ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CRAIG WHEELER School of Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Research Expertise My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems to the mining and minerals processing industries is immense. In a global sense, hundreds of billions of tonnes of bulk materials are transported by belt conveyors each year to transport bulk materials, such as coal, iron ore, bauxite and grain, over distances ranging from several metres to tens of kilometres. Stacker Conveyor Newcastle Coal Loader - Australia. Coal t/hr Overland Conveyors Soma Power Station - Turkey Coal km

Researcher's Insights What steps are involved in a typical project What a successful proposal looks like Establishing and maintaining relationships with industry partners
The Steps Second IC Project Explore other funding opportunities: ARC Linkage METS Ignited Accelerating Commercialisation Initial Meeting Define the problem to be solved Establish the aim of the project Determine necessary capabilities Define partner expectations Establish realistic timelines Progress Report Partner Final Reports Partner Lead Reseacher UoN Finance - Audit Report Reporting Project Definition Aim Activities Deliverables Establish research team Commence project Maintain regular communication with partner Project Execution Research Agreement UoN research contract template includes Project Aim, Activities and Deliverables UoN Grant Establishment Form
A Successful Proposal Satisfies the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) definition of research Clearly defined project aim Well defined project activities Specific and achievable project deliverables Realistic timelines Courtesy: Control Systems Technologies
A Successful Proposal Valued and timely project outcomes New products and/or service offerings Step change technologies Courtesy: Control Systems Technologies
Establishing and maintaining relationships Ensure project deliverables are achievable Maintain communication and reporting Measures of success: Long-term research collaborations Enhanced research capabilities and/or new research fields Patents and commercialisation agreements Courtesy: Jord International
DOCTOR DAVID BRADNEY School of Engineering [Mechanical Engineering] Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering - focused on simulation and measured performance of wind turbines in turbulent environments. Expertise lies in simulation using Finite Element modelling (FEA), computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Mechanical design. PhD evolved extensive experimental work with numerous data accusation systems.
How I got involved with Innovation connections: At the completion of my PhD there was the opportunity to be involved in an Innovation Connection project with Melvelle Equipment Corporation to design a new narrow rail tensor
What I got out of Innovation Connections Completing a PhD doesn t allow for much opportunity to think beyond the PhD Being involved with an Innovation Connections project allowed me time to transition to life after the PhD.
What I got out of Innovation Connections An opportunity to utilise my skills in a challenging and interesting industrial project. Provided an excellent pathway to transition from my PhD. Provided an opportunity to work on the project half the time, allowing me to lecture (in Mechanical Design), and write research papers from my PhD during the remaining time.
What I got out of Innovation Connections I was lecturing in courses in Mechanical Design and Advanced Computer aided engineering both of which tied in well with Innovations Connection project Many of the topics of was teaching, I was also applying in parallel with the Innovations Connections project, which allowed me to provide greater depth to my teaching.
Where am I now I enjoyed re-engaging with industry and am now working for TUNRA Bulk Solids consulting directly with Industry. The skills developed through the Innovation Connections project provided a great stepping stone to my current working environment.
