1 Overview HENDERSON TRAVELLERS 2018 PROGRAM INFORMATION, TERMS & CONDITIONS AND APPLICATION FORM The aim of this program is to support international travel as a means of developing artistic skills, cultural competence, depth of musical expertise, communication skills, creativity, and an ability to make use of new musical experiences that will enhance students current SCM studies. Application and audition process Each student will undertake an application and video audition process to secure an SCM Henderson Traveller scholarship which will support an approved activity. Students are to submit applications (either for themselves or on behalf of their ensemble) by: Wednesday 28 February 2018, 5.00 pm (Piano Program) Friday 9 March 2018, 5.00 pm (Opera Program) Saturday March , 5.00 pm (Strings Quartet Academy and Open Program) The application form can be found at the end of this document and should be sent to Kate Drain via on kate.drain@sydney.edu.au along with an audition video link by the application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Opera students will also need to apply for their chosen role directly via the organisation s website by the correlating deadline. Audition Requirements & Selection Criteria Each applicant/ensemble will be required to submit a video recording via weblink (YouTube or Vimeo) showcasing a performance to their best ability. String Quartet Academy Program: Up to three string quartets will be selected yearly for specialist training, concert opportunities, tailored mentoring, specialized masterclass opportunities, and travel to an international Chamber Music Academy. String Quartet Academy Audition Requirements: Application for the Henderson Travellers program and associated academic support is by Expression of Interest. Quartets need to record (video) two complete string quartets (including one Haydn Quartet). 2 Opera Roles: Up to eight students enrolled in the Opera program will audition to secure support to collect roles through performance in international young performers programs. Opera Audition Requirements: Students who wish to apply for this program will need to submit a Henderson Traveller application form and video audition (30 min max) as well as applying so directly through the website of the Program they wish to apply for. As these programs are international, early application is advised, and applying for more than one program is recommended. Of course, you should discuss with your teachers what roles may be suitable for you. You should also bear in mind that role preparation for Con Opera productions must also take place, and bear in mind that roles for Semester 2 should be close to off book by the beginning of Semester 2. Pianist Development: Up to eight students will audition to secure support to attend the International Summer Academy at the Mozarteum University Salzburg in mid July Piano students successful in securing a place in the Henderson Travellers program have the option to undertake a tour of the Fazioli Piano Factory based in Venice. The top two (2) students ranked pianist selected for this program will also be eligible to attend the Mendelssohn Academy based in Leipzig in September Pianist Audition Requirements: Students should present own choice repertoire up to a maximum of 15 minutes. Open Program: Up to five small ensembles (up to five players each) will audition for domestic and international masterclass/ performance opportunities. These groups can come from winds, brass, jazz, HIP, contemporary, improvised etc. There is no restriction on the form of the group but only those who show the highest standard will be selected through audition. Open Program Audition Requirements: At least two contrasting works (unedited) with the entire recording being a maximum of 30 minutes.

3 Henderson Travellers Program Terms & Conditions Only currently enrolled students are eligible to apply. Instrumentalists will normally need to be enrolled in Chamber Music to participate. Jazz students should be enrolled in small ensemble. Students are able to apply as part of multiple groups. Each successful student will receive a scholarship to support airfares, event costs, and accommodation up to the value of $6000 each. At the discretion of the judging panel, a lower amount may be awarded. Funding will be released on the provision of an acceptance note from an approved activity. Activities must be undertaken by March Henderson Traveller activities may only be undertaken during University Semester break. Students participating in the Henderson Traveller program will be required to attend Professional Development training, dates are listed in the table below. Ensembles will need to choose an ensemble name. Ensembles should submit one (1) application on behalf of their group (do not submit multiple applications for each group member). If a member of an ensemble is ill and unable to perform at the audition or during the program one (1) currently enrolled student substitute will be accepted for the program. Attendance at any Sydney Conservatorium of Music tour or program is a well-deserved privilege. A special request may be made of you and/or your ensemble to participate in additional performances and appearances in advance of, during or after the program. Students undertaking a Henderson Traveller scholarship may be requested to perform a maximum of two (2) unpaid occasions. Students undertaking Henderson Travellers are requested to capture media of their performances and activities (photos and videos) to be provided to SCM marketing. Students are also welcome to share on their own social media channels utilising the hashtag #usydontour.
