The second-stage call is open 1 December January Additional cost model, the Academy s contribution to funding is 70 % Funding period

Academy projects Academy Projects are designed to promote the quality and diversity of research and its capacity for renewal. The funding provides researchers with an opportunity to carry out scientifically ambitious research, to achieve new breakthroughs and to engage in high-risk research. The aim is to attain internationally as high scientific standard of work as possible and to strengthen the creativity, capacity and impact of research. The Academy encourages researchers to engage in international mobility that will support their research a researcher hired to a project works abroad for a fixed period or a project may also hire a foreign researcher who already works in Finland or who will come to work within the Finnish scientific community. 21

Academy projects PI must have the qualifications of a professor or a docent and an employment relationship with our university or must explain in the application how the salary will be covered during the project s funding Funding is for four years starting The funding is granted primarily to teams with post docs. Full cost model, SA-funding 70 % Personnel costs of the PI 6 months for project management 12 months for well-substantiated research-related reasons PI or any other researcher affiliated with a CoE is eligible to apply for Academy Project funding only during the second three-year term of CoE funding. *** 22

Research councils comments on size of Academy Projects in 2015 call In the September 2015 call, the Research Council for Culture and Society will grant a maximum of 600,000 euros per Academy Project and a maximum of 350,000 euros per consortium subproject. As a rule, the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment strives to keep the total costs of Academy Projects as they are entered in the applications. If the Research Council does make reductions, these are primarily targeted at large-scale projects. In the September 2015 call, the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering will grant a maximum of 700,000 euros per Academy Project (175,000 euros per year). 5 In recent years, the Research Council for Health has granted Academy Projects a maximum of 500,000 euros in funding. The average funding for consortium subprojects (n=73) in spring 2015 was 307,000 euros. 4 September 2015

Project collaboration or consortium? Normal project collaboration, partners independently apply (with their own application) for funding for their projects and describe the collaboration in each research plan. The Academy treats project collaboration applications as separate applications. A consortium composed of research projects working at different sites (e.g. different universities or departments) A consortium is a fixed-term body of independent subprojects that work under a joint research plan. The Academy treats a consortium application as one application, and the funding decision is made by a research council or subcommittee at the Academy. 24

2015: Consortium applications Consortium application submitted by consortium PI on behalf of subprojects But only after all subprojects have completed their applications. Consortium PIs should therefore check the status of the consortium application. The consortium PI shall append to the application his or her own appendices as well as the joint research plan for the consortium. In contrast to earlier practice, all consortium parties must now also submit their own appendices. The same process applies also to calls for letters of intent. The new consortium application process is outlined on SA website under Guidelines for consortium application. 4 September 2015

Targeted Academy Projects ICT 2023 Programme, 5 th thematic call Information Security / Letters of intent. Funding is granted for 2 years. Memorandum of the thematic call and more information (in Finnish). Funding for development research (depends on the funding available from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Check the results of government budget session on 9 10 September 2015). Participation in a targeted call does not inhibit the submission of a simultaneous application to another call, provided that the research plans are different. Applicants affiliated with a Centre of Excellence should check with the call s contact person to see if they are eligible to apply. 4 September 2015

Restrictions / Academy projects Academy Project funding is primarily intended towards the salaries of researchers who work full-time on the project In the September call, Academy will consider only one application per researcher for Academy Project funding (incl. consortium subproject) or for a research post as Academy Research Fellow or Postdoctoral Researcher. Only the first application received will be reviewed. If the applicant has an ongoing Academy Project funding (an independent project or a consortium subproject), or funding allocated to an Academy Research Fellow or an Academy Professor for hiring a research team, the applicant will not be eligible to receive funding for a simultaneous Academy Project except for very compelling reasons. However, in the September 2014 call, a PI who has an ongoing project with Academy Project funding ending on 31 December 2016 can be granted Academy Project funding as of 1 September The PI of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) or any other researcher affiliated with a CoE is eligible to apply for Academy Project funding only during the second three-year term of CoE funding. *** 27

