Sam Bauchmann is leading the push for La Mesa Rotary to get high school students from the schools we sponsor (Grossmont, Patrick Henry, Mount Miguel & Monte Vista) to compete in the 4-Way Test Speech competition. He has a packet of information if you know of any students that would be interested. General Guidelines: 1. The purpose is to help youth. Rotarians and the community-at-large to more completely understand, encourage, and foster the principles of Rotary and the objects of Service Above Self. 2. The contest is open to all studentsapproved by the high school. Each school will hold its own contest, sponsored and arranged by the Rotary Club, or, when available, its associated interact club. 6 Global Grants and Other Humanitarian Activities The purpose of this article is to renew the Club s activity in the area of Global Grants. We are currently active in other areas: 1. Over the years our board has funded a number of causes out of general funds, and now does so out of La Mesa Rotary Foundation funds. 2. Charitable Giving Community Grants are requested by individual Club members. They are handled by Duane Palmer and his committee. The maximum grant allowed per La Mesa Rotary member each year is $ Last year we had two very successful District Grants, the Bicycle Project, and the Dictionary Project, which we have done for many years. District Grants are awarded by the District 5340 Rotary Foundation Committee. The maximum available amount of money from the district is $3500, matching club contributions 1:1. It will be up to Steve Looser and his board to decide on next year s projects. I am certain they will welcome your suggestions. Requests will be considered by the DRFC on August 1, Global Grants involve both the District and The Rotary Foundation. The District provides District Designated Funds (DDF) and matches club donations 1:1 up to $10,000 per club. The Rotary foundation matches club cash at 50%, and DDF at 100%. TRF requires a project to be a certain minimum size, and so the net result is that a project requires at least $10,000 in cash donations, and the minimum size of the project is about $35,000. The cash requirement can be provided by a partnership of clubs, and also other sources can sometimes be found. How do we find projects? This is where you come in, and is the reason for this article. There are several ways, and the way am going to promote today is to search and review proposed projects on the District s Global Grant website. There you will find projects that clubs all over the world have posted, looking for the participation of other clubs. Some projects require only money while others need a Sponsor Club to be a partner. We can do either.i suggest you use the Search button in the upper right corner to narrow down your choices, or you can just browse the list. If you find a project that looks interesting, let me know and we can find out more about it. You can be involved in the project at just about any level you like from simply identifying it, to visiting the project site! Submitted by: John Fistere JohnFistere@gmail.org
