3 THE GROWTH MODEL QUALIFIED DEMAND RESEARCH AND EDUCATION GROWTH FINANCING QUALIFIED SUPPLY The Southern Denmark growth model represents the foundations for realising the potential within the individual business areas. The model constitutes a commercial-political infrastructure that makes it possible to target input at areas where the challenges are greatest and offer the broadest perspective for the individual business area. The model supports the framework conditions in all areas: Supply: The Growth Forum will support the establishment of more companies along with more and better products and services on the market. Demand: The Growth Forum will stimulate, organise and qualify the demand for new products and services. Financing: The Growth Forum will boost the companies access to venture capital and development funds. Research and education: The Growth Forum will reinforce research, education and knowledge within the business areas, and ensure that the companies have access to the relevant skills.

4 THE FUTURE OF business IN THE REGION OF SOUTHERN DENMARK The Growth forum of Southern Denmark is responsible for business development in the Region of Southern Denmark. The Growth Forum is made up of representatives of the regional council, the local authorities, research institutions, business communities and business organizations. The Growth Forum is a commercial-political working relationship involving the business community, knowledge and education institutions, unions and employers organisations, local authorities and the Region of Southern Denmark. The Growth Forum is the hub for the regional growth initiatives. The Growth Forum s three main tasks are: to prepare a commercial development strategy and action plan to monitor regional and local growth conditions to recommend co-financing of regional business development activities Business tools The following tools are used to achieve the strategic goals of increased productivity and greater occupational frequency: HR and education Entrepreneurship Research, innovation and new technologies including design and ICT Cluster development Outlying areas, cross-border collaboration and internationalisation are important interdisciplinary priorities within each of the three business areas. On its own initiative, the Growth Forum can launch special measures if a particular measure carries appreciable commercial potential that lies outside the Growth Forum s three business areas. These may be measures intended to address challenges within both general and specific framework conditions.

5 the strategic goals With its new commercial development strategy, the Southern Denmark Growth Forum will work towards the following strategic goals in 2020: A level of productivity that is 10 per cent above the OECD average, and An occupational frequency on a par with the OECD Top 5 The three business areas targeted by the commercial development strategy up to 2020 are: Health and welfare innovation, sustainable energy and experience economy. HEALTH AND Social innovation: Health and welfare solutions SUSTAINABLE ENERGY: Energy efficiency and Offshore Experience economy: Tourism and Design Sectors that work with health and welfare solutions that can contribute to dealing with societal challenges in the field of welfare and, at the same time, generate increased growth in private companies. The emphasis is on utilising business opportunities in welfare technologies and welfare services in association with hospital construction, prevention and nutrition, greater self-care, care services and treatment of illness. Sectors that work with technologies, knowledge and components that lead to intelligent and efficient utilisation of all forms of energy. Sectors that work with technologies, knowledge and components intended for use in all areas of the value chain for offshore energy production from both renewable and fossil energy sources. Service sectors in the field of holiday and commercial tourism. Sectors that make use of design with a view to adding even more value to the company s products. Sectors that work with foods, where experiences are incorporated to boost the value of the product. The Growth Forum continue to focus on a limited number of business areas with great growth potential GOALS Productivity level 10% above the OECD average & Occupational frequency on a par with the OECD Top VISION In 2020, Southern Denmark is to be distinguished by high growth powered by elevated productivity and employment, and by companies that act globally

7 BUSINESS clusters The Region of Southern Denmark continues to build a cluster infrastructure as the centrepoint for commercial development within a set number of prioritised business areas. Corporate collaboration projects have been set up in the form of public-private partnerships with the potential to generate growth and employment in Southern Denmark. These are: The welfare technology cluster Welfare Tech - The energy efficiency cluster Lean Energy Cluster - The design cluster design2innovate - Offshore clusters Offshore Centre Denmark - Lindoe Offshore Renewables Center (LORC) - The Growth Forum foods initiative Vaeksthus Southern Denmark - The businesses are to be the driving force behind the commercial development. In the period up to 2020, the Growth Forum of Southern Denmark will therefore continue to focus on the development of existing and new strong clusters within the specified business areas.

8 GATEWAY TO EUROPE The Region of Southern Denmark is a dynamic growth area which enjoys a central geographical location, not only as regards the rest of Denmark, but also Germany Denmark s largest trading partner and the rest of Europe. The Region of Southern Denmark covers a geographic area stretching from approximately 40 km north-west of Vejle to Padborg in the south, and from Esbjerg in the west to Nyborg in the east. Southern Denmark is home to one of Scandinavia s largest and most modern hospitals, the Odense University Hospital, which specialises in heart and coronary diseases, cancer and the replantation of fingers, hands, etc. Denmark s third largest university the University of Southern Denmark is also based in the region with campuses in Esbjerg, Kolding, Odense, Sønderborg, Copenhagen and Slagelse. Several of the companies based in the Region of Southern Denmark are world-renowned: Danfoss in Nordborg, Ecco Danmark in Tønder, Gumlink in Vejle, LEGO in Billund and the offshore industry in Esbjerg.