FUNDING FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCHER MOBILITY BASED ON BILATERAL AGREEMENTS The Academy of Finland s funding for bilateral research cooperation and researcher mobility supports the Academy s general science policy objectives. With this funding opportunity, we promote the international interaction and contacts of Finnish researchers and the internationalisation of Finnish research environments. The mobility funding call in 2015 is implemented with the following countries: China, (incl. Taiwan), Germany, India, Japan, Russia and South Africa. 4 September 2015

International mobility (from Finland) within projects The mobility allowance, applied for as a research cost, depends neither on the target country nor on the duration of the stay. It is a taxable benefit and indirect employee costs will be deducted from it: researchers without dependants: 1,050/month researchers with dependants: 1,500/month The mobility allowance is applied for as a research cost for implementing the research plan and as part of the original application of the project (e.g. Academy Projects, research programmes and research posts). The recommended amount should be enough to cover the costs of higher living expenses from living abroad. The allowance is applied for in the online services under Other costs. Travel costs for travel abroad are entered under Travel costs. If researchers and their families stay abroad for at least six months, funding can also be applied for to cover family travel costs. Grants can be awarded to non-eu researchers for a maximum of one year s research spell in Finland. Grants are not paid to EU citizens. While working in Finland, they must have an employment relationship. 4 September 2015

Mobility policy of JYU In JYU mobility allowance will be paid: 30 % of daily allowances of the target country Rest of the allowances (1 500 or ) will be paid as Accomodation costs The maximum allowance for accommodation payable over and above the per diem is the amount shown on a receipt or other reliable written proof provided by the accommodation establishment. 34 The Academy requires open access publishing and urges to make research data openly available As of the September 2015 call Academy-funded projects are committed to open access publishing. The Academy urges projects to make their research data and methods freely available. Funding can be applied for to cover research costs arising from open access publishing of research results. This funding is applied for in the online services under Funding for the project/services. The publications are justified in the research plan under item 3, Implementation/Publication plan, and the costs are justified under item 6, Implementation/Budget. Academy also recommends that research projects make their research data freely available As part of the data management plan, under item 4 of the research plan, applicants should therefore describe how the data will be made available to others. For more information on open science, open access publishing and definitions, open data and recommended archives, please see appendix 6 of the September 2015 call for applications. The open science guidelines are also available on our website under Open science 4 September 2015

2015: the maximum length of CV is four pages The Academy asks that applicants draft their CV in accordance with the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity and the guidelines of the Academy. The Academy recommends that CVs should be no more than four pages long, which is the international norm. Fill in the CV taking into account the nature of the call, your research career stage and the practices of your own scientific discipline. Your CV should be a concise presentation of your scientific merits and other achievements relevant to the call concerned. Fill in your CV where applicable and appropriate, following the structure recommended by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity. In the Academy s calls, submit the CV and the list of publications as separate appendices. When submitting an application to the Academy, your CV should therefore not include your publications. For more guidelines on the CV, please see SA website under Curriculum vitae guidelines. 4 September 2015

Public description of your project In the online services, applicants must fill in a short, popular description of the project. The description is very important: it should briefly describe to a general audience the topic, methods and rationale of the research. Think carefully about what you write in the description. It will be used both for communications purposes and in the review. The Academy can not edit project descriptions neither technically nor content-wise it is the applicants themselves who are responsible for the content, clarity and style of the descriptions. If the project is granted funding, we will publish the description on our website as is. Please do not use any special symbols in the descriptions, as they might not print out correctly. 4 September 2015

Review criteria In the review of applications, the Academy uses the following criteria: scientific quality and innovativeness of the research plan competence of the applicant/the research team feasibility of the research plan quality and strengthening of the research environment international and national collaborations and researcher mobility significance of the project for the promotion of professional research careers. 47

