3 Programs Programs Marco Island Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary Description This is a program to:. 1. Secure the current Bald Eagle nesting site and surrounding land from further development by private interests with lease and lease/purchase agreements. 2. Organize and conduct a capital fundraising campaign to buy the site from the Collier County School District under the lease/purchase agreement.. 3. Continue orientations and workshops for citizens, visitors and school children in support of our outreach program. 4. Initiate the improvements allowed under the lease/purchase agreement. These include the installation of a perimeter security fence, 1800 linear feet of visitor walkway, construction of 7 teaching sub-sites and visitor parking. Long-Term Success When fully implemented our program will: 1. Create a permanent nature preserve that stops the incursion of development on the last open space available on Marco Island for the preservation of the Bald Eagles, Gopher Tortoises, plants etc that were originally found in abundance in the region.. 2. Provide readily accessible Preserve for the citizens visitors and school children of the area in which they can view and study the original flora and fauna of pre-developed SW Florida. 3. Create a high profile destination for the island's numerous visitors that demonstrates the level of concern the citizens of the area have in maintaining and preserving the wildlife and plants that are native to the area while also enriching the world class vacation destination that Marco Island and SW Florida have become. 3. Demonstrate for other communities facing similar development pressures that it is possible to create and maintain a viable nature preserve adjacent to densely developed areas. Examples of Long-Term Success Target Population 1 Target Population 2 Although the program is in its infancy and it is too early to demonstrate success, the plan detailed in other portion of this profile clearly point out what we believe the Marco Island Nature Center and Bird Sanctuary can be including its substantial benefits to the Collier County residents' quality of life Children and Youth (0-19 years) Adults 3
4 Impact Goals What are your organization's long-term strategic goals? Our ultimate goal is contained in the Foundation's mission statement: The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation's dual mission is to preserve the last open space on Marco Island by creating a Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary on Marco Island that will preserve the original habitat--the Bald Eagle nests-- along with the remaining original eco-system while making it available to the public and, particularly, school age children of the region. The other mission is to create a showcase for the general public exhibiting the feasibility of locating a sustainable nature preserve and environmental education complex in an area of intense development. Strategies What are the major strategies you will do to accomplish your goals? Our broad strategy is to raise money to buy the site from the County School District, plant native species of trees and other fauna, build pathways and teaching sites around the existing wild life nests and burrows and raise a Nature Center building with interactive exhibits and class room space. This will be followed by an ongoing series of programs to teach school children and visitors the necessity and benefits of preserving the natural environment in which we live. Capabilities What are your organization s capabilities for doing this? The group of concerned citizens that came together as the founders of the Foundation are all successful, retired professionals. This gave the Foundation access to skilled lawyers, architects, and other design professionals as well as the contributions necessary to startup the Foundation and to operate for the initial period of 5 years. The largest demonstration of our ability to proceed is the fact that we have overcome the largest anticipated obstacle we expected to face, namely, securing an exclusive agreement from the current public owner of the property, the Collier County School District, to purchase the land under a five year lease/purchase structure. This was accomplished in the face of strong resistance from competing public and private interests and reflects the substantial support already generated in the local community and government entities. Indicators What indicators do you use to measure progress? Success in capital fund raising will be self evident and measured by the dollars committed or received. Measuring success in achieving the qualitative goals will be more difficult and will not be evident for some time. There will be indicators like number of visitors per year, level of interest in the local schools and the continuing presence of the wildlife and plants we are seeking to preserve. In this endeavor, success while not guaranteed will be obvious when it is achieved. Progress What have and haven t you accomplished so far? What has been accomplished to date is significant: 1. Securing the property from development for the last five years under the original lease agreement. The School District was predisposed to sell the land because it needed to money to develop a Charter School on Marco Island. 2. Negotiating the new five-year lease/purchase agreement for the land with the School District which was signed in October As noted above, his was accomplished in the face of opposition from competing public and private interests. 3. Initiating outreach programs to involve local schools in learning opportunities and visitations to the site. What has not yet been accomplished are the following: 1. Conduct of a successful capital campaign to raise 3.0 million dollars to purchase the land and make the improvements needed to carry out the mission. 2. Buy the land to put it in a 4
5 permanent preservation state. 3. Complete the improvements needed to build and operate the Nature Center. 5
