4 Evolution of the Trust Early years: Responding to diverse requests, one-time donations Nearly 1/3 of disbursements focused on immediate relief of human suffering. Size of grants varied from Rs 10,000 to Rs 2.5 million

5 Evolution of the Trust In 1995, a strategic plan was commissioned to define a more focused grant making agenda Significant investments in key sectors. Rural micro-finance, water and land resources development, primary education, endowments, civil society & governance etc. Established presence and credibility as a forward looking philanthropy

6 Evolution of the Trust Review undertaken in 2000 and development of Strategic Plan 2006 The Strategic Plan recommends: The Trust play a catalytic and instrumental role in development by allocating priorities to its thematic areas. Enhancing civil society and governance as additional theme recommended. The Trust consolidate its work in the poverty belt of the country.

7 Guiding Principles extracts from Sir Ratan s will of 1913 The ideas and projects to be aided should be public and general in preference to sectional [and] no institution should be aided of which the accounts are not subject to periodical audits. Further, care [should be] taken that such work is not undertaken from the stereotyped point of view....
