1 The Indiana Victim Assistance Basic Academy The Indiana Victim Assistance Training Project s mission is to develop and provide a comprehensive, accessible, diverse and affordable training series, available to all professionals who serve victims of crime in Indiana. The Indiana Victim Assistance Basic Academy is an integral part of that mission. The Indiana Victim Assistance Basic Academy is an entry-level training program that provides 40 hours of content through webinar and classroom instruction over the course of three weeks. The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in conjunction with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, oversees the project and the academy. This training opportunity is free of charge, open to employees of government or non-profit entities who provide direct services to victims of crime who have held their role for three years or less. Registration for the June Academy is now open. The in-person, classroom sessions will be held at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. Program Dates: June 3-20, 2019 Topics: The History of Crime Victim Services Victim Rights law Navigating the Criminal Justice System Ethics & Professional Behavior The Impact of Crime on Victims Direct Services to Victims Assisting Victims of Domestic Violence Serving Victims of Sexual Assault Civil Protective Orders Communication with Victims & Survivors Children as Victims Assisting Victims with Disabilities Developing Community Partnerships Victim Compensation, Notification and the Sex Offender Registry Elder Abuse The Impact of Crime on Advocates Cultural & Spiritual Competency in serving Victims of Crime Human Trafficking Building Resilience Another opportunity to attend the Academy will be offered from September 9 to 26, with classroom sessions in Northwest Indiana.
2 Please read the academy description, expectations and requirements carefully before applying. Academy Description The Indiana Victim Assistance Basic Academy begins on Monday, June 3, 2019 and runs through Thursday, June 20, There is no cost to attend the Academy. Students will participate in daily educational sessions on Monday through Thursday of each week. There are no sessions on Fridays. The Academy includes four days of in-person, classroom instruction at Ivy Tech s Indianapolis campus in weeks one and three. The remaining sessions are hosted via webinar. Expectations Classroom Days The in-person classroom days will be held at Ivy Tech Community College, Indianapolis, Lawrence Campus on Wednesday, June 5, Thursday, June 6, Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20, The Lawrence Campus is located at 9301 East 59 th Street, Indianapolis. Webinar Days On days without in-person training, The Academy will hold webinars from 9:00a.m. to 11:00 a.m. EDT. During this time, students should be treated as if they are not physically in the office. On days where the webinars do not take the fully scheduled two hours, students may be given a homework assignment or activity to complete during the remainder of the time. Any homework assignment or activity will be able to be completed during the two-hour webinar window. After 11:00 a.m. students are free to return to work. They will not have any other Academy involvement until the next session. Hotel Accommodations The Training Project will provide hotel rooms, at no cost to the student, for the evenings of Wednesday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 19. Complimentary lodging is available for students who must travel more than 50 miles each direction and indicate the need for a room on their application. Students are expected to fully participate in and complete all sessions. During webinars, students are not to accept phone calls or complete additional work. Should an unforeseen circumstance arise that would prevent attendance, students should notify the program coordinator immediately.
3 Employers and supervisors are expected to support the student s participation in the Academy by ensuring their attendance at all sessions. Employers and supervisors are expected to treat the student as if they are out of the office and unavailable from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on webinar days. Requirements The Academy is open to anyone who is in a position of direct services to victims of crime and has been in that role for three years or less. Attendance and participation in all sessions is required. The Academy will award no partial credit. Anyone who fails to complete the modules in a timely fashion may be asked to leave. Application, Deadlines & Acceptance To apply for the Academy, complete the Student Application and Employer/Supervisor Certification. Both documents must be submitted together to be considered for the Academy. Applications may be submitted by to somalley@icadvinc.org or by fax to You will be notified by that your application has been received. Only a limited number of students may be accepted for the course. If applications exceed the available space, priority will be given to students based on their direct service to victims, years of experience and whether their agency receives VOCA funding. The number of applications submitted by an agency may also be considered.
