2 The Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality, International Conferences Preservation, Presentation, Promotion and Profit Following the success of the conferences in Istanbul and Amsterdam, the University of Turku (Finland) and Elgin & Co. (Netherlands) are pleased to announce the Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality, International Conference The Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality conferences focus on the leading question How can tourism destinations succeed in attracting tourists while simultaneously engaging all stakeholders in contributing to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage? The conferences offer a unique forum for academics, practitioners and students to share knowledge and experience. The conference agenda is designed to be practitioner-friendly while offering room for critical reflection on heritage and tourism practices and institutions. The conference is of great value to those working for destination management and marketing organisations (DMOs), ministries of tourism, city governments, economic development agencies, designers and technology providers, researchers and practitioners in the field of tourism, hospitality, heritage studies, marketing, archaeology, architecture, geography and related fields. HTHIC2017 Narratives for a World in Transition Also this third Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality conference invites participants to explore aspects of preservation, (re-)presentation, promotion and profit (value-creation) relevant to the leading question. In particular we welcome contributions advancing our understanding of the role of storytelling and narrative techniques. Storytelling is a multi-layered and multipurpose phenomenon. Geographical destinations (places, regions and routes) and tourism dynamics need people to tell and share stories to co-create heritage values, embed these in a sustainable spectrum of tourist facilities, and induce valuable tourist experience. Storytelling can play a role as a branding, marketing, stakeholder and visitor engagement, sustainable management and innovation strategy and tool. Knowledge of critical success factors and skills in narrative management are necessary for storytelling to contribute to the development and promotion of innovative heritage-based tourism value propositions and products. Can (should?) heritage-based destinations use a systematic framework to project their image holistically within an identified coordinated story that ties the individual narratives of stakeholders together in a common destination brand identity? Are alternative concepts and practices available? In addition, in this world in transition, characterised by globalisation, continuous growth in tourism, migration and mobility based on migrant citizenship, there is the need for researchers and practitioners alike to explore the possibilities of reframing tourism beyond the tourist gaze and study the interaction, dialogues and conflicts that arise between visitors, hosts and cultural institutions in the representation and re-use of the past for Page 2
3 touristic purposes. Can a narrative research approach function as a joint nominator for multidisciplinary research? 2017 has been designated by the United Nations 70th General Assembly as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. HTHIC2017 will stress the close connections between the covered topics, sustainability in its many aspects, and development is also the year Finland celebrates the 100th anniversary of its independence. The conference location is Pori, a city offering rich narratives on industrial and coastal heritage and inspiring best practices. Other Conference Themes and Topics The conference organisers welcome full papers, research notes and presentations that contribute to the understanding of: Heritage, tourism and destinations: identity, branding and marketing and elaborate on, for example, the role of heritage in the branding of places; comparative narratives and styles and best practices as to integrative narratives of heritage across nations (supra-national scale); the significance of (multi- and cross-media) storytelling for effective marketing and reputation management; the role and potential of digital technologies and social media. Heritage, hospitality and sustainable tourism development and critically examine, for example, sustainable heritage tourism governance, policymaking and management; the use of (shared) narratives for visitor experience development and stakeholder engagement; entrepreneurship and innovative perspectives on heritage tourism development. Preserving, (re)presenting and communicating heritage and address aspects such as international cooperation of heritage tourism preservation; the role and nature of the social web and information and communication technologies within the context of (sustainable) heritage tourism (including mobile apps, augmented and virtual reality); the use of (digital) storytelling, oral history and crowdsourcing. Governance, partnerships and communities of practice and explore private and public partnerships and networks for conversion and revitalisation of heritage (physical, cultural, memory etc.); new modelling approaches for the governance of heritage-hospitality projects and events and the management of tensions between heritage values and hospitality values; leverage creativity through the arts, media and heritage communities of practice; globalisation and the use of heritage and citizenship in the formation of local identity. History and heritage of tourism and analyse, for example, ways we invent the past and use history and fiction in the context of cultural heritage and tourism; use of oral, public, authorized and other histories in the framing of heritage; the emergence and disappearance of historical values of things and places; past policies and practices that impacted urban heritage tourism and improved (or not) residents quality of life to learn from a historic perspective.
