2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of The American Civil War Museum is to be the preeminent center for the exploration of the American Civil War and its legacies from multiple perspectives: Union and Confederate, enslaved and free African Americans, soldiers and civilians. Background The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar was founded in 2000 (formerly the Tredegar National Civil War Center Foundation) by a group of interested citizens, scholars and friends that wanted a more complete interpretation of the American Civil War than had been offered at other sites around the country. This effort was lead by H. Alexander Wise who previously served as the director of the Department of Historic Resources for the State of Virginia. Mr. Wise became the founding director and visionary for the Center. In its initial campaign, the Center raised $13.6 million in capital funding for the adaptive reuse of the historic Tredegar Gun Foundry, itself an extraordinary Civil War artifact built in 1861, and the fabrication of a teaching exhibit called In the Cause of Liberty inside that building. The exhibit interprets the story of the Civil War from three perspectives--union, Confederate and African American--fulfilling the Center's mission. The first of its kind when it opened in 2006, the exhibit remains a compelling work that has received acclaim as a breakthrough in Civil War interpretation nationally by many esteemed academics and publications. Since its opening in the Fall of 2006, the Center has continued to defy conventional wisdom with its increased visitation. From a modest start its first year of 18,000 visitors, today the Center has over 30,000 paid admissions and well over 100,000 guests that participate in free public programs offered by the Center or in partnership with others. As the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War is underway, the Center will continue to be at the forefront of conversation about the war and its meaning to contemporary audiences. Impact In 2012 the Center successfully met its capital campaign goal of $8.0 million to support planned improvements to the historic Tredegar Ironworks property. Our goal for 2013 is to raise an additional $2.0 million to support additional capital improvements. In 2013 the center will begin construction on a new building designed to serve as a multi-purpose venue for educational programs, rotating exhibits, immersive theater and special events. The Center launched a very successful education program that showcases a live cannon firing each Saturday during the spring and summer months. In 2013 we will launch a year-round living history program that will feature three signature characters from the height of the American Civil War. In 2012, the Center hired a part-time site rental coordinator who has successfully tripled site rental revenue in less than 12 months. Large-scale events included DominionRiverrock (50,000+ in attendance) and the Richmond Folk Festival (100,000+ in attendance). For 2013, we aspire to host more than 40 large and small outdoor events, including weddings and corporate functions. In 2013, we will create a site rental business plan that will assist with revenue and expense forecasting in preparation for the completion of our new building and interior site rental space that will become available. The Center s young professional group, Tredegar Society, held two very successful fundraising events in 2012 that drew in more than 1,000 young people between the ages of to the property. Collectively these events raised close to $15,000 to benefit Center operations. Tredegar Society s leadership team includes 23 young professionals of all backgrounds. In 2013, the Tredegar Society aspires to raise $20,000 to support center operations and increase the number of corporate sponsorships involved. The center will assess its annual fund program and membership program and determine next steps to improve growth. 2

3 Needs 1. Complete $10 million capital campaign. As of January 2013, including in-kind gifts, the Center has raised $8.35 million. 2. Continue to raise unrestricted annual funds to support general operations. The goal for the 2013 calendar year is $375, Redesign and launch the organization s website. The Center also seeks funds needed to add wireless capability to the property, upgrade the server and replace aging computers. Estimated Cost: $100, Replace failing exterior lighting elements throughout the property. Estimated cost is $125, Unrestricted funds are needed to preserve the historic buildings on the property. Estimated cost: $100,000. CEO/Executive Director Statement Your continued support of the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar has enabled us to serve over 107,000 visitors and make substantial upgrades in facilities and programs. We continue to be careful stewards of this remarkable National Historic Landmark as more improvements are made in all phases of our operation. Through our five-year plan, we are committed to continually enhancing the site and expanding learning opportunities about the war that still shapes our nation and the people who lived and died during those tumultuous times. We will continue to enhance exhibits and develop new programs related to the Tredegar Ironworks Co., one of the nation s largest industrial powerhouses in the 19 th century. 3

4 Board Chair Statement I became involved with the American Civil War Center ten years ago, when it was still a compelling idea championed by a few visionary people. It seemed to me one of the most interesting public history projects in the country with the potential to greatly enhance our understanding of the Civil War and its impacts, good and bad, on this nation. It has been heartening for me, therefore, to see that almost immediately after our opening in 2006 as the only museum in the nation looking at the Civil War from the perspective of all its major stakeholders, our holistic approach has been embraced by organizations far more venerable than ours, and has become the governing approach of Virginia's Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission. The Center itself resides on a historic site, the Tredegar Iron Works, which can truly be said to be at the epicenter of the Civil War. Manufacturer of armaments for the federal government prior to secession, Tredegar quickly became the principal source of munitions for the Confederacy. Slaves and free blacks, immigrants, and white men, women and children all worked at the factories of Tredegar. Their stories connect them directly with industrial Richmond, and with every battlefield of the Civil War. We have an exciting opportunity to bring history to life in a compelling way, and to help today's visitors to grasp the enormity of the tragedy of the Civil War and why it matters today. As a young institution in a time of major recession, however, we are dealing with a number of challenges. We are committed to being good stewards of the historic Tredegar site, which is filled with industrial artifacts in desperate need of preservation--and in need of interpretation for visitors. We've been designated by the Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau the Gateway to the Civil War for the Sesquicentennial, and our long term vision is to function nationally in that capacity well beyond the Sesquicentennial, both on site for visitors to Tredegar and online for those who cannot come to us in person. We know that we need to expand our capacity to orient visitors to the importance of historic Tredegar, which we seek to do with a film, that will in turn require a small theater. We need more exhibit space. All of these important projects require funding. To date, we have not always been able to focus our attention on future programmatic innovation because we must work to solidify our financial footing. To deal with these challenges and opportunities, we have been blessed with impressive and dedicated board members willing to roll up their sleeves. Further, with the leadership of Christy Coleman, we have a high level of professional museum expertise on which to draw. We have also been fortunate in our partners, including especially the National Park Service and the institutions aligned in The Future of Richmond's Past. We have just completed a taut strategic plan that will guide us through the next five years, and have embarked on a major gifts fundraising effort aimed at securing funding for our Gateway project, for the film and theater, and to increase our sustainability as an institution. All in all, we see a bright future for our organization, and we know it will make a major contribution to Richmond's rich historical legacy.
