2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement To engage, educate & entertain through accurate living historical interpretation, authentic objects, historic structures, stories & lives from America's past the important role that New England, Massachusetts & Marlborough played in America's past & the events that shaped our country. Interpreting & sharing history in such a way to make it interesting & fun for the benefit of present & future generations. Background Statement Our organization is very small and young in comparison to most nonprofits. However it has a Board of Directors and Executive Director that are very dedicated to carrying out its mission statement. The name "Olde" was chosing because it was organized by people who were born, lived, and worked in Marlborough and remember what it was like before new highways & shopping malls and wanted to try and save any history or historic places that was left. People who also felt it was important to educate people on the important role that Marlborough, the State and New England played in America winning its ideals of liberty & freedom and that we should not forget it. Helped Marlborough Historical Society raise $9, to sustain their 1688 historic Captain Peter Rice Homestead. 3. Produced an event to create awarness to the downtown by bringing thousands of people there. 4. Assisted the Marlborough Downtown Village Association apply for and successfully attain the designation as a "Cultural District" from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Current year's Goals : 1. Obtain funding for Mural Project 2. Have 1st. Mural completed 3. Successfully save a 1928 Gasoline Station (oldest in the city) owned by the city that was taken for back taxes and restore it and turn it into a museum depicting the two industries (shoe & apples) that made Marlborough a city. 4. 3 Programs Mural Project Description Outdoor Mural Project in central business district of Marlborough, Ma. Plan to eventually have 2-3 murals depicting historical events, persons & places from Marlborough & region. Using the power of art & murals, it is our intent to create an "Outdoor Historical Art Museum" that will be open 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a yr and will be "Free". Persons who don't normally attend museums will now have the opportunity to do so & will be educated on history of Marlborough, Mass. & N.Eng. We plan on hiring professional muralists & having museum quality paintings. We also plan on having hidden objects in the murals & people will have to study them to find them. In doing so, especially children will be learning about history & art without realizing it. Budget 1 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other General Arts Presenting General/Unspecified, Children and Youth ( - 19 years), Families Has not started yet to have 2-3 outdoor murals depicting historical events, persons, places that will be an 24/7 outdoor free historical art museum so that people can learn Surveys, interviews ne yet, program has not started yet 3
4 Gasoline Station/Museum Description To save & restore a 1928 Gas Station (oldest in city) located in the downtown, that was taken by the city for back taxes & environmentally cleaned up by the city & EPA grants. We hope to restore the station to how it originally looked and also to make a Museum out of it. It would highlight the 2 industries that played a major role in Marlborough becoming a city, (Shoes & Apples). It would also house the complete contents of a shoe repair shop that operated on Main St. for almost 1yrs. in the 19/2s. It was donated to the city & has been in storage for many years now. It would house artifacts, info.& photos from the Historical Society. It would be manned by docents who will be volunteers from the Hist.Soc & Sr. Citizens.Assoc. It would also distribute info. about Marlborough. Budget 5 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Historic Preservation & Conservation General/Unspecified, Elderly and/or Disabled, Adults Save the Station from being destroyed as so many other historical properties in the city has been. Complete restoration depicting the station what it was in 1928 & successfully creating the musem & recreation of the contents of the shoe repair shop so that people may see what life was like when gasoline cost just pennies & how our forefathers made their living in the many shoe factories & harvesting the apple crop from thousands of acres of orchards. Also to see how shoes were repaired during those times. The success of this program will be measured by the number of visitors that will visit the museum/station. To measure this, we will ask visitors to sign a visitors book & also to give what city, state or country they are from & to leave written comments asbout their visits. This will be handled by our docent on duty. Program has not started yet. 4
5 Taste of Marlborough Description An awareness & fundraiser program that highlights the city's many fine restaurants & the downtown of Marlborough where it is held. Originally started in 28 as the Taste of Downtown Marlborough to create an awarness of the city's downtown & its restaurants. Expanded in 21 to the Taste of Marlborough" to highlight all restaurants in the city and bring people to the downtown. There is also entertainment at 14 different venues & also strolling entertainers within the downtown area during the event and historical displays, ie; then & now photos of the downtown & other areas of the city. June 1,213 will be the 6th. annual Taste. Budget 25 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Cultural Festivals General/Unspecified, Adults, Aging, Elderly, Senior Citizens Increased business at participating restaurants. Awarness of the downtown & the raising of funds. Creation of awarness of the many fine restaurants in the city and also of the other amentities of the city's downtown and raising funds for historical & downtown programs. number of ticket sales. talking with attendees & participating restaurants that express how it helps their business, Every year the attendance has grown from 1, +/- 1st. yr. to 2,5 +/- in 212. Also, two restaurants (Thai & Mexican) that was ready to go out of business started prospering after their particpation in our 1st. year. The mexican restaurant eventually went out of business for perosnal reasons. A new restaurant also prospered from the taste to the extent that it added on to their establishment. The majority of restaurants participate every year because it helps them create new customers. The taste has also created an awarness of the downtown to thousands of people who never visited the downtown. Program Comments CEO Comments The biggest challenge that we faced in carrying out our "Mural Project" was receiving approval from the city to do it. It has taken 5 years to finally receive that approval. w that we have received that, our next biggest challenge comes in finding funding for the project. We expect to address this by applying to various foundations, for state funding through the Ma. Cultural Council and corporate contributions. Another challenge facing us is that of trying to save the oldest gasoline station (1928) in the city and create a museum depicting the shoe & apples industries. We plan to join forces with the Marlborough Historical Society, the Marlborough Downtown Village Assoc. and the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce. to convince the city to do this instead of tearing it down and then to find funding to do the museum. Our biggest challenge facing us will be that of finding funding for our programs. 5