Review Depending on the research project, the significance and impact of the research for society and business and industry is reviewed. In principle, a project to be funded must benefit Finnish research and society or international collaboration. Research projects that are ambitious and aim to achieve new breakthroughs always carry a risk of failure. This is taken into consideration in the review of applications. The aim of the Academy is to provide an opportunity for scientific breakthroughs and to enhance the renewal and regeneration of science and research, even in view of potential risks. 48

Feedback from evaluators The abstract is the most important part, it should be written carefully Follow the guidelines and don t have too many words in one page Why is your topic actual? 54 Review report An example from 2014 call Prinsipal investigator: Anneli Eteläpelto, Professor (adult education) Department of Education Project title: The Role of Emotions in Agentic Learning at Work (REAL) Public description: HakKuvaus&CLICKED_ON=&HAKNRO1=288925&UI LANG=en 54

Scientific quality and innovativeness of research plan This is a well written and outstanding application. The proposal makes a convincing case for a significant project, which has the potential to make genuine contributions to the field. The project is ambitious but not unrealistically so. The proposal is both ambitious and innovative in relation to the subject of study, theoretical and methodological approaches. It builds on and is embedded within an established body of work, and will make good use of existing innovative data, as well as generating new data and innovative methodologies. The applicant is aiming to breakthrough on these different levels. Firstly, the research team state that they will develop 'innovative theorising' on emotions in agentic learning at work. Through their methodological tools they expect to find new evidence on the role of emotions in professional learning which will also contribute to the further understanding of adult learning in the workplace so that their findings will impact upon practice. If the research achieves this it will produce significant outcomes. The project has the potential to generate outcomes in relation to social theory, professional and practise education, leadership and emotions at work. It also promises pedagogical tools which could have wide application. The proposal has a very thorough rationale and theoretical outline which demonstrates an in-depth understanding and knowledge of this research area. Their theoretical approach on professional learning is described by the applicant as being 'subject-centred socio-cultural approach'. The proposal draws on and extends previous research undertaken by the applicant. 6

Feasibility of research plan The research plan is clear and well articulated. There are realistic and appropriately presented objectives. There is a well thought through approach to data analysis and data generation, including excellent use of existing data. The research process is organised into three clear phases - moving from working with existing data, to generating new data and online tools. The proposal show an excellent and measured understanding of the research process. The management of the data and schedule of work are both addressed in the proposal, and seem appropriate. However, a little more detail could have been given on the ways in which the research team will manage the division of labour across the different phases of the research. The objectives and hypotheses are well contextualised within the literature and theory of this field while also looking at new aspects on the role of emotions in agentic workplace learning. The research plan is realistic yet also ambitious. The research process is divided into three distinct phases to help organise the research plan. A multi-method approach which is mostly qualitative will be employed using self-reports, observational data and the recording of emotional incidents after the event. The research methods are appropriate for the objectives of this research. The project will have an excellent and supportive research environment. 5

Budgeting in 2015 Call Full cost model coefficients (once again) The percentage for indirect employee costs is 55% The overheads percentage is 94 % The coefficient for effective working hours applied by your organisation is 85 % Insert those figures to the budget sheet of the Online service of the Academy of Finland. Online service will calculate the final indirect employeee costs and overheads according to percentages given for these. Other costs should inlclude VAT (tick the box) Academy s contribution to funding is normally 70 % of the estimated total costs Budget + budget table is part of your research plan Contact the project secretary of your faculty. 57

Some exceptions to the full cost model Full cost model is not applied in following calls: The personnel salary costs of Academy professors and Academy fellows Personal mobility grants 58

Eligible costs Academy funding can be used to cover both direct and indirect research costs of the research team arising from, for example, the following: working hours (salary) research costs travel national and international collaboration and mobility work and researcher training abroad preparation of international projects publishing (e.g. open access publishing using the golden route). 59
