The core values that drive Lyric's operations involve developing live musical theatre as an American art form, sustaining professionalism in every aspect of operations, and providing professional quality entertainment at an affordable price. Background Since that first summer in 1963 when the curtain went up on Lyric s inaugural production, OKLAHOMA!, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma has been telling the stories of farmers and cowmen, Broadway hopefuls, red-headed orphans and many other classic and contemporary characters. Founded by 12 prominent Oklahomans who wanted to bring professional musical theatre to Oklahoma City, their mission was to eventually attract a broader audience from counties throughout the state. Since that time, Lyric has not only reached patrons from more than 55 counties and several neighboring states, but also expanded its programming with the restoration of the Plaza Theatre, the extension of the regular season to include nine productions, the opening of the Thelma Gaylord Academy and the development of a statewide arts outreach program. With accessibility and inclusion at the forefront of programming decisions, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH will also include a sensory-friendly performance designed for children with autism and/or other sensory-processing disorders and special needs. Musical Performances Adults Strategy Population Served Program Short-term Success Program Long-term Success Families General/Unspecified K-12 (5-19 years) Until 2001, Lyric was primarily a summer stock theatre company housed at a university, producing long-running, large-scale musicals with mostly local talent. Over the past decade, Lyric saw unprecedented growth, transitioning into a year-round theatre company, successfully completing a $10 million capital campaign and raising the artistic quality to the level of other top regional theatre companies. The most objective manner in which the success or failure of a season is measured is by ticket sales. However, though ticket sales are a clear measurement of financial success, they don t always clearly measure artistic success. When evaluating our seasons, Lyric also heavily weighs the feedback we receive from show patrons and the media. And to keepup with our tech-savvy patrons, Lyric takes advantage of Internet and social media opportunities, both as excellent venues for self-promotion, but also as important tools for gauging audience reactions to Lyric shows and other activities. Recently, Lyric has also implemented an intrinsic impact survey that helps us gauge the intellectual, emotional, social and aesthetic effects of each production on our patrons. 4 Lyric's Thelma Gaylord Academy Description Category Lyric s arts education branch, the Thelma Gaylord Academy, was established in 2001 to nurture young artistic talent and is committed to providing a safe, fun and educational environment focused on cultivating the young musical theatre performers of tomorrow, as well as creating a love for theatre in all students that will last their entire lives. The Academy offers professional training in all areas of musical theatre performance for students ages 4-18, including dance, acting and music classes as well as private voice lessons. The Academy also offers production classes that culminate in a full production at the end of each semester, complete with sets, costumes, props and a live band. The Academy has become a significant training ground for the youth of Oklahoma City, even for students not pursuing a post high school arts education. While some of our students have seen success on Broadway and in national tours, all of our students leave with more self-confidence and a strong sense that through hard work and perseverance they can find success. In an effort to eliminate financial barriers that would otherwise prohibit some students from participating in Academy programs, Lyric has established endowment funds and partnered with local organizations to provide scholarship opportunities for those students. 5 Musical Interactive Description Lyric s arts outreach program, Musical Interactive, is a touring musical production featuring an original script with select songs and scenes from an established Broadway musical. A traveling troupe of professional performers entertains and educates groups of students about the history of the musical and its creators along with information about historical events and figures of that time. They interact with the students by singing selections from the musical, teaching them a dance step, involving them in the storyline, conducting a sing-along and much more. A take-home study guide is also distributed to teachers and students. It includes a more indepth history of the musical along with puzzles, activities and class discussion topics. The program is free of charge to interested Oklahoma schools and is open to all grades, reaching over 35,000 students across the state each year. Budget $89, Category Theater Arts Instruction Children Only (5-14 years) Strategy Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years) K-12 (5-19 years) Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Program Short-term Success To ensure the program is on track, it is evaluated at several points throughout the year, which include assessing the artistic and educational value of the existing program and any new program in development, conducting site visits at various schools to observe student reactions, and the comparison of school statistics to determine how well the program is reaching underserved populations and new communities. Success is determined by the combination of these subjective and objective evaluation criteria that help us determine whether or not the program is accomplishing its goals. Statistical data provides us with a measurable method with which to evaluate the program, but nothing can compare to the joy it brings watching students participate in the program. Their excitement for the production and enthusiasm to participate are delightfully fun to watch, but the smiles on their faces as they leave the room are priceless. To correct this, Lyric made fiscal year 2010 a two month year with a separate 990. Beginning on January 1, 2011, Lyric's fiscal year coincides with the calendar year.
