MARCH 2016 Commander s Message First and foremost, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their comforting sentiments, upon the death of my sister.

A District Meeting is scheduled for April 10 th, in Freeburg; the mouse races will be held on April 23 rd and as a new treat the post will sponsor a Roasted Nut festival leading up to the mouse race.

3 MARCH 2016 Commander s Message First and foremost, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their comforting sentiments, upon the death of my sister. Your kind thoughts are greatly appreciated. The Post has lots of things happening this month. A District Meeting is scheduled for April 10 th, in Freeburg; the mouse races will be held on April 23 rd and as a new treat the post will sponsor a Roasted Nut festival leading up to the mouse race. Please join us for this event. Let s make this a hit and see if we can make it an annual event. The Relay for Life Trivia event will be held at the post. Diane Holst is the contact for this event. We hope you will join her and her group for this event. The Trivia Night will be held on April 26 th. The Nominating Committee has been appointed and is looking for members to pitch in and assist with the running of the post. I know we are all busy, but I hope you will consider a position with the post. Elections are in June. Volunteering Most of us joined the American Legion Post to join with our fellow Veterans and to be a part of something that matters. Part of doing that is to assist with running the post - which could be just assisting in the kitchen every few weeks; driving occasionally; assisting in preparation and planning for a dinner, or program at the post. Whatever talent you have, the post will appreciate the assistance you can provide. Ken Bishop

4 COOKS WANTED - The post is forming cooking teams to prepare meals for the Friday events. Join us for this event. We are getting names together now for these meals. We hope to get enough participants so that your team would only need to run the kitchen every fifth or sixth week. If you are interested please contact Larry Call (the post Adjutant). BINGO WITH THE VETERANS - We are looking for two or three members who would be interested in traveling to the Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia to play Bingo with the veterans. We go on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month. We normally drive to Columbia and stop for a meal (everyone pays for their own) and assist the veterans with bingo from 2 3 PM. Then we head back home. We are usually back between 4:30 or 5:00. We had been leaving around 10, but are planning on leaving at 11:00, as we have an excess amount of time to wait before getting to play. 5 I would like to thank Bev Marion for stepping up and taking over the kitchen for the Turkey shoot this winter when Shirley had to step down. Both Shirley and Bev stepped in and took over the kitchen duties when Saturdays became available. Not only were they able to have their biscuits and gravy but both kept the kitchen going with good humor and will power. Thanks Bev and Shirley! The kitchen contract runs out on 31 March so the kitchen operations will be run by the Legion family rather than the Auxiliary. We will work in teams with everyone helping out. We will have a broader member base to keep the kitchen up and running. A kitchen committee has been formed and has been well attended. All general supplies will be purchased by the Legion Kitchen committee to keep our kitchen well stocked and ready for use by all components. Some of the start up kinks have been ironed out but more are being worked on. April will be our trial period to see what works and what doesn t. We would like to have a list of people who would like to be on the list of workers, dish washers and cooks. Aprils menus and teams have been set up and we are now working on May. I spoke to several would-be chefs and hope to start working on teams. The cook/chef will probably be setting up their own teams. Right now Bev Marion and Barb Gatewood are already forming their teams. Jeanine Clapp will be back 1st of April and will be setting up a team in the very near future. Kathy Thomson will probably be forming a team later this summer. If you want to setup one of your own teams and are interested working in the kitchen please let me know. This new kitchen organization should work as we have a much larger pool of workers to pull from. Come and join in the kitchen fun. A 12 round red plate is missing. It has Give us this day our daily Bread on it. If you find it please return it to the Legion or let Shirley Dull know. No questions asked, but this little bit of memorabilia is dearly missed. thanks. Up Coming Events: The Auxiliary will be having a GARAGE SALE On Saturday, May 14. Our set up and drop off time will be Friday May 13. We could use a lot help with this to set up, price and accept deliveries. Please let Sheila Marlow or myself know if you can help us. We have had a lot of interest to have this event again, so if you have some things you would like to donate keep us in mind. If you donate clothing we would appreciate gently used items. If you have larger items we will have some of our veterans available to help you unload. We are having our first CRAFT FAIR on Saturday, June 4. Susan McTaggert is heading this event. If it is popular we will try to have this every year. If you are interested as a Crafter give Susan McTaggert a call, If you plan on being a buyer bring your husband and kids as we will have the bar open, the kitchen will be serving food and drink and we are looking at having a supervised play ground for the kids. Everyone will have fun. There has been some interest in a Bake Sale during our Memorial Day breakfast. We will discuss this at our next meeting. We will need helpers as well as donations. Our next meeting will be April 5, it s spring and a lot of things are on the calendar. Please plan to attend, bring a friend and find out about future events are coming up. Jane Boyce
