It s a buzzword among thought leaders across the sector and the business world, yet it has proven tough to energize organiza ons to innovate, according to Kris na Jaskyte at UGA s School of Social Work and Ins tute for Nonprofit Organiza ons. Why is it that progress in the nonprofit field toward becoming a sector known for its innova veness is so hard to see? she asks, no ng that meaningful innova on may be radical or incremental, and implemented across many facets of an organiza on. How might innova on transform your nonprofit? READ MORE Social Nobis Works For three decades, GCN member Nobis Works has been involved in social enterprise: we just didn t call it that un l a year ago, says President/CEO Connie Kirk. For the Marie abased nonprofit, it s just been how they meet their mission of helping over 22,000 people with disabili es find and keep meaningful jobs, while at the same me, maintain a sustainable revenue model to fuel that mission. Their Recycletronics electronics recycling business, launched in 2009, annually raises $4 million and keeps 12 million pounds out of landfills. The Event Trap: Is your organization in it? Events meet a basic organiza onal need to do something tangible and put a simple form of capitalism to work for your nonprofit, asserts consultant and board member Bill Hoffman. But have yours become the default fundraising ac vity, draining me and resources, while falling short of delivering a commensurate return? It s me to get out of the trap. Start your event planning with a though ul, honest assessment of poten al value, and make it about more than just fundraising.
