3 Page 3 Summary of Funding Resources: The following is intended to serve as a brief summary of a number of the funding resources available for use in historic preservation and architectural sustainability. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather a concise listing of those that are easily found and researchable. Enhanced Geothermal Systems - Demonstrations is a funding opportunity wherein projects must demonstrate and validate geothermal sustained flow and heat extraction for a particular duration of time. The EPA P 3 program instituted and funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in order to foment inventive and innovative solutions to the myriad problems we face. P 3 is an award competition that rewards the best and brightest students with $10,000 grants. George and Dolores Eccles Foundation - Education Grant is grant that provides funding through grants to "visionaries", gifted students, and researchers an opportunity to develop their ideas. The foundation began in 1982 and since that time has provided over $300 million in grants ranging a from modest $1,000 to multi-million dollar investments in universities and health-care organizations. Golden Field Office - Recovery Act: High Penetration Solar Deployment is a program run by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and works to strengthen the United States' energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality in public-private partnerships. The purpose of this program is to improve knowledge and to promote acceleration of market adoption of renewable energy (RE) technologies. The Kresge Foundation is an private institution established in 1924 by Sebastian Kresge (founder of Kmart) and provides funding for nonprofit organization within the United States, Canda, the Uniited Kingdom, South Africa, and Mexico. They are dedicated to strengthen these nonprofits in six fields: Health, Environment, Arts and Culture, Community Development, Education, and Human Services. National Energy Technology Laboratory - Combined Heat and Power Systems Technology Development Demonstration is a grant whose focus is in energy efficiency found in combined heat and power systems. The funding is based on meeting or researching several options of heat and power systems. These options include: Large CHP systems, Medium CHP systems, or Small CHP systems. Organizations awarded this grant would have to demonstrate technological advances this system provides. Rocky Mountain Power - Solar Incentive Program is one that provides a monetary incentive to purchase PV panels and produce your own electricity. The program is intended to abate the peak loads on the local electrical grid by paying participating consumers $2 per watt generated.
4 Page 4 Rocky Mountain Power Energy - FinAnswer is a program that provides cash incentives commercial and industrial customers to improve the energy efficiency of their existing facilities. Rocky Mountain Power has an efficiency consultation board that reviews facility plans and attempts to identify possible efficiency opportunities. Then they will provide an analysis report with specific recommendations as to how much such recommendations will cost and how much savings may be had. Rocky Mountain Power - FinAnswer Express is a program operated by Rocky Mountain Power that includes incentives and technical assistance for lighting, motors, and HVAC equipment upgrades that increase energy efficiency for commercial and industrial facilities. This program includes retrofits of existing and new construction projects. The program requires that customers purchase and install qualifying equipment at an eligible location, then obtain an incentive application from R.M. P or authorized dealer. State Facility Energy Efficiency Fund was established in 2008 as a revolving loan program to fund efficiency improvements in state facilities. The State Building Board manages the program and reviews the applications. The fund holds $2.15 million and will earn back the entire amount plus interest. U.S. Department of Energy - Loan Guarantee Program is a program that "paves the way for federal support of clean energy projects that use innovative technologies, and spurs further investment in these advanced technologies. Under Title XVII of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Secretary of Energy is authorized to make loan guarantees to qualified projects in the belief that accelerated commercial use of these new or improved technologies will help to sustain economic growth, yield environmental benefits, and produce a more stable and secure energy supply." U.S. Department of Energy - Solar America Showcase General Projects is a program that help facilitate large-scale installations that involve cutting-edge solar technologies, novel applications of solar, high visibility sites, and/or high likelihood replicability. Solar America Showcase is a Notice of Opportunity for Technical Assistance (NOTA) for proposed installations more than250 kw and does not include direct federal funding for any recipient. Instead, showcase projects include technical assistance through teams of DOE-funded solar experts from national laboratories. In summary, the aforementioned funding resources are but a few of the many possibilities that exist in provisional funding for research and development of sustainable technologies. The importance of doing such research is self-evident and is intended to make for a healthier built environment through sustainably conscious practices. These sources are meant to serve as a guideline for those who are researching such funding options for their own research or that of others.
