1 Duke University School of Nursing Center for Nursing Research and Translational Science 2016 Small Research Grants Program The goal of the Small Research Grants Program is to promote scientific inquiry within DUSON that positions investigators with competitive external grant proposal for success. It is expected that the activities within the Small Research Grants Program will lead to external grant submissions. This year the high priority areas focus on five major categories designed to support: 1. Pilot work to provide preliminary data for grants to be submitted for external funding. 2. Collaborative research between DUSON faculty and DUHS nurses. 3. Collaborative research between DUSON faculty and Winston-Salem State University nursing faculty. 4. External collaboration and interdisciplinary partnership development. 5. Supplemental funding for additional data collection and/or analysis on an existing study. Eligibility Applications must be submitted by full-time DUSON faculty. Submit to Libby Ladd by by January 25, 2016, 5pm. Evaluation Criteria All projects submitted to the Small Research Grants Program will be evaluated for the following: Significance Innovation Investigator and team Approach and methods Plans for future funding and timeline Justification for the need for pilot funding Letter of support and/or signature of approval from Division Chair Review Process All projects will be evaluated using a peer review process following the evaluation criteria as NIH proposals (e.g., significance, innovation, approach, research team, environment). Reviewers will include faculty from the Faculty Research Working Group and outside reviewers if expertise in an area is missing. Time Line Application Due Date: January 25, 2016, 5pm Funding Period: March 1, February 28, 2017 Progress Reports A six-month progress report is due August 31, 2016 and a final progress report is due in March A one-year extension may be requested if the final progress report demonstrates progress toward completion. Faculty who have not completed their pilot project within a 2-year time frame will not be eligible for the small grants program in the future. We expect the Research Pilot Project funding to lead to submission of a proposal for external funding within a year of completion of the study. 1

2 Research Pilot Project This mechanism is to provide funding to gain initial information that will be used to develop proposals for external funding. The pilot proposal must clearly describe exactly what data they need and how it will support the specific aims of the planned grant that will be submitted for external funding. Funding may be requested up to a limit of $25,000. Examples Include: - Obtaining feasibility data of a planned intervention - Describing experiences through qualitative methods that support the significance of the problem - Examining a biomarker to establish the SOP - Use of funds to examine pre-existing dataset(s) and analyses - Obtain data to address concerns of a prior grant review that can be pragmatically achieved within the limits of funding - International project that will lead to external funding opportunities Preference will be given to projects that reflect the highest potential for success in providing preliminary data for external grant proposals. Recipients of this grant will be expected to submit an external grant within a year after completing the pilot work. 3 Collaborative DUSON Faculty and DUHS Nursing Research Grant Funding for this mechanism is to promote research collaboration between DUSON faculty and nurses involved in research in the DUHS. Applicants will submit as multiple principal investigators representing both DUSON faculty and DUHS nursing. The research grant should reflect an important clinical question that promotes scientific inquiry. Funding may be requested up to a limit of $10,000. Examples Include: - Evaluating sleep patterns during hospitalization for cancer treatment in adolescents with cancer - Implementing an early ambulation intervention following surgery - Increasing efficacy of health care delivery - Improving recruitment of patients into clinical trials/research studies - Transitions from acute care for cardiac patients Primary Applicant (Dual investigators from DUSON and DUHS) Specific aims Background/Significance Innovation Approach (include design, procedures, sample, recruitment, methods/measures, and analysis plan) external grant proposal. o Letter of support and/or signature of approval from Division Chair and DUHS Administration o If any of the listed grants appear to have overlap with the proposed pilot project, carefully describe how the proposed study represents a new direction in your research program (overlap statement not to exceed 500 words). 4 Collaborative DUSON Faculty and Winston-Salem State University Nursing Faculty Research Grant Building upon the collaborative work of the Bridge to the Doctorate Grant, Duke University School of Nursing and the Winston Salem State University (WSSU), Division of Nursing will provide $20,000-- $10,000 from each institution, for a new research grant between Duke and WSSU faculty. The inter-institutional research grant is intended to stimulate long lasting research collaborations between the two institutions that will lead to R-level grant submissions. 5 External Collaboration/Planning Grant Funding for this mechanism is for the development of interdisciplinary partnerships for research proposal development and grant planning. These partnerships will leverage the interdisciplinary expertise and thus address important and innovative research questions. It may also be used to support collaborations that allow for the development of specific infrastructure, technologies or procedures that will be necessary for larger grant applications. Awards of $5,000 to $8,000 will be provided to support successful proposals. Funds can be used to cover meeting and travel costs for external collaborators. Proposals must be submitted by teams that represent Duke University School of Nursing and external collaborators (may be at Duke or external to Duke). Examples include: - Bringing together engineers or computer scientists and DUSON investigators to plan for grant submission using a specific technology to reach patients and/or providers for intervention. - Building an industry/duson investigative team for an SBIR or relevant grant submission. - Bringing together DUSON investigator(s) and external consultants or multi-site investigators to plan for grant submission to conduct larger trial of intervention with preliminary supportive data. Preference will be given to proposals that include a specific plan to sustain collaborations beyond the initial partnership supported by this grant and preferably prepare collaborative grant applications to federal agencies or other funding sources within the next 1-2 years. 6 Supplemental Funding Grant Funding for this mechanism is to support DUSON faculty research efforts that will add a scientifically relevant and impactful aim to a currently funded study OR that will enhance their ongoing research by providing additional data collection or analysis to inform next steps. The brief application will include a clearly detailed plan for the research to be conducted and the additional contribution it will make to either the currently funded study or leading in to a new grant submission. Funding may be requested up to a limit of $10,000. Examples include: - Additional aim for extending analysis to include control data from EHR. - Additional aim to add new type of analysis to data analysis plan (i.e., trajectory analysis, case based analysis, visualization) that will extend the scientific contribution of the study. - Additional data collection point or type (i.e., focus group, etc.) that will enhance the study findings and contribution to the science. These supplemental grants are NOT intended to provide additional equipment, effort or resources to existing study aims or ongoing research. New or enhanced aims/analysis must be specifically delineated.
