Corporate Responsibility Annual Report

Corporate Responsibility (CR) has always been a key part of Merrick s culture. To further this strong tradition, we challenged a team within our Leadership Development Program to refresh our CR approach with an eye towards the future. The team s recommendations shaped the four key pillars outlined in this report the areas where Merrick will make a difference each year. At Merrick, we encourage our staff to follow their passions and support their communities, professional associations, non-profit organizations, schools, and churches. These employee initiatives combine with our corporately funded and administered CR activities to make up the whole of our CR program. Merrick improves the quality of life in the United States and throughout the world through our projects in national security, energy, infrastructure, and life sciences. We create careers for our staff and perform important projects for our diverse client base. But we also believe this is not enough it is our responsibility to give back to our communities. As CEO, I fully endorse our corporate responsibility programs. Dave Huelskamp Chairman and Chief Executive Officer For twenty years, Merrick has owned and operated an ethanol plant at the MillerCoors brewery in Golden, Colorado. Merrick s interns tour the facility, which converts waste beer into ethanol, every year as both an introduction to a working ethanol plant and green concepts.

Safe water supplies, hygienic sanitation, and effective water management are fundamental to global health. Merrick is using our expertise in point-of-use (POU) water treatment systems to help provide clean drinking water to underdeveloped areas of the world.

Improving Communities through Access to Clean Water Merrickan Dave Luke (HPF Merritt Island) founded Clean Water4Life (CW4L). CW4L s mission is to provide standalone water purification systems that are easily transportable and require no electrical power or chemical supplies to produce fresh drinking water. Clean water positively impacts the lives of those living in the most remote areas of underdeveloped nations. To date, CW4L has successfully deployed three water purification systems. In addition to the efforts of Dave and his team, Merrick also supports CW4L s mission with funding and personnel, as a corporate initiative.

Merrickans have a passion for helping guide young people and encouraging interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and careers. By volunteering to show children what it is like to be an engineer for a day, mentoring young women as they embark on university-level STEM studies, and many other activities, Merrickans actively support our youth.

Engineer for a Day Bryan Clark (IE Charlotte) gave a classroom of eighth graders an introduction to engineering. During the lesson, the students designed highway interchanges and built paper skyscrapers. Funding for Scholarships and Wounded Warriors Candis Hamilton (HPF - Colorado Springs) received three awards from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) for her service: 1) Pikes Peak Young Post Member Award (2015 and 2016); 2) Vice President s Medal (2016); and 3) national-level Young Member Medal (2017). Her efforts with SAME include raising money to fund scholarships and for Wounded Warriors. Society of Women Engineers Spring Summit Christi Wisleder (IE- Greenwood Village) and Allyson Junker (IE - Denver) along with Jill Tietjen (Vice Chair of Merrick s Board of Directors) participated in the Society of Women Engineers Spring Summit. The day of seminars focused on networking, interview strategies, sustainability, and professional development, and highlighted how women can Be the Difference.

Giving back is a longstanding tradition at Merrick, whether it s using engineering skills to assist a non-profit, taking a day to help build a new home, or engaging with the community in some other way. Individual Merrickans across the company are helping to better the communities in which we live. Community Service captures these efforts

Famine to Feast: Reducing Food Waste Jen McDonald (NST- Los Alamos) and her husband, Jaret, formed Famine to Feast in an attempt to reduce food waste. The Famine to Feast app uses GPS to connect those with extra food to those who need it. The app has been successfully deployed in the Los Alamos area and used to rally the community to provide food for firefighters battling wildfires in June The McDonalds are raising funds to develop the app and market the Famine to Feast concept. Visit to donate. Supporting Baoma Village, Freetown, and Sierra Leone Detlef Kurpanek (E&C Greenwood Village) and his wife support a school in Sierra Leone. They help raise funds to support critical efforts, such as replacing corrugated metal walls with brick walls and diverting water flow away from the school s structures during storms. Please visit to donate.

Community Improvement captures Merrick s enterprise-level CR. Whether it s sponsoring a table at a STEM Edge event, donating to organizations, or encouraging recycling efforts, Merrick demonstrates our commitment to the people and communities in which we all live and work.

Merrick supports a variety of economic development and nonprofit organizations through donations, including: Mile High United Way Boy Scouts of America Children s Museum of Oak Ridge Lone Tree Arts Center Fairbanks Youth Advocates Chambers of Commerce, including: Denver, Aurora, and South Metro (Denver) Living our Commitment to the Environment The Los Alamos office was nominated for 2017 Business Recycler of the Year. The office s efforts include donating unneeded office furniture to Habitat for Humanity; providing reusable silverware, plates, and cups in the office; and using recycle bins for paper, aluminum cans, plastic containers, and packaging materials.
