Doran, CRM (443) Chad.Doran@jhuapl.edu THIS MONTH S SPEAKER: Fred Diers Topic: Can s Be Managed? For the past 20 years and its various configurations like instant messages and social media have become the principle method of written corporate and personal communication. It also has been the major target of e-discovery requests. Organizations profess that they have policies, but can they be enforced and do they set standards for content access and preservation? This presentation will examine the validity of how can be managed, indexed by content, with application of retention to that content as well as current software used for journaling and vaulting of s. Also the presentation will explore the personal use of social media such as Linked-In and how organizations can manage content that is posted. The head of GRM s new knowledge-based division, the Solutions Group, Vice President, General Manager Fred V. Diers brings 40 years of global experience in meeting new and existing clients Information Management needs. Fred is the former Director of the Governance, Risk and Compliance Practice for the Judge Consulting Group. In this role, he has worked with Information technology and corporate law functions to develop Governance, Risk and Compliance process solutions for multinational organizations, including Tyco International, Toyota, News Corporation, Pfizer, Alcoa and CSL Biotherapies. As a globally recognized leader in the field of Records and Information Management, Fred has supervised the successful implementation of electronic and paper records management programs for companies operating in over 80 countries. Among his many professional accomplishments, Fred is a Certified Records Manager, a Fellow of ARMA International, an Emmett Leahy Distinguished Achievement Award Winner and a past President of both the International Records Management Counsel and the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA International). 3 Page 3 From the Desk of the President As I see it There was once a time when most records management professionals got into the business by accident. Very few kids would stand up in kindergarten class and say I want to be a records management professional when I grow up. The other kids probably wouldn t have known what records management was, or the bully in the class might just beat you up for saying such a ridiculous thing. In those days, the records management profession chose you, you rarely if ever, chose it. Most of us originated from other areas of business and somehow ended up in records management. The file room was often considered the black hole where files went to die and the file clerk was the undertaker. However, through the hard work and dedication of you and others, the file clerk has evolved into a records professional not only in charge of the management but also the governance of vital records information. The records professional is an important component to the success of businesses and organizations around the word. Because of this, more students are choosing to become records professionals through higher education and certified degree programs. Such options were rarely available as recent as 10 years ago. The ARMA International Educational Foundation has established a scholarship for students interested in records management careers of up to $1, I applaud the AIEF for broadening the scope of records management and giving opportunities to those interested in the field. Please read the press release below for details and spread the word! AIEF Extends Deadline to April 30, 2013 for Undergraduate Tuition Reimbursement Application for the Spring 2013 Semester! Would you or someone you know benefit from receiving $1,000 in tuition reimbursement? Five ARMA International members have already taken advantage of this new AIEF program. Responding to a concern that many records and information management practitioners do not have undergraduate degrees and want to work towards one to advance their career path, the trustees of the ARMA International Educational Foundation have established an Undergraduate Tuition Reimbursement Program. The deadline for applications for the Spring semester has been extended to April 30, Ten awards of up to $1, each will be made for the Spring 2013 semester. This program is in addition to the AIEF Masters/PhD Scholarship Program. For more information and to get the application form, go to and look under Scholarships for the Undergraduate Tuition Reimbursement Program information and application form. And to the bully who beat me up in kindergarten, How do you like me NOW! Kevin T Elmore President, GBMC-ARMA Regional Records Manager, DLA Piper LLP (US) Eastern Region

David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, provides the introduction. See Resources for Volunteer Programs in Archives also provides guidance for archival institutions that plan to revamp or launch brand-new volunteer programs. It includes volunteer management tools such as sample applications, handbooks, emergency contact forms, and job descriptions. With the invaluable help of volunteers, archival institutions are expanding both day-to-day tasks and long-term projects. For example, at National Archives facilities nationwide, nearly 1,600 volunteers contribute to historical projects ranging from processing Confederate Court Records and digitizing Civil War widows pension files, to indexing both bounty land records and Vietnam War Unit Awards. In the past year alone, nearly 300 volunteers contributed more than 42,000 hours at National Archives facilities in the Washington, DC-area including assisting with digitization projects, aiding researchers, and providing tours of the National Archives Experience. The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent Federal agency that preserves and shares with the public records that trace the story of our nation, government, and the American people. The National Archives carries out its mission through a nationwide network of archives, records centers, and Presidential Libraries, and online at To learn about volunteer opportunities at the National Archives, see careers/volunteering. Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America's oldest and largest national archival professional association.
