two or three properties prior to making a decision. Many hostels are privately run and therefore come under the Rooming House Act. If you sign a lease, you are protected by the Residential Tenancies Act. Longer-term accommodation options include renting a house or apartment. Renting an apartment or flat varies greatly in cost and conditions. Become familiar with the suburb or area before you sign a lease so that you know you can be happy in the area. Share accommodation is also popular with young Australians and overseas students. This gives you the opportunity to improve your English, if necessary, and to learn more about Sydney, and other countries. For more information about renting and your rights and responsibilities, visit the NSW Fair Trading web site at: ftw/tenants_and_home_owners/ Renting_a_home.page English Language Assistance SABT can provide ongoing English language support through its sister organisation, Southern English College. We can also assist you with study skills support to all students. You can contact us to talk about your needs. Student Counselling SABT can also offer you a range of welfare services to help with the mental, physical, social and spiritual well-being of international students. These services may include, through direct provision or referral, information/ advice about: accommodation, counselling, crisis services, disabilities and equity issues, financial matters, legal issues, medical issues, mental health, peer mentoring, programs promoting social interaction, religious and spiritual matters, and stressmanagement. It may also include advice on academic and study issues. External support services are available to you, depending on the circumstance and nature, for example the service offers a counselling service that respects everyone s right to be heard, understood and cared for. They also provide information about other support services that are available in communities around Australia. If you feel that you might need telephone counselling, you can call about anything that might be troubling you. These services will be provided at no additional cost to you.
