1 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Last updated 14 February 2018 Arts Infrastructure Grants for New and Emerging Artists Juried Program The program is designed to provide one-time capital acquisition grants to newly-arrived immigrants to Canada or emerging New Brunswick artists to acquire tools and equipment that will strengthen their long-term capacity to create work. When the cost of the proposed equipment or tool exceeds the grant amount requested or awarded, artists must be prepared to provide other sources of funding to fulfill the acquisition. Purchase of equipment or tools must be completed within 12 months of the grant start date. Receipts will have to be provided to showing how the full amount of the grant has been spent. APPLICATION DEADLINE: August 1 If this date falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Your completed application and all support material must be postmarked on or before the deadline date. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: An applicant is eligible to apply for an Arts Infrastructure Grant for New and Emerging Artists when he or she: meets the definition of an emerging professional artist as set out by (i.e. has not been a professional artist for more than 5 years) as well as the criteria for the discipline in which they apply; or is a professional artist who is a recently-arrived immigrant to Canada residing in New Brunswick (became a permanent resident of the province in the last 5 years) and meets the definition of an emerging professional artist as set out by as well as the criteria for the discipline in which they apply; has resided in New Brunswick for at least one year immediately preceding the deadline date and; presents a request which meets the criteria of the program. APPLICANTS MUST: demonstrate a record of artistic achievement and quality of work; present a clear rationale for the proposed acquisitions or capital improvements, including identification of specific costs, tools and materials required; articulate the impact of the proposed acquisitions or improvements on their practice and their ability to create new works. Levels of Funding An artist may receive up to a maximum of $2,500 once in his/her career for the capital acquisition of tools or equipment. DEFINITION OF AN EMERGING PROFESSIONAL ARTIST: Emerging professional artists are those who are at an early stage in their career (no more than 5 years as a professional artist), and who have created a modest independent body of work and have made a locally recognized contribution to their discipline through their work. 2 individual has specialized training in an artistic discipline (not necessarily in academic institutions), and who is recognized as an emerging professional artist by her or his peers (artists working in the same artistic discipline), who is committed to devoting more time to the artistic activity if financially feasible, and who has a history of public presentation in a professional context. The artist practices an art and offers services in exchange for remuneration as a creator, as a performer, or as a director in one or more of the following arts disciplines: theatre, dance, music, visual arts, literary arts, craft, media arts and architecture. RESTRICTIONS: Artists who are not emerging or newly-arrived immigrants to Canada (i.e. who have been professional artists or immigrants to NB for more than 5 years) are not eligible for funding under this program. Students still attending an educational institution on a full-time basis are not eligible. Artists who have an outstanding final report and who have exceeded the prescribed time limit are ineligible for any other grants until this final report is submitted and approved. (see section entitled CONDITIONS OF PARTNERSHIP for details) An artist may only receive one Arts Infrastructure Grant in his/her career. Artists may not submit more than one application per competition within this program. It is the responsibility of the artist to submit all required support material including letters of recommendation by the deadline date. ELIGIBLE EXPENSES: Funds may be used for: One-time acquisition of artistic equipment, technical equipment, software or peripherals necessary to advance the creation of future artistic works. One-time capital improvements to enhance an artist s studio, rehearsal, production or presentation space. INELIGIBLE EXPENSES: Funds may not be used for: Consumable art supplies (e.g. canvasses, clay, paint, etc.) used in association with ongoing artistic practice or for creation of a specific project. Routine rent or overhead expenses for artist s housing, office, studio or retail space. Artistic or administrative salaries, stipends or performance fees. Real estate purchase, including mortgage payments. Personal debt repayments. APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITY: It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that all materials required to complete his or her file are received by, or postmarked, by the deadline of the competition. Applicants must forward to a complete file containing: a program application form duly completed, and all the required support material and samples of work stated under the headings Requirements and Samples of Work. REQUIREMENTS: Please note: All applications must be submitted in loose sheet format printed on one side only to facilitate reproduction. All pieces must be photocopied clearly on 8 ½ x 11 paper Binders, folders, and plastic covering will not be returned. Pieces larger than 8 ½ x 11 will be treated as oversized support material and may not be presented to the jury. AIG_Prog_Desc_E Page 2 of 6

3 All applicants must provide: 1. Application form including a balanced budget for proposed capital acquisition. 2. Résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) (max. 4 pages). Note: Biographies are no longer accepted. 3. A 500-word description of the capital acquisition for which funding is requested. In this description, applicants should describe the specific tools or equipment they are seeking to purchase or the capital improvements they are seeking to make, including costs and a timetable for the acquisition. Applicants should briefly discuss the rationale behind their request in the context of their current or proposed future artistic work. Applicants should clearly articulate how the required equipment will impact their work as an artist, how it will increase their long-term capacity to create work, and why it is significant at this juncture of their professional life. A brief statement of the applicant s artistic practice and the nature of their work should be included copies of all samples of work. Note: Samples should relate to proposed project. 5. If the applicant wants their samples of work returned, they are required to supply a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage, large enough to contain all support material. Works accompanied by envelopes bearing insufficient postage will not be returned. