Those of us in the traffic enforcement realm of Police work are an even tighter knit family, and the LEL's are most certainly a part of us!!! 2 The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge Awards Ceremony Florida Law Enforcement Challenge There is still plenty of time to maximize your efforts in enforcement, officer recognition, and training in Every point counts in this year s Florida Law Enforcement Challenge (FLEC), so take this opportunity to pick your LEL s brain about where your agency can improve its chances in placing in this challenge. During last year s FLEC, less than 1 point separated winners within the size categories. The top three agencies in each size category will receive traffic safety related enforcement equipment and the first place will have a chance to turn the key for a fully equipped 2016 police vehicle. What is the FLEC? A traffic safety program designed to recognize an agency s effectiveness of efforts in traffic safety. The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge (FLEC) encourages a multi faceted approach for safer communities as it relates to traffic safety, effectiveness of efforts, policies regarding traffic safety initiatives, education of personnel, LEL Program participation, recognition, and enforcement. The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge recognizes the best overall traffic safety initiatives promoting safer driving in the agency s community Grand Champions The Orange County Sheriff s Office
Florida s Motor Unit Officers What is the MUC? A traffic safety program designed to recognize an agency s effectiveness of efforts in traffic safety using motorcycle units. The Motor Unit Challenge (MUC) encourages a multifaceted approach for safer communities as it relates to traffic safety, effectiveness of efforts, policies regarding traffic safety initiatives, education of personnel, LEL Program participation, recognition, and enforcement Florida Motor Unit Challenge The 2015 Florida Motor Unit Challenge (MUC) is underway, with over 100 law enforcement agencies participating. This year s challenge is shaping up to be one of the largest to date! As the participating agencies continue to pound the pavement creating a safer driving environment, we have seen fewer traffic related fatalities during the month of November; proving that once again, enforcement saves lives. Let s keep the focus going for December! The Florida Motor Unit Challenge recognizes the best motor unit s initiatives promoting safer driving in the agency s community. Florida Motor Unit Challenge Coordinator Law Enforcement Liaison Shaun VanBeber
What is the CIOT? A traffic safety program designed to recognize an agency s effectiveness of efforts in traffic safety. Click It or Ticket Thanksgiving Wave Florida Click It or Ticket Challenge Thanksgiving Wave With the New Year just weeks away, the 2016 Click It or Ticket Challenge is in progress. Over 220 law enforcement agencies participated in the first enforcement wave over the Thanksgiving holiday when Florida experiences some of the highest travel volume on its roadways. Agencies from across the state conducted safety belt checkpoints, enforcement details, educational campaigns, and public awareness initiatives. The goal to reduce traffic related injuries and deaths along with increasing safety belt compliance across the state. The Click It or Ticket Challenge (CIOT) encourages a multi faceted approach for safer communities as it relates to traffic safety, effectiveness of efforts, policies regarding traffic safety initiatives, education of personnel, LEL Program participation, recognition, and enforcement. The Florida CIOT Challenge recognizes the best overall traffic safety initiatives promoting safer driving in the agency s community. Click It or Ticket Enforcement Message from the Palm Bay Police Department
Fatality Report There are 407 more traffic fatalities in Florida in 2015, than the same time period in Dates: January 1st through November 30th Super Bowl Sunday Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) partnered with the National Football League (NFL) and the Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) Coalition in order to join forces with local highway safety and law enforcement officials to spread the message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday. For more information visit: Super Bowl 50 NHTSA Ad Campaign
Coordinators Corner All too often, society measures law enforcement on what is reported (negatively) by the media. An officer or deputy going out of their way to help someone is seldom mentioned, if at all. Employers are even a bit remiss in recognizing the outstanding work their employees do. I too, am guilty of this. Don t wait for the New Year, this should not be a resolution. Recognize your employees, co-workers or friends for something good even if your agency does not. Don t let the negative press or the nature of your work undermine the reasons you became a part of the greatest family of all; law enforcement. Over the next few months, the Law Enforcement Liaison (LEL) team, in conjunction with the Institute of Police Technology & Management (IPTM), will revise the strategic plan so we may become more responsive to the evolving needs of traffic safety challenges throughout the state. I welcome your feedback on the quality and level of service provided, and if your needs are being met. A message from the Florida Law Enforcement Liaison Coordinator, Kate Nelson I would like to thank all of the participating agencies for their continued efforts in traffic enforcement and education of the public for the reduction of harm. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the entire Law Enforcement Liaison team for their hard work every year, they truly are wonderful to work with. Have a safe and memorable holiday season!
