1 Student Leadership Education and Development (SLED) Grants Cultivating Leaders. Influencing Change. INTRODUCTION Student Leadership Education and Development (SLED) Grants are designed to catalyze opportunities for Art Center students that directly shape their leadership development. The Fund is intended to support co-curricular activities that clearly complement a student s learning at Art Center by developing a student s leadership competencies as well as amplifying their exposure and engagement to a variety of topics and issues important to college-wide educational outcomes. These topics include but are not limited to, entrepreneurialism, sustainability, community engagement and leadership, diversity, and social impact. The fund is focused specifically on enabling students to participate in and/or organize on and off-campus activities such as educational conferences, workshops, service learning projects for the community, as well as other initiatives that demonstrate the potential for learning leadership skills. The SLED fund encompasses all three pillars of Art Center s strategic plan, and represents one more avenue that demonstrates the college s commitment to advance an intellectually and socially diverse community of learners and creative leaders. CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY A multi-departmental committee convened by the Center for the Student Experience reviews applications three times a year. Applications are due Friday of Week 9 in the Center for the Student Experience by 12 Noon. No late applications will be accepted. Please consult with the CSE Office, read the CSE Dot Life newsletter and/or the Inside Art Center calendar posted at for updated information. Students from all undergraduate and graduate disciplines with active enrollment status are eligible to apply. Students who have filed for an official Leave of Absence are also eligible for a SLED grant. Applicants, either individually or as representatives of a club or organization, must be current Art Center students and in good academic and disciplinary standing. Club and organizations must be currently chartered with the CSE Office. Funding is provided only for co-curricular opportunities (on & off campus). Students who receive a SLED grant are eligible to reapply with a new application in a subsequent term provided they fulfilled all requirements for the first award. Priority will be given to students who have not received a previous grant. PROJECTS, PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES NOT ELIGIBLE FOR SLED FUNDING Sponsored Projects or other curricular courses for credit Fundraisers Independent research, field research, or senior projects Religious or political events Programs/events which have already occurred therefore, no retroactive applications. Other events or activities deemed outside of the grant s purpose and scope
2 GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS A committee of students, staff and faculty appointed by the Dean of Students will review applications and make funding decisions. Recipients will be notified by and/or phone within two weeks of the deadline. The committee recommends that applications be submitted for projects/events that will occur during the upcoming break and/or semester although considerations will be given for applications submitted within the same term. Applications from multiple individuals involved in the same Club & Organization or Project will be reviewed as a group request. Post event: An evaluation must be completed within two weeks after attending the program/event. To complete the evaluation, please go to: Post event: Additional supporting documents must be submitted within two weeks of attending the program/event. These documents include: Visuals/Photographs at the event and written documentation of 1 2 pages typed describing your experience and whether your expected/desired outcomes were met. Post event: Each recipient must provide a blog entry for the Art Center Dotted Line, Student Affairs Department or Design Matters blog. The college will cross post blog entries accordingly. 5 E) RECOMMENDATION TEMPLATE LETTER A Recommendation Letter for a SLED GRANT applicant should include the following: 1) One letter of support from a faculty member, department chair, and/or staff. Multiple letters are encouraged but not required. 2) The letter of support should indicate how this person knows you, and what their role is at Art Center. Also, why they think you should receive the SLED grant. Sample Recommendation Letter: Dear SLED Committee: I have known Student X since September I was his instructor for Design Strategies in the ID graduate program. X s desire to learn about developing businesses and design strategies for 3 rd world country challenges was made abundantly clear to me as he engaged with his classmates, projects, and the program on a level far greater than most other students. X has an active need to be involved in exactly the kind of activity he is requesting funding for at this time. I have been impressed by his strong work ethic, and his intellectual approach to problems that challenge the solutions of his peers. Thus, I think his bright intelligence will be an asset to the conference and, ultimately, Art Center upon his return to campus. I am certain that X will take full advantage of the opportunities available at the upcoming XYZ conference, and hope your committee will grant his request in full so he can participate in this important event.