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that materials can be returned without damage. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Artists applying are strongly encouraged to request two letters of recommendation supporting their application. They will not, however, be disqualified if no letters are received. Letters of recommendation should be provided by artists or art professionals in the same discipline who exhibit experience and expertise in said artistic field. Appraisers should be given a copy of the form entitled "Letter of Recommendation" and be asked to return it, duly completed, to within one week following the deadline. Letters of recommendation arriving late will not be included in the material presented to the jury. SAMPLES OF WORK: All applicants are required to submit 4 copies of all their samples of work (and samples of the work of the proposed artist(s) if applicable) with accompanying descriptions or synopses. Do not send original works of art; they will not be presented to the jury. Emerging artists should not present their student work to the jury. The samples of work should be created since leaving school or university. Carefully edit the materials you present. The specified maximums will be enforced strictly. Required samples (with a specified maximum) will be presented to all the members of the jury. Note: Please write your name on each item that you are sending, and bear in mind that the technical quality of the material might influence the recommendation of the jury. Your samples of work will only be returned once your application has been evaluated and if an appropriately self-addressed and stamped envelope is provided with the application. Required samples of work: Whatever the format of the media chosen to submit the samples of work (CD, DVD or USB), 4 copies of the selected media should be submitted: one copy for each member of the jury, and a copy for. A short description of each sample of work must be submitted all the descriptions should be gathered together on one single page (only one copy of the page is required). This can include exhibition work, critical texts, critical reviews, and public presentations. Multidisciplinary Arts Please refer to the specifications for each discipline. GENERAL GUIDELINES ON THE SUBMISSION OF MATERIAL IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT: Important notice: applications with digital support material that does not correspond to the following guidelines will be considered incomplete, and therefore withdrawn from the competition. 5 Do: 1. Submit documents as PDF or Microsoft Windows compatible files only. 2. Submit images and photos as jpg files only. 3. Submit files of a maximum of 1024 pixels on each side. 4. Submit files of 1MB maximum. 5. Title each file (image) with a number, your initials, the year and title of your work. 6. Ensure that the numbers for the first nine images begin with a zero (for example: 01intialsyeartitle.jpg, 02initialsyeartitle.jpg 15initialsyeartitle.jpg). This will ensure that they are presented in the correct order, following your image list. 7. Do not put any special characters, symbols, periods, quotation marks or a space (such as #/- & ) in any file name. 8. Save images directly on the CD or DVD or USB key without creating folders. 9. Mark each CD-ROM or DVD or USB key with your name. For video files: 1. Submit files that can be accessed with one of the following plug-ins: QuickTime, RealPlayer, Shockwave, Windows media Player of Flash. Don t: 1. Don t use stickers on CD s or DVD s. 2. Don t submit slides. 3. Don t submit Mac files that are not fully Microsoft Windows compatible. 4. Don t submit any type of presentation (such as PowerPoint). 5. Don t submit compressed files (WinZip, Stuffit, etc.). 6. Don t include hyperlinks to Internet sites with your images. 7. Don t submit material that requires software, plug-ins, extensions or other executables that need to be downloaded or installed. 8. Don t submit any files by Don t submit any other component of your application electronically on your CD-ROM or DVD. Test your material before submission to ensure that it is formatted correctly. It is your responsibility to ensure that all material reaches s office intact and in a readable format. Important: The presentation of your support material is critical to the evaluation of your application. Do not assume that staff will prepare any element of your presentation for you or retrieve material from previous applications. EVALUATION PROCESS: Applications received are first reviewed by the Program Officer(s) to confirm they are complete. Only those applications which are completed by the prescribed deadline and which meet the eligibility criteria are submitted to the jury. Eligible applications are evaluated through a multidisciplinary jury composed of professional artists chosen from a list of jurors approved by. NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified of the results, by mail, within approximately 3 months following the competition deadline. Results will not be released over the telephone. DISBURSEMENTS: Grants will be disbursed according to the following schedule: 100% upon notification of successful application. CONDITIONS OF PARTNERSHIP: 1. Applicants are responsible to submit an application and all necessary supporting material. The application must be postmarked on or before the deadline specified for the program. Material sent by facsimile will be accepted to open a file, but must be supplanted by original documents within one week following the deadline. 2. Awarded funds cannot be used to pay for capital acquisitions bought before the date that the application was submitted. AIG_Prog_Desc_E Page 5 of 6

6 3. Funds must be used as specified in the approved project. A portion or all of a grant already allocated may be revoked if the expressed or implied intent of the program is not met. If a funded project is cancelled, altered or not completed, the recipient is responsible to reimburse all funds proportionate to the incomplete portion of the project. Such calculations are to be made by, with all relevant figures and information provided by the recipient. 4. Grant recipients must submit their final report within one year of the date on their award letter. Short term extensions may be granted if a formal extension request is completed by the grant recipient and then approved by the Program Officer and Executive Director. Note: Artists who have an outstanding final report and who have exceeded the prescribed time limit are ineligible for any other grants until this final report is submitted and approved. 5. should receive appropriate credit for its support in all publicity or activity associated with the funded project. 6. Grant recipients must notify of any public presentation associated with the funded project so that board members may attend. 7.
